Imaging have a constant pain streaming through your teeth every day and night. You do not want to smile or show your decayed teeth for the fear of being ridiculed and judged because they are not healthy. This hinders your ability to express happiness because of self-consciousness arising due to unhealthy teeth. Dental erosion is a frequently occurring condition that is found in the mouths of many people. It can cause an extreme amount of harm to the teeth and gums and may also cause oral diseases if it is not treated correctly and quickly. Dental erosion is also commonly referred to as tooth enamel erosion or decay. There are multiple characteristics of humans that can cause dental erosion or speed up the time that it takes for tooth enamel to wear away. Erosion of the enamel is a result of mainly biological factors, chemicals, and behavioral actions (Lussi & Jaeggi, 2008).
Many clinicians and researchers have been concerned about the condition of tooth enamel erosion for many years, which led them to discover that dental erosion has been increasing steadily throughout the world. From the time of the children’s health survey in 1993 compared to 1997, erosion was shown to have increased (Lussi & Jaeggi, 2008). More tests and research based studies resulted in the information that erosion seems to be greater in older adults from 52-56 years old than it is in younger generations of people who range from 32-36 years old (Luggi & Jaeggi, 2008). It has become an issue that many people are suffering from dental erosion without being aware of it. It is very difficult to detect in most cases because the ones that have erosion are uneducated about the issue that they are facing with their teeth (Luggi & Jaeggi, 2008).

...their teeth. The damage can be reduced and sometimes prevented if better care would be taken of people’s teeth. Just brushing teeth an extra time a day, quitting using tobacco and alcohol, and not eating strongly acidic food can help reduce the amount of decay and erosion that affects teeth. However, certain factors, such as aging, cause erosion of the dentine layer of the teeth and cannot be prevented. Tooth decay will eventually affect everyone, but the teeth will stay strong and continue to be healthy if people take proper care of their mouths and have precautions about the damage that may come to their teeth.

For those that have bad habits with cigarettes, Tobacco Cessation Counseling is available. Cigarettes cause tooth loss, rotting, and surface stains; hygienist make sure to pass this information to the patient and help them to understand that quitting is the best option if they want to keep their teeth. As said before, a hygienist informs the patient on what foods to avoid. Nutritional Counseling is provided if a hygienist believes there is danger with a patients teeth such as diseases. (Dental Hygiene Clinic) Any foods with high acidity is something a dental hygienist would recommend avoiding. For example, apples, hard candies, popcorn, diet sodas, and salad dressing. Enamel is the hardest structure in the human body. It’s even harder than bones. When the enamel is exposed to acid, it wears down and erodes. This is how tooth erosion and decay happens. They will educate the patient with what foods to replace the bad ones with. Although, a dentist is who performs the restorations, a hygienist can still inform what will happen. Because of the fact that hygienists usually see patients before the dentist, they will give feedback to the dentist and recommend restorations in the mouth. They specialize in providing clinical and educational services (Sealy Dental Center) so they are very useful to dentists. When a patient has missing, chipped, or sharpened teeth, a restoration is done to replace the originals. Some examples
However, on the a recent visit dated 23/12/13 the patient’s gingival condition had deteriorated, presenting with an increased plaque scores of 34% and bleeding scores to 63%. Intra oral examination also showed generalised oedema and erythema throughout in the mouth in response to this increase in plaque bacteria. The presence of supra-gingival calculus on lower anterior teeth and both sites of upper buccal molars and the patients BPE now reads 212 /121, putting the patients caries risk at a ‘High’ status.
Humans only get one set of adult teeth after losing all of their primary teeth therefore, it is important to take care of them. “Dental caries: Strategies to control this preventable disease” is an article written by Rugg-Gunn, Andrew presents several reasons why dental decay is a widespread disease. Rugg-Gunn cites that the main cause of dental decay is lack of fluoride, poor diet, bacteria from plaque, and sugars. Based on this evidence, Rugg-Gunn concludes that “dental caries can be prevented” (Rugg-Gunn128), but there is no evidence of stopping the disease from happening. While Rugg-Gunn raises a revolving problem around the world with human oral decay he however, does not have a good approach on what decay really is.

Here are the things that you can do besides daily brushing and flossing to stop tooth decay.
Children are often sweet and adorable, but many times they may be eating too many sweets. According to the Channel Four News, it has been shown that the number one disease in children is the reoccurrence of caries, also known as cavities. Could it be too many sweets or could it be the lack of flossing and brushing teeth? For instance, many children go to bed or wake up without brushing their teeth and go throughout the day eating all sorts of food and candy. The result of eating and not brushing could lead to plaque build up and decaying of teeth. This leaves a child extremely unhappy and in excruciating pain. So who is going to fix this pain? Who is going to help prevent decay in millions of people’s mouths? Today, the world is lucky to have a well-studied field of dentistry.. Dentistry has much history, various specialties, advancements, and an irresistible salary.
... the gingiva. The tissue damage that occurs in gingivitis results in reversible destruction to the tissues of the periodontium. Some of the risk factors contributing to gingivitis include the following (American Academy of Periodontology, 2014):
A healthy mouth not only facilitates nutrition of the physical body, but it also develops confidence and sensation of health. Oral conditions effect the general health and disease. Oral hygiene prevents bad breathe, gum diseases and tooth decay. Dentists can diagnose and treat oral affliction at the initial level. This help adults and children to maintain excellent dental health during their lifetime.
Imagine having to spend half your fortune on correcting your teeth.”Tooth decay was a perennial national problem that meant a mouthful of silver for patients, and for dentists a pocketful of gold.” (Wallis, 17) If patients don’t take care of their teeth, many issues can start to appear later in their life. Some patients are not knowledgeable of the correct procedures toward keeping a healthy smile. In order to keep a healthy smile patients must be better informed about the knowledge to achieve that success and also maintain.
Many people do not realize how important the dentist really is but the dentist is just as important as a medical doctor. Preventative dentistry is a crucial component in overall health. Preventative dentistry helps protect against things like gum disease and tooth decay. Gum disease and tooth decay can lead to oral cancer and in some circumstances heart disease.
Over time as individuals age and are faced with access to care issues they may begin to neglect their oral health. As time passes between dental hygiene cleanings or dentist visits the presence of oral disease may begin to increase.
Tooth brushing techniques causing gingival trauma are a significant factor for gingival recession. The frequency, duration and force of brushing all contribute to recession. Excessive force and improper technique may lead to ...
Dental plaque is a bacterial collection with their products on the teeth or other solid oral structures, covered by a jelly-like tenacious material and it is responsible for two major dental diseases; caries and periodontal disease (Chandra, 2000). Good oral hygiene is a foundation step in the development of disease-free oral cavity of infants through adolescents (Srivastava, 2011). Plaque control is of prime importance for the prevention of these diseases and for good dental health as it helps to reduce the number of microorganisms present in the oral cavity, hence, reducing the dental plaque (Muthu and Sivakumar, 2009; Tare, 2007).
Elderly have long been identified as a high risk group for dental disease and poor oral hygiene care. The major barriers to affect good oral hygiene care can include lack of available staff and lack of appropriate oral health knowledge
One last very severe effect of smoking is teeth decay. The reason for teeth decay is tobacco products which damage your gum tissue by affecting the attachment of bone and soft tissue to your teeth. An example of the effect is receding gums. A receding gum line exposes the tooth roots and increases your risk of developing a sensitivity to hot and cold, or tooth decay in these unprotected areas. Additionally, smoking can also contribute to bad breath, stains in the teeth and a build-up of tartar on the teeth.
