The Myth of Sisyphus (Irony and hyperbole) Situational Irony: When Zeus sent Thanatos (Death) after Sisyphus because of his betrayal. Sisyphus was able to outwit Death because he asked Thanatos to demonstrate how a pair of handcuffs worked and then locked them on Death himself or he used some trick to entrap Death in heavy chains. But you would expect that there was no way that Sisyphus was able to escape Death but his intelligence outsmarted Thanatos and he trapped Death. Verbal Irony: When Sisyphus told the Queen that his wife’s neglect of funeral ceremonies and sacrifices might set a bad example for other widows in the future. The Queen fell for his pleas and let him return to the surface of the earth, so he can arrange for his funeral,
punish his wife for neglecting her duties, and teach her respect for the lords of the Underworld. But the truth is that Sisyphus had no intentions of returning to the Underworld and his wife did nothing wrong, he just used it as an excuse to escape the Underworld. Dramatic Irony: The reader and the audience realizes that Sisyphus is doing wrong things, but Sisyphus doesn’t recognize it and continues to do things such as cheating on the gods. He also has killed, raped and stole in his life. Hyperbole: The hyperbole of the myth is that Sisyphus was able to escape death twice. This is dramatic because you wouldn’t expect someone to not die when they did something that is unacceptable (Cheating on the gods). For example: When Sisyphus handcuffed Thanatos and was able to escape, is dramatic because you would think that he would die but because of his cleverness, he was able to getaway.
For situational irony I choose the novel or movie .”The Maze Runner.” The situational irony that happened in this story was when Alby and Minho try to examine a weird creature. They wanna bring it back to the glade where they live ,but the griever is actually alive and injuries Alby.Which it makes it difficult to go back to go to the glade. This is situational irony, because now they're trapped inside the maze with the griever with one injured person.
The irony is thick in this book of the Odyssey. Odysseus's pride creates the situation with Polyphemos and allows Odysseus achieve glory, but eventually causes his downfall at the hands of Poseidon. Ultimately, Odysseus sails away from the island glorified and cursed by his heroic traits.
The first instance of irony deals with Oedipus’ ankles. After his parents heard of the prophecy they tried to find a way...
Another example of irony is when Leonce comes back from his night of enjoyment and tries to wake Enda up to be his audience. Leonce gets annoyed when she does not give him her attention and here the voice of the story refers to Edna as him “sole object of his existence”. “He thought it very dis...
“Fear me,love me,do as I say,I’ll be your slave” says Jareth The Goblin King from the Labyrinth. By using irony, the author of a story can create a surprising events. Authors use multiple kinds of irony to make stories more surprising.
The Allegory of the Cave, and The Myth of Sisyphus, are both attempts at explaining some aspect of the way people think or why humans do as observed. Both stories illustrate the same idea: without necessary and proper exposure to change, thinking is limited and ignorance is the direct product.
In the essay The Myth of Sisyphus, Albert Camus attempts to give answers to some tough questions. He wants to know if life is worth living or how we can make it worth living, as well as whether or not it is possible to live with certainty. To him, the absurd man realizes that life is absurd after his expectations are repeatedly contradicted and he realizes the world is an unreasonable place that cannot be explained. These unreasonable expectations of certainty ultimately cause many absurd men to think that life is not worth living when they are faced with what they feel is a hopeless situation. Camus offers an alternative to the problem the absurd man faces and it is not suicide or “Philosophical suicide”. Other philosophers commit philosophical suicide by suggesting that there is enough evidence, whatever it maybe, that one should survive on hope alone or make some leap. But Camus thinks that if a person is honest and truthful to themselves that they know they are nothing more than “a stranger” in this world. So how does one live a life worth living when faced with absurdity?
Irony is the discrepancy between what is said and what is done. For example, Harry talks about how his old girlfriend broke up with him. Harry says, “She gave me a bunch of crap about me not listening to her enough, or something. I don’t know, I wasn’t really paying attention” ( Dumb and Dumber).
Irony is used very often by Poe. Irony is when something occurs that is the exact opposite of how it should be or seem. Irony varies in that it may be displayed through someone’s actions or an ironic happening. An example of irony in someone’s action are in the Cask of Amontillado is when Montressor repeatedly seems concerned for Fortunato’s health, even though his real intentions are to kill him. It also may be considered ironic that Poe named the enemy of Monstressor, Fortunato. Being that Fortunato means fortunate or lucky in Italian, it is ironic that he is very unlucky in that he his buried alive in a wall.
In his works, The Stranger (The Outsider) and Myth of Sisyphus, Camus addresses the consciousness of Meursault and Sisyphus through their fate.
Verbal irony is when a character says one thing but means the opposite. When a reader understands the irony of what a character is saying, then he can truly understand the nature and intentions of the character. An example of verbal irony is when Macbeth says to Banquo, "Tonight we hold a solemn supper, sir,/ And I’ll request your presence" (Macbeth 3.1.13-14). The reader soon discovers that Banquo never makes it to the banquet because he is brutally murdered by order of Macbeth.
One example of dramatic irony is when Oedipus is looking for the killer of the king Laius-his father. The irony here is that he is looking for himself because he is the murder of his father. Oedipus knows that he killed someone, but what he does not know is that it was Laius, the one he murder. Oedipus wants to punish the person who killed Laius, but we, the audience know that Oedipus was the one who killed Laius. Also Oedipus married Jocasta without knowing that she is his mother. We, the audience knew that he was Jocasta's son, but he was unaware of that.
Finally, irony of Fate is used. This is when a result defeats the purpose of an
Verbal irony is also frequently used by Sophocles. There are many instances of this in Oedipus’ dialogue. Such as the statement, “I will fight for him like I would fight for my father. My search will never end until I take in chains the murderer of Laius”, in which Oedipus is unaware that he is actually the murderer.
An example of the third form of irony, cosmic, is found in the story "The Necklace," in which a wife loses a diamond necklace that was lended to her, she and her husband work ten years to pay back the money they lended to buy a new necklace, only to discover the original necklace was fake.
