I learned about the child life profession through my academic advisor here at Auburn University. While I was meeting with her, we were discussing the passions and values that I had on a personal and professional level, which she then introduced me to Human Development Family Science, with a concentration in Child Life. I am most interested in being an advocate for children and their feelings, as well as preventing the possible traumas that can occur in the hospital. I am interested in being able to use developmentally appropriate strategies to further the patients knowledge of their medical situations as well. Throughout my life, I have been involved in many organizations that provide creative outlets for children who are in difficult situations. …show more content…
My expectation for my practicum experience is to be able to gain more hands-on knowledge of how to assess patients' needs. I have learned many skills that I will be using in my professional career as a Child Life Specialist and I am expecting to see these skills in action through the Certified Child Life Specialist that I will be observing. I hope to see what the everyday experience is like for a Certified Child Life Specialist and see what all occurs during the interaction with the patients as well as behind the scenes. I am expecting to get even more ideas of what I can apply for my internship and ultimately my career. I am excited to complete my practicum so that I am able to further my career and join the workforce. I believe that a Child Life practicum is very beneficial, as you are able to apply your learning as well as learn on what you would do if you were the Certified Child Life Specialist in those scenarios, before going into your internship and job. My career goals are to be a Certified Child Life Specialist and make a difference in people's lives, especially within the hospital …show more content…
I would like to volunteer at any organization I can that expresses they need help in my free time. I have also thought that I will further my education and get my masters degree in Child Life to open more opportunities to grow in my career. I strive to be the best I can be in my future career and hope to live out my dreams of becoming a Certified Child Life Specialist. I am wanting to complete my practicum at East Alabama Health as I have volunteered here before and was able to see as well as be involved in the behind the scenes of what being a Child Life Specialist was like at EAH. Having that experience made me want to see more of this program. I enjoyed being able to see/make the activities and the sensory items that the children were provided with. East Alabama Health would be the best option for me to complete my practicum as it is close, making the commute to my practicum easy access so I can be there on time and on short notice if needed. Knowing some of the staff at East Alabama Health within the child life realm, I understand their values as mine align with
Feelings are the most significant part of human’s creature, but what if it comes to the goal that one’s life is based on? Would it still be that important? In the article, “Dog Lab”, Claire McCarthy discusses her own experiences as a medical student at Harvard school. McCarthy was born in 1963. She did her residency at Boston’s Children’s Hospital and she is now working as a pediatrician at the Martha Eliot Health Center in the Jamaica Plains. During college, she used to keep a journal with her that provided the outline of her writings which she referred to for her books such as Learning How the Heart Beats: The making of a Pediatrician and Everyone's Children : A Pediatrician's Story of an Inner City Practice. In addition to McCarthy being
In the beginning of my senior year I was eager to expand my understanding of how it would be to work in a hospital. An opportunity arose allowing me to volunteer in the hospital at the University of Chicago. I was able to volunteer at the children's playroom, which consisted of a weekly commitment. The daily tasks I had to perform where to enlighten the spirits of children and reduce the amount of anxiety that developed within them when they approached a hospital visit. I would play games, read books, or just company the patients at their bedside. I especially love to interact with the younger patients because their laughter and innocence warms my heart up.
To become a Health Certified Health specialist it takes an individual who is passionate about giving back to their community and making it a healthier and safer environment; it requires a competent individual that is academically trained to assess and determine what is the best for the environment and for the public. According to the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (n.d.) under the CHES exam eligibility section, it states, in order to become a Certified Health Education Specialist an individual must hold a “bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree from an accredited institution of higher education”(para. 2). In addition, one must provide an official transcript that ensures the individual has completed a major in health education or “25 semester hours or 37 quarter
Every day, children, adolescents, and their families experience the stressors of disease, injury or disability. In some circumstances, these children are sent to the hospital and trapped in a world where doctors, nurses and other health care workers come in and out of their small rooms poking, prodding and talking in a medical language that is foreign to them. With the assistance of a nurse to treat and care for the child, a Child Life Specialist (CLS) can help reduce these challenges and promote healthy coping skills and development. As a Capella student, my academic goal is to earn my Master’s in Psychology with a focus in Child and Adolescent Development.
There are few jobs in today’s world that are essential to our society and being a nurse is one of them. Diane Marks Nurse Clinician of Pediatric Allergy at the Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg Manitoba granted me the privilege of sitting down to discuss her career . Through this interview I was able to gain perspective on how being a pediatric nurse encompasses more than what is written in the job description. It is more than just needles and antibiotics, but many times it means being a mother, a sister, a friend, a councillor, and many other roles in the patient’s life.
