Long Term Care and Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids are not something most people want to talk about. Even so, they are very common. In fact, in American well over half of men and women 50 years of age and older suffer from hemorrhoids on a regular basis. While hemorrhoids are often painful, they are very rarely dangerous.
Hemorrhoids are really just veins that are swollen in or around the anus or rectum. Many women develop them during pregnancy, they are frequently caused by straining during bowel movements, or by lifting heavy objects. People who are obese are more likely to develop hemorrhoids as are those who are constipated since extra strain is being placed on the veins.
Hemorrhoids are often discovered during an investigation of the symptoms. The most common of these symptoms include anal pain and itching, bright red blood in the stool, and purple lumps around the anal opening. Because of how they look, external hemorrhoids are often called piles or rectal lumps. If the hemorrhoids are internal, there may not be any physical indication you have them other than the itching and blood.
Most hemorrhoids respond well to warm (not hot) baths with Epsom salts. After the bath, many doctors recommend using an ice pack to numb the area and shrink the swelling. Hydrocortisone creams and suppositories are often used, and many people wipe
Since the most common cause of hemorrhoids in seniors is constipation, this is a good place to start. Constipation can be avoided by eating a diet high in fiber and drinking plenty of water to maintain proper hydration. Fiber can be found in whole grains such as oats and bran, fresh fruits, and vegetables. Proper hydration typically requires at least 5 to 6 eight-ounce glasses of water each day. In addition to eating a high fiber diet, avoid foods that lead to constipation such as refined and processed
Improved Compliance. The Rectal Rocket offers extended relief in 1 dosage form for both types of hemorrhoids. The most common formulation provides 3% lidocaine (an anesthetic for pain and itching) and 2.5% hydrocortisone (an anti-inflammatory), and 1% Pramoxine HCl (an anesthetic for pain and itching) in a special suppository blend. **Int J Pharm Compd.
Hemorrhoids are just a swelling of the veins in and around your rectal and anal canal. In their normal state, these veins are designed to help stool pass out of your body, comfortably. When they become inflamed, however, any ordinary bathroom routine can be very painful. For many people, these symptoms are experienced throughout the day. They complain of an uncomfortable, itchy and even painful feeling near the anus. What many people don't realize is that can develop hemorrhoids either internally or externally. An internal hemorrhoid is one that you cannot see and is in your anal canal. These are often unnoticed by sufferers unless they notice some blood when they have a bowl movement.
To prevent constipation: Eat foods that are high in fiber, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and beans. Limit foods that are high in fat and processed sugars, such as fried and sweet
Gonorrhea in women can cause vaginal discharges that are bloody or yellow, painful urination, bleeding between periods, excessive bleeding during menstrual periods, painful intercourse, and lower abdominal pain. Symptoms of rectal infection include discharge, anal itching, and occasional painful bowel movements with fresh blood in the feces. When treated early, there are no long-term consequences of gonorrhea. Doctors usually prescribe a combination of antibiotics, such as ceftriaxone, doxycycline, or azithromycin, which will treat both diseases. Serious complications can occur, however, when left untreated.
Causes of an Inguinal Hernia differ from person to person. During prenatal male development, the testicles descend down the Inguinal Canal, and into the soon to be developed scrotem. In some cases, adolescent and adult males have weak spots near the Inguinal Canal, where the spermatic cord enters the scrotem, leaving the perineum lining more sesceptable to develop a hernia. This is more commonly found in men, since some men don’t have an inguinal canal that properly closes after birth and development. A pre-existing weak abdominal wall is one of the most common causes of an Inguinal Hernia. The most common cause for this condition is overexertion. This includes everything from heavy lifting, straining abdominal muscles during urination and bowel movements, coughing, sneezing, and being overweight. Inguinal hernias can also develop later in life when the abdominal wall weakens due to underuse, or strenuous activity. Women are less likely to develop this type of hernia. When women are diagnosed, it is typically due to pregnancy, overexertion of the abdominal wall, or a combination of both.
Lifestyle changes – Diet and exercise are the ways to healthy living and improved energy. Exercising at least 30 minutes each day and eating a healthy diet high in fiber and rich in nutrients will decrease constipation, bolster your immune system, and help maintain good thyroid functioning (Almandoz & Gharib, 2012).
