On April 17, 2016, I attended a Celso Piña concert in San Diego, CA. The concert was advertised to take place at the Jacobs center. As I arrived to the venue, I was surprised that it was going to be an outdoor event. Instead of the concert taking place at the Jacobs center, the concert took place at the Market Creek Amphitheater, which was right next to the Jacobs center. This made it better because the weather was just perfect not too hot or too cold. This was a 21 and older event, local tacos shops and microbreweries sold their tacos and beer. In addition, the proceeds from the concert went toward supporting local performing arts and cultural events.

The band is composed of a bassist, guitarist, drummer, Latin percussionist, and accordionist and lead singer Celso Piña. Which I couldn’t get their names, but the drummer and bassist, are Celso’s siblings. Moreover, their lineup of songs included the traditional Colombian cumbia songs such as, Cumbia Sampuesana, and Cumbia sobre el rio, which is a song that mixes cumbia with rap and rock. In addition, they also played vallenato which included the hit Los Caminos de La Vida. Cumbia and Vallenato are both genres that were created in Colombia. Cumbia was first a courtship dance by Afro Colombian slaves. Afterwards, cumbia was influenced by Amerindians and Europeans. Vallenato originates from Colombia’s Atlantic region. Vallenato is very similar to the Blues in the United States, where the musician tells life stories through music. Furthermore, both genres use similar instruments. Instruments that were used by the Natives such as the guacharaca, the caja brought by African slaves, and the accordion brought by the Europeans.
