Character Analysis: The Picture Of Dorian Gray

As soon as a baby is born, influence in their life begins. A baby is influenced by whatever the mother does, and how she cares for herself. Quickly, this child becomes more conscious of its surroundings, and the way others behave around it. This child starts to have its own opinions; opinions influenced by society. In The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde portrays Dorian Gray as being as innocent like a newborn; with the morals of a perfect gentleman, who meets Lord Henry Wotton, a not so perfect gentleman who comes along and influences Dorian Gray like a mother would a newborn. Dorian Gray is a tragic hero in the fact that he is so easily influenced Henry Wotton but cycles through to discover he has developed many flaws.
Lord Henry Wotton is a pessimistic witty man. Lord Henry Wotton seems brilliant, but in reality; all this philosophies contradict each other, he “likes peoples better than principles” (11) and he understands the psychology of the human brain. And has become a master in distinguishing the thoughts and words of people. Although Lord Henry isn’t necessarily an evil person, he is a bad influence. When Dorian asked if he was as bad an influence as Basil Hallward claimed, he replies “there is no such thing as a good influence Mr. Gray. All influence is immoral” (19). Regardless of this warning, as Lord Henry Wotton’s witty dialogue blinded Dorian Gray and ultimately caused his demise.

Lord Henry first meets Dorian,not in person, but when Basil Hallward showed him a portrait. Basil fell in love with Dorian and begins painting him, making his creation during this time. Basil knows what Lord Henry is capable of, and from the beginning he’s worried that Lord Henry will alter Dorian’s character. Basil warns Lord Henry n...

...d not exist. Lord Henry Wotton’s meddling influenced Dorian’s morals, and his personality. Although Lord Henry was the reason for Dorian’s life going astray, Dorian made the ultimate choices. In the end allowing himself to succumb to all of Lord Henry’s awful philosophies and changing who he was as a person prompted his tragic downfall. He was a true tragic hero in the fact that in the end he did see that he was wrong. Dorian started as a kind, gentleman who saw very little value in looks or other material things. Soon after becoming close to Lord Henry Wotton his morals all begin to change and he values things he never used to. Then Dorian Gray attempts to make change, by destroying what he thinks is the issue; the painting. Unfortunately, He realized too late his self destruction had gone too far and he could no longer come back. Dorian gray was a true tragic hero.
