“City of Bones”, written by Cassandra Clare, is a fantasy and adventure book aimed towards the young adult crowd. The story begins with teenager Clary when she stumbles across a scene that she believes to be a murder. In this incident, Clary meets three other teenagers who label themselves as shadowhunters, “people who kill [demons]” (Clare 44). It is these very teenagers, Alec Lightwood, Izzy Lightwood, and most importantly, Jace Wayland, who help to guide Clary when her mother goes missing several days later and she herself is attacked by a demon. Before she knows it, Clary is pulled into the magic realm filled with everything she had thought was impossible and goes on to learn that “all the stories are true” (Clare 485). More specifically, the character development shown in the protagonist Clary. In the first few chapters, Clary is ignorant to the enchanting world of magic and is shown to be an innocent, pure teenager who does not have any worries in the world. When the shadowhunters first meet her, they view her as weak, stubborn, “little girl” who is inadequate and is not any more special than any other mundane they had ever interacted with (Clare 15). As the story progresses Clary slowly begins to show her true colors and unleash the power and strength that had been trapped inside of her for years. She displays large amounts of improvement physically as she begins to complete actions that had she once thought were impossible, such as murdering a demon by herself. She also shows development mentally when she decides to visit the Silent Brothers even though she is aware that “they can crack open a man’s mind the way you might crack open a walnut-and leave him screaming alone in the dark if that is what they desire” (Clare 159). By the end of the book, Clary was wiser, braver, and much more resilient. All of the lessons that Clary learned throughout the story showed her to keep her eyes open during new experiences instead of cowering away like she had during the majority of her life (485). She was no longer the weak little girl that was blinded from the truth and she could finally see everything that she had not seen before. Clary showed immense amounts of character development and Clare improved the story by writing her characters this
The main character throughout most of the book is “Verity”, or Julie. She is actually telling the story of Maddie, however, although her presence seems to still be main focus throughout the story. Halfway through the book, however, it switched to Maddie’s point of view, or “Kittyhawk”. With both of the girls, you can see the changes in them. They both develop greatly and you can see it through them by just looking at what they are afraid of. It mentions once in the story that Julie once said that she was afraid of growing old, and then she say’s later that she could eat her words: she is now afraid of never growing old. “But mainly so very, very stupid. I desperately want to grow old” (114). With Maddie, you can see her changing just by the way her want to live grows as she is trapped under cover for many months without being able to see home, her best friend, or even just simply someone that she is comfortable around.
There are multiple reasons why a book can be banned or challenged. Book banning causes the removal of materials in schools and libraries due to “inappropriate” content. The Lovely Bones, by Alice Sebold, was banned due to sexual content and language.
At first she was a little confused but then began to be more patient. The Character arc changes throughout the story in very slight ways. At first the narrator sounds playful and childish. However, getting towards the end of the story, the narrator becomes more patient and a little more mature.
so it is understandable what she went through. The problem is then, just like now, that people believe they have to change to be successful. That the only way to have financial success is to act, or in Clare’s case be whiter.
Clare longs to be part of the black community again and throughout the book tries to integrate herself back into it while remaining part of white society. Although her mother is black, Clare has managed to pass as a white woman and gain the privileges that being a person of white skin color attains in her society. However whenever Clare is amongst black people, she has a sense of freedom she does not feel when within the white community. She feels a sense of community with them and feels integrated rather than isolated. When Clare visits Irene she mentions, “For I am lonely, so lonely… cannot help to be with you again, as I have never longed for anything before; you can’t know how in this pale life of mine I am all the time seeing the bright pictures of that other that I o...
Written in 1818, the latter stages of the Gothic literature movement, at face value this novel embodies all the key characteristics of the Gothic genre. It features the supernatural, ghosts and an atmosphere of horror and mystery. However a closer reading of the novel presents a multifaceted tale that explores
Tragic mulatto characters such as Clare transport unforeseen horrors when they make the selfish decision to reinsert themselves back into the world they so desperately desired to flee. Larsen makes this point clear through the diction she uses when describing the self-esteem destruction Irene undergoes once Clare has reinserted herself into Irene's life, and the situations Irene finds herself as a direct result of Clare. Prior to Clare’s reentrance into her life Irene is a self-assured, independent, and confident woman; however, she soon turns self-conscious, dependent, and hesitant. Upon viewing Clare at the hotel Irene is struck by Clare’s ...
The character I choose from the novel Lovely Bones is Mr. Harvey. His role in this novel was that he is a serial Killer. What is a serial killer? A serial killer is someone that killed more than three people over a period more than a month. Mr. Harvey killed Susie the main character in this novel. He rapped her, and cut her body up, and packaged it, and drove 8 miles and dumped it in a sinkhole.. Mr. Harvey doesn't really have a family. His dad abandons his mom after the argument that they next to the car in the streets over truth and consequences in Mexico. His mom was desperate that she taught him how to steal and shoplift. We know that his father was an abusive person. He also taught him about buildings. We know that Mr. Harvey’s life and Susie’s are the not exactly the same. In fact we know its the total opposite. Mr. Harvey never know what love is, since his father was abusive and his mother was a thief. Susie always had a loving family. Her dad and mom loved her and was overly protective.
“Not necessarily. I turn myself down occasionally, just to keep it interesting.” These few lines shows readers Jace’s character and personality. From just a few sentences Clare wrote, one can tell Jace Wayland is a quick witted and egoistic person. Not a single character in Clare’s

The definition of the Horror genre differs completely to the Gothic genre. This idea of how the Gothic novel transformed from various architectures based around impending castles and morality tales, to the idea of monsters, fear, and repugnance. Therefore, it is interesting to notice the change from how the genre has developed from arguably the 17th century to the 20th century, where vampires, werewolf’s, and other monsters are very popular with teen audiences especially.
The novel is the ideal example of a gothic novel because it encompasses all the themes that typify the gothic novel. The main tenets of gothic literature include, terror, violence, threatening of a women’s virtue and women being in constant danger. This can be seen in the case of Antonia He has gained the trust and approval of everyone around him and he takes advantage of that. This contrast in power well-known and highly prevalent in Gothic Literature. “The Gothic world is fascinated by violent differences in power, and its stories are full of constraint, entrapment and forced action” (Bowen).
The Shadow Quest series is a distinctive combination of genres that comes in paperback and ebook format. While they are classified as paranormal romances, they also include aspects of dark fantasy, sci-fi space epic, and action adventure. The novels incorporate all manner of the supernatural ranging from vampires, witches, fairies, dragons, demons and the liberal sprinkling of human characters. The Shadow Quest novels could also fit the classification of adult romance as some of the plotlines feature the love stories of alien characters that are loosely derived from popular lore and mythology. The novels introduce a new character in each novel with mysterious powers that struggle against another supernatural character with different yet equal strength power.
The amount of character growth and development is something that I really appreciate in any form of storytelling, but I especially thought that is was important in this
story lines. I look forward to reading more of her work and researching her character.
