In the poem “Mother to Son” written by Langston Hughes, a mother tries to explain to her son that as he grows up he will face certain hardships and confrontations during his lifetime; He will have no other choice but to overcome such hardships. The mother explains to her son that despite all of the challenges and obstacles she had faced, she has not given up or backed away. She explains how difficult life has been for her and how she has worked so very hard to get where she is today. However, the mother pleads to her son to follow her footsteps in order for him to learn that even though she has had faced continuous challenges and obstacles, even in the face of adversity, she has not once given up. The mother pleads the child to stay strong and to never back down from what life throws your way, and that he must advance through life no matter what. The theme of this poem expresses the hardships and challenges that most African Americans faced, during a time of oppression and prejudice towards them during the 90’s. Also, “and sometime goin’ in the dark, where there ain’t been no light”, suggests how bad times must have been for her in life and what she must of done to make ends meet. To conclude, the mother uses the line “ I’se been climbin; and life for me ain’t been no crystal stair,” which is repeated throughout the poem, deliberately to express the fact that she has never given up in the face of adversity.
