Women in Management positions around the world face many obstacles and challenges. One of the biggest obstacles women were facing was access to higher education. With higher education becoming more readily available women are setting themselves up to gain the knowledge and skills needed to help them succeed in upper management and executive level positions.Another obstacle that women sometimes have to overcome is the physical requirements of a job. Women are just not built like men and don 't have the strength to fulfill the requirements of many jobs, leaving work options more limited. I also feel women are discriminated against in the United States due to their fertility. These large corporations always want to be the priority but a mother 's priority is always her children. If a hiring company finds out you are pregnant or you have children, I don 't think it would be far- fetched to think that your odds of getting the job have been greatly decreased.The cost of child care in the US often times makes it not feasible to work. There is a great deal of sexual harassment that takes place in the workplace in United States as well. Women are sometimes forced or pressured into sexual relationships to advance their positions. In Germany the biggest struggle for women in management seems to be finding a work/life balance after having children. There do not seem to be many after school programs or daycare facilities available. Due to the lack of resources women have to stay home with their children instead of continue or pursue management positions. Unfortunately, even today, women are still trying to prove themselves equal to men in many ways. The “glass ceiling” is perhaps one of the most familiar and evocative metaphors to surface from the 20th century. This expression has been used widely in the popular media as well as in official government reports. The image suggest that although it may be the case now that women are able to get through the front door professional hierarchies, at some point they hit an invisible barrier that blocks any further upward movement. “Below this barrier, women are able to get promoted; beyond this barrier, they are not”. Such a situation can be considered a limiting case for a more general phenomenon: situations in which the disadvantages women face relative to men strengthen as they move up executive hierarches. “Traditional approaches to recruitment, organization and job design, performance management and promotions are often designed in ways that are more suited to men than to women. This is what creates the glass ceiling”. Beyond the limit of job titles, the glass ceiling also creates a pay difference between men and women performing the same work requirements.

Sexism is a major factor in the workforce.Today male and female have a hard time breaking into the opposite gender dominated fields. This has happened because of the media, it has showed us that male have certain “right” jobs, as well as female. Female still dominate traditional female professions like cosmetology jobs are 92.9 percent women working them(Wolfe). If a man were to get into cosmetology they would most likely be judged for having that job, because we stereotype that they can't have a feminine job. Women have a harder time getting into high level positions. “Women make up only 21 of the S&P’s 500 CEOs,” (Berman). This has happened because the media has set in place stereotypes that it is wrong for women to have high level positions. It is getting better, in 2013 women chief financial officers increased 35 percent at large U.S. companies from 2012 (Frier and Hymowitz). The job market for men and women is still unfair but it is starting to get equal.

The gender issues in today’s society are issues to discuss because they are tainting the lives of people from an early age. This is important because girls and boys are showing increasing levels of insecurities that are arising due to fundamental gender issues in society. The masculine stereotype is one the most prevailing causes of gender issues in society, especially the issue of sexism. Our society must address this issue because the cycle of sexism only feeds into peoples’ insecurities. Men should not feel obligated to objectify women to feel masculine and women should not feel like they must be sensual and beautiful to have value. The stereotypes that are being placed on men and young boys effect the attitudes of the women around them and creates a cycle of hypersexualization and sexism, leaving the relationships between genders tainted and women feeling less confident in themselves. By changing the way people think men and women are supposed to be, we can change the way our society values one another and in turn, become a more equal and respectful society.
