¨ The Drummer Boy of Shiloh ¨ by Ray Bradbury, takes place in Shiloh Tennessee. How would you feel is your younger brother at the age of 9 or son had to be involved in the war with older men and was a huge target of many of the enemies? Well the young boy in this story, that is exactly how he felt going into this. In the story, the main character Joby does not want to fight or be a drummer boy in the war. He does not want anything to do with the war. However, since he left his home at a young age and is now in this place he has to. Nevertheless, there was someone on this journey that helped Joby realize that he is very important and he will be safe. That man was the General, the general helped Joby realize that he was there for a reason and …show more content…
his reason was very important. That later helped Joby feel better about himself and what he was doing then, Joby was good with it. A symbol is a thing that represents or stands for something else. There are three different symbols that are being talked about. The first symbol is the drum, the drum symbolizes the energy the soldiers get before the war. Another symbol is Joby, who symbolizes a drummer boy and importance to the war and soldiers. The last symbol is the General. He symbolizes comfort and safety to Joby as he helps Joby get through the war. The drum symbolizes the energy that the soldiers get before war. In the story, before the men went into war the young boys would play a beat at their own pace and that was the pace the men in the war would act as, like it says in the text, “ If Joby beat slow tomorrow the heart would beat slow in the men. They would drowse in the fields on their muskets. They would sleep forever, after that, in those same fields, their heart slowed by a drummer boy and stopped by the enemy lead” ( Bradbury 171 ). This example proves the drum was a symbol as energy to the soldiers because the faster and louder the beat was the more ready and safe the soldiers felt. Another example of how the drum would symbolizes energy to the soldiers is because when the beat off the drum was at a nice steady pace the soldiers would walk, stand, and act as if they were the beat. In the text it says, “ But if he beat a sure, steady ever faster rhythm, than, then, their knees would come up in a long line down over that hill, one knee after the other like a wave on the ocean shore” ( Bradbury 171). This example proves the drum was a symbol of energy to the soldiers because if the beat was steady and had a fast rhythm then they would move steady with a fast paced. The more energetic the beat was the more energy the soldiers had during the war. Joby symbolizes a drummer boy and an important aspect of the war and to the soldiers.
In the story Joby left home at a very young age and ended up becoming a drummer boy. He was nervous and really, really did not want to be a drummer boy in the war at all but then he has somebody known as the General come and talk to him about how his role is important in the war. The General tells him, ¨You're the heart of the army “(Bradbury 171). For example, this shows that Joby is a symbol to the soldiers and the war itself because Joby is the person who beats the drum for the soldiers to hear and gives the soldiers what they need to complete the war. Another way Joby is a symbol to the soldiers and the war because when Joby beats the drum it give the soldiers their orders so they know what to do. The beat that Joby beats also lets the soldiers know that they are close to home and there are still others fighting with them. The story General also says that ¨ Joby was his right hand and his left hand. He gave the orders but, Joby sets the pace¨ ( Bradbury 171 ). This proves that Joby is a symbol to the soldiers because he is the one who says how fast and how slow he wants the soldiers to go or how excited or sad he wants the soldiers to …show more content…
be. My last symbol is the General.
The General is symbolizes comfort and safety to Joby. In the story Joby was really, really scared and sad but the General was always there to tell Joby how important he was to the soldiers and the war. In the story it states that, ¨ I got to make one army of them. And for that boy I need you ¨ (Bradbury 171 ). This proves that the General symbolizes comfort to Joby because he is telling him that he needs Joby to help him with running the army. Another way the General symbolizes comfort to Joby is when he talks to him about how he is feeling towards the war. The story says “You ready for tomorrow or the next day, Joby? I think so sir. You want to cry some more, go ahead. I did the same thing last night. You did sir?¨ ( Bradbury 170 ). This proves that the General is comforting Joby because he is telling him that even though Joby is crying now it is ok because the General (him) did the same thing last night. The General also expresses his feeling with
Joby. In conclusion, there were three different symbols in the story ¨ The Drummer Boy of Shiloh¨.The first symbol was the drum, the drum symbolized the energy and excitement the soldiers got during and before they went to war. Another example, was Joby. Joby symbolized a drummer and an important part of the war and also to the soldiers. My last example is the General. The General played a major part in keeping Joby here by comforting him and insuring his safety during the war. If it was not for the General Joby most likely would not have been here.

Bobbie Ann Mason explores a relationship conflict in the short story “Shiloh.” Manson uses a metaphor of craft building as a way to tell the story of Leroy and Norma’s relationship. Craft show how easily an object is build and how a mistake can deform the outcome. In the story “Shiloh, craft building is used to display what takes place between Leroy and Norma. The craft building metaphor symbolizes Leroy wanting to restart his life and Leroy wanting to rebuild his life and Leroy wanting to rebuild his relationship with Norma. The craft building for Leroy to build a Log Cabin also foreshadows the outcome of the relationship.

In the novel Shiloh, historian and Civil War expert Shelby Foote delivers a spare, unflinching account of the battle of Shiloh, which was fought over the course of two days in April 1862. By mirroring the troops' movements through the woods of Tennessee with the activity of each soldier's mind, Foote offers the reader a broad perspective of the battle and a detailed view of the issues behind it. The battle becomes tangible as Foote interweaves the observations of Union and Confederate officers, simple foot soldiers, brave men, and cowards and describes the roar of the muskets and the haze of the gun smoke. The author's vivid storytelling creates a rich chronicle of a pivotal battle in American history.