Hemophillia is a rare bleeding disorder in which the blood does not clot normally. Hemophillia is usually inherited and people born with it have little or no clotting factor (a protein needed for normal blood clotting). These proteins work together with platelets to help the blood clot. When blood vessels are injured, clotting factors help platelets stick together to plug cuts and breaks on the vessels. Hemophillia usually occurs in males with about 1 in every 5 000 males being born with the disease each year. A hemophiliac does not bleed more intensely than a person without it but can bleed for a much longer time. In some severe cases, continuous bleeding occurs after minor trauma or can even happen spontaneously. They may also bleed inside their body(internally), especially in the knees, ankles, and elbows. The bleeding can damage organs and tissues and may be life threatening. There are two main types of hemophilia: A and B. People born with type A are missing or have low levels of clotting factor VIII (1 in 5 000 males). People born with type B are missing or have low levels of clotting factor IX (1 in 20 000 males). About 8 out of 10 people who have hemophillia have type A. The greatest concern for both types is deep internal bleeding and bleeding into joints. Hemophilia is a life long disease, but with proper treatment and self-care, most people maintain an active productive lifestyle.
The definition of uterine prolapse is the uterus gradually descends into the vagina and often times takes the upper portions of the vagina with it. Most often a prolapse is caused by weakened pelvic floor muscles and ligaments. It can present at any stage but often comes in three distinct stages. Once it descends into the vagina walls it can continue to descend until it actually protrudes out of the vagina entrance. In the 1st degree the cervix is still inside the vagina. In the 2nd degree the cervix appears outside the vagina opening and the labia can become irritated and ulcerative. In the 3rd degree there is a complete prolapse outside of the body and it can contain the bladder, uterus and rectum. This condition is sometimes called a complete procidentia. It can be caused by a multitude of reasons. Multiple vaginal births, having larger babies, excessive straining from constipation, heavy lifting or being overweight, weak pelvic floor muscles due to lack of use, aging or going through menopause. Although uterine prolapse can happen to anyone at any age, it’s most common in women who have gone through menopause and for many of the reasons stated above.
...e women already are aware that they have this condition before they try to get pregnant. They usually know because they have experienced extremely painful periods, extremely heavy flows, and, in addition to pain during their menstrual cycle…” (Robertson, 2011).
In rare cases when a patient does not respond to drug treatment or diet and lifestyle changes, surgery may be necessary. Doctors will remove part or all of the colon in attempt to stop the condition. Surgeries for UC are generally successful but significantly decrease quality of life because the patient has to deal with frequent stools due to the absence of a colon.
Uterine Fibroids is a common medical condition that occurs generally in women in reproductive age. Fibroids are considered as benign tumors that grow up in the muscular wall of the uterus. Fibroids are also called leiomyoma or myoma. The size of the fibroids may vary from small sizes (apricot seed) to large sizes (similar to a melon). When fibroids rise up to a large size “The uterus expands to make it look approximating to a 6 or 7 months of pregnancy”. (Gynecologists). They also can grow up as an abnormal whole unit attach to the uterus or develop similar to grapes in different areas around the uterus. (See figure 1)
Postpartum hemorrhage is the leading cause of maternal mortality in the world, according to the World Health Organization. Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is generally defined as a blood loss of more than 500 mL after a vaginal birth, more than 1000 mL after a cesarean section, and a ten percent decrease in hematocrit levels from pre to post birth measurements (Ward & Hisley, 2011). An early hemorrhage occurs within 24 hours of birth, with the greatest risk in the first four hours. A late hemorrhage happens after 24 hours of birth but less than six weeks after birth. Uterine atony—failure for the uterine myometrium to contract—is the most common postpartum hemorrhage (Venes, Ed.).(2013). Other etiologies include lower genital tract lacerations, uterine inversion, retained products of conception and bleeding disorders (Kawamura, Kondoh, Hamanishi, Kawasaki, & Fujita, (2014).
There are two types of DUB. There is anovulatory bleeding or ovulatory dysfunctional bleeding. If the corpeus luteum fails to sustain the developing endometrium, it is considered anovulatory DUB. Ovulatory dysfunctional bleeding is related to the woman’s ovulation status which is directed by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal-ovarian-axis.
At the point when these begin developing, they push on the insides and discourage them, and in this way hold in the liquids and the stool. This can be exceptionally difficult and loathsome issue and will make you have unpredictable solid discharge.
• Cool baths can be soothing. Try adding baking soda or oatmeal to the water to reduce itching. Do not bathe in hot water.