The main purpose of her position is to help children and families with hospitalization, diagnosis, illnesses, and injuries. She stated that she works in the clinic so she sees patients and families from diagnosis or first visits to multiple return visits. She says she builds solid relationships with the children and their families. “It is most rewarding when I’ve spent time with an anxious child and done “everything” (diagnosis, teaching, medical play, procedure education, and support) and slowly see the change from a child not coping well at all, to coping well with support and slowly not needing me at all; it’s a little sad when they tell me they don’t need me to be present, but I know then that I have done my job because they’ve learned the skills to go through a procedure independently” (Tiller, telephone interview, December 8, 2016). Ms. Tiller stated that one of the challenges is that this is a
Kids aren’t like adults, their bodies are growing and changing constantly and require specific knowledge to understand. I find it interesting learning about children’s mindsets and how their bodies are different from adults. I have always had a passion for working with kids and anytime that I have gotten an opportunity to be around kids and working with them I take it. I love being able to help kids feel better and to see them develop physically and mentally throughout time. Seeing a kids’ reaction to learning something new or feeling better is a highlight to my day which is why I chose to pursue my career in pediatrics as a pediatric nurse.
A Child Protective Service worker is a career that can be mentally and physically exhausting with emotional upheaval and wonderfully rewarding all at the same time. This paper discusses several “best practices’, their descriptions, and how they are put in use to assist the children who need help and the parents who unwillingly become a part of the Child Welfare system; even though they count on the system to help them better themselves and the lives of their children. Child Protective Service workers require extensive training, vast knowledge, multiple values, and strong ethics to effectively assist this
As a future nurse practitioner, I have given immense thought in the selection of a clinical practice based on the primary care setting that utilizes the collaboration model. I have selected this type of clinical practice because it best suits my professional and personal goals. I value autonomy while having the ability to work within a healthcare team and enjoying teach my patients. Nurse practitioners (NP) are a valuable part of the healthcare team. In 1960s, from a vision to improve primary healthcare to under-serviced communities the development of the first NP program developed out of need as a public service and focused on the care of pediatrics and since then the care of other specific populations such as families, adults, geriatrics, and women health has emerged (Anderson & O’Grady, 2009, p. 380).
Practicing in the medical field is a respectable profession, since its main goal is to help others when they are in need. Although, I’m not sure of what job I will have, I do know that it will be in the field of medicine. I hope through the mentoring program I will be able to decide if a Certified Medical Assistant is the job for me.
Life Care Plans are prepared by rehabilitation professionals and most often by those who are certified life care planners. In Canada, life care planners can come from a variety of health care specialties (rehabilitation counsellors, occupational therapists, nurses, social workers, physiotherapists, etc.) The Certified Life Care Planner (CLCP) and Canadian Certified Life Care Planner (CCLCP) designations are the mark of competent, ethical, consultative professionals who go the extra mile, demonstrating their deep commitment to the field of life care planning. These designations are awarded by the International Commission on Health Care Certification (ICHCC) following successful completion of the certifying examination but it is not required
As a traditional Native American saying goes, “Certain things catch your eye, but pursue only those that capture the heart.” My heart was captured by pediatrics at an early age. My journey was started growing up in a small town of India with different but significant healthcare needs and limited availability of resources. During the school life, I was always attracted towards human biology. As a young student, I was very curious and used to ask many questions, and my teachers always explained every principle by scientific reasoning and rational thinking. Childhood, after all, is a time when every human begins to construct their concepts of the physical, social, mental and emotional portions of their life. In turn, these perceptions can profoundly
The career field I picked was Child Psychology. Child psychology is the study of how children act and behave. In general, a childhood psychologist might work with children and their primary caregivers in order to research, assess, and possibly treat developmental issues. Depending on his preferred area of study, a child psychologist will often work with all sorts of children. Not every child that a child psychologist works with is considered to be abnormal. A child psychologist might work with so-called "normal" children for several reasons.
Since I am intrigued by the children’s personalities, I love spending time with them (and that’s why their child-like ways rub off on me). Thus, I believe that my own childish personality and my love of children will motivate me in the near future to help them out with their medical needs. Also, being a pediatrician and helping out children has its own rewards. Not only will I be doing something I enjoy, but I will be getting paid a generous price as well. A pediatrician’s salary is not the highest compared to surgeons or cardiologists, but it’s enough to have a life that is something more than simply satisfying.
In society today, we are working with families and children are more diverse than ever. We are servicing families and children from so many different traditions, beliefs and values. Every family has their own stories. We will find that families and children