At the beginning of the Civil War, leaders in the North and South were tasked with selecting the best men possible to lead their troops. Both sides needed to find men of outstanding character in order to succeed in their war efforts. Robert E. Lee showed himself as exactly such a man. President Abraham Lincoln agreed and sought out Lee, an accomplished U.S. military veteran with 32 years of service, to lead the Union troops. Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy, knew Lee lived in Virginia, a state that had succeeded from the Union. Davis wanted Lee to command the Confederate Army. Ultimately, Robert E. Lee, a man of great character who valued relationships as the crucial element in leadership, honored those around him and displayed
In the story "Shiloh" by Bobbie Ann Mason, The reader gets different points of view and different feelings about the characters and the story. In this story the narrator explains how time and distance can create a gap between two people. It also talks about how naïve Leroy really is and also how self-centered he is. It allows the reader to understand that sometimes in doing something good people could be doing something that hurts others.
The story takes place through the eyes of a German infantryman named Paul Baumer. He is nineteen and just joined up with the German army after high school with the persuasion of one of his schoolteachers, Mr. Kantorek. Paul recalls how he would use all class period lecturing the students, peering through his spectacles and saying: "Won't you join up comrades?"(10). Here was a man who loved war. He loved the "glory" of war. He loved it so much as to persuade every boy in his class to join up with the army. He must have thought how proud they would be marching out onto that field in their military attire.
War can destroy a young man mentally and physically. One might say that nothing good comes out of war, but in Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front, there is one positive characteristic: comradeship. Paul and his friends give Himmelstoss a beating in which he deserves due to his training tactics. This starts the brotherhood of this tiny group. As explosions and gunfire sound off a young recruit in his first battle is gun-shy and seeks reassurance in Paul's chest and arms, and Paul gently tells him that he will get used to it. The relationship between Paul and Kat is only found during war, in which nothing can break them apart. The comradeship between soldiers at war is what keeps them alive, that being the only good quality to come out of war.
Bagby, the author utilizes the literary device, imagery, to illustrate the fact that he will never be able to forget the severity of the war and the fact that fighting in the war causes him to struggle to keep his sanity due to the terrifying realities he faces. For instance, Bagby writes, “I will never be the same though, never, never, never. If I have to go into battle again, if I am not killed, I will come out insane... The friends I lost and the many bodies I carried back to the helicopters to be lifted out, I will never forget” (Bagby 1). In this passage, Kenneth W. Bagby wrote to his parents that he was afraid of having to go into battle again because felt he would go insane. By using descriptive language, the author is able to appeal the the reader’s sense of fear and helps the reader visualize Bagby carrying soldiers that are injured or deceased to be taken out. With this in mind, the readers can see that war is not an event that Bagby is able to let go of because what he experienced was so horrifying that it will leave a permanent burden on his shoulders. Moreover, Bagby writes “ I got to know this boy well, and he was my best friend. His name was Dan Davis. On Monday morning, the 15th of November, he died in my arms of two bullet wounds in the chest” (Bagby 1). In this quote, Kenneth W. Bagby described the death of his best friend, Dan Davis, which he met on the ship to Vietnam. By being specific about how Dan
When the war breaks out, this tranquil little town seems like the last place on earth that could produce a team of vicious, violent soldiers. Soon we see Jim thrown into a completely contrasting `world', full of violence and fighting, and the strong dissimilarity between his hometown and this new war-stricken country is emphasised. The fact that the original setting is so diversely opposite to that if the war setting, the harsh reality of the horror of war is demonstrated.
...and wounds soldiers but murdering their spirits. War hurts families and ruins lives. Both stories showed how boys became in terrible situations dealing with war.
The author George Elliot once said “don’t judge a book by its cover.” Appearance can be very misleading, and you shouldn't prejudge the worth or value of something by its outward appearance alone. This philosophical idea has been included in many works of literature, including the timeless classic To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee. The novel takes place in the town of Maycomb, Alabama during the 1930s. Many citizens of Maycomb tend to make judgements based on outward appearances alone. In the novel, Lee uses minor characters such as Boo Radley, Mrs. Dubose, and Tom Robinson to convey the book’s theme of prejudice.
This particular asset is the brotherhood soldiers’ forged during battle. This, band of brother, creates a strong connecting between the soldiers, much like those of a tightly knit family. This connection allows the soldiers to watch out for one another, just as brothers do. She depicts that while men are at war, they use each other as support and motivation to help encourage their comrades to perform as instructed. She discusses the value of comradeship in the opening of the chapter, Love and Hate, “The power of love and friendship in enticing men to kill has been widely commented upon… combatants reported they were able to kill because of the love they felt for their comrades” (130). This proves that during times of war, soldiers look towards one another for encouragement and to achieve recognition to boost their psyche. This, in turn, helps the military keep the troop’s moral high and also helps creates a more affective killing machine. This helps the military’s objective and reduces down time caused by soldiers who are unwilling to fight in
