Character Analysis Essay What bring happiness and stability to people life? What is the key to a happy life and prosperity? In this case, having money is the key to all stability to people lives but without money one would be treated differently. In the novel “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” written by Sherman Alexie, the main character is Arnold Spirt. Arnold is a native-Indian teenage boy who lived in a reservation in US and came from a poor family, community, reservation and town called Wellpinit. He try his best to go up in the ranks at school by being able to make a strong impact of himself. He had befriends Gordy, the school’s genius who had helped him in his studies, Roger who was part of the basketball team and Penelope who he later dated. His high school life was getting better until he started to lose close relatives, making it difficult for him to keep moving forward. In Arnold’s life, he could eat challenge for breakfast. He had to deal with many negative factors in his past years that he had lost count but in high school he was different, "None of those guys punched me or got violent. After all, I was a reservation Indian, and no matter how geeky and weak I appeared to be, I was still a potential killer” (Alexie, 2007 pg 63). Arnold was no longer the punching bag in Wellipit, he was a respectful member of Readan High school and I believed he deserved this. Arnold is very strong, he was able to overlook all his fallen family member and continue his path. “I'm fourteen years old and I've been to forty-two funerals….And you know what the worst part is? The unhappy part? About 90 percent of the deaths have been because of alcohol” (Alexie, 2007, pg 200). “And I kept trying to find the little pieces of joy in my life. He didn’t let his tribe members stop him, he didn’t let twenty-two miles stop him, he didn’t let his dead family member stop him, and poverty didn’t stop him either. He was very strong, stronger than before facing challenges in his life and for someone who had reach rock-bottom or a community who will forever be in the bottom, he was able to achieve his goal. His efforts, willpower and determination were able to complete his effort. He had also made a strong impact on his community by proving that he was able to accomplish what others can’t. Junior prove that, in life, resolution, determination and effort for something better can’t be stop and people with that mind set are getting what they want even suffering from poverty. This book is about strength, hope and courage and through Arnold spirt, we see our self and the commitment we as human beings put into to overcome our numerous obstacles that impede us. Sacrifices, challenges and struggle are often the risk we must take in order to be successful and it is a high price to pay and may be painful but it is a price that is worth
