No Excuse For Animal Abuse: Why Animal Abandonment Is A Problem
How do you feel about animal abandonment? Well animal abandonment is a serious crime in the United States. By abandoning any animal you can serve serious prison time. The state officials take the crime of animal abandonment very seriously. Animal abandonment is a problem because they need attention, it’s not right or humane to abandon them, and the animals do not deserve to be treated in this kind of way.
The first reason why animal abandonment is a problem is because animals need attention from their owners. As stated in “Why People Abandon Animals” by Lisa Towell, the animals starve for attention (Towell 2017). This shows that they need attention because the animals will then

As stated in “Why People Abandon Animals” by Lisa Towell, is that animals become sad and lonely (Towell 2017). This shows animals need attention because if the animals don’t have attention they will be left sad and lonely. In the article it states “The cat handled his new world very well at first, but he then became irritable and unhappy” (Towell 2017). This supports my argument because when animals are not shown attention they then begin to wonder off showing sadness and loneliness. The second reason why animal abandonment is a problem is because it’s not right or humane to abandon …show more content…

Animals are overpopulated, and it is costing countries money to euthanize, or use chemicals kill animals with a shot, animals. Money is also being taken for shelters to operate. Some countries didn’t pay for the euthanization of their pet problem though, they found another way to try to fix the issue. “.... the dogcatchers of New York caught 5,825 dogs, which were then placed into crates and lowered into the East River to drown.”(Jennifer Sexton and Tom Warhol, Domestic Animal Overpopulation). According to Jennifer Sexton and Tom Warhol in Domestic Animal Overpopulation, “Catching, feeding and caring for unwanted animals costs taxpayers and private agencies millions of dollars each year, as do adoption and education programs.” Citizens, animals, and shelters are affected by this issue of animal overpopulation. Citizens are affected because their taxes are being put to shelters, the shelters are then cost for chemicals to put the pets to sleep. The animals are th...
Animal cruelty is a rapidly growing nationwide problem. Animals are being battered and starved everyday. There are many forms of animal cruelty; some forms are scientific research, abandonment, and mistreatment.
Sadly this happens to various animals each year that are brought to Kill Shelters. The ASPCA has stated that three to four million animals are euthanized in shelters in the United States. An absolutely shocking 60% of all animals that belong to shelters(McLellan). Many of these animals that are irrationally killed are completely worthy of adoption. The main reason for all these senseless killings is overpopulation.
Animal hoarding is a very common issue, and is not being reported the way that it should be. These situations need to stop being overlooked and dealt with correctly, not only to save the animals’ lives, but to keep the owner and their family in wellbeing. Animals are very important and should be taken care of very well. When they are put into a hoarding situation they cannot go out and get the help that they need. We need to be their voice and speak up for them.
It's crazy how they will put an animal down for not having a home or attacking a human being. Do we give animals a choice in their lives? No, we do not, we just do what we think is best for that animal. Many people fail to realize a lot of things. They always say if it was me, I wouldn’t want that for myself.
The general public has a lack of understanding of animal hoarding. Many citizens do not realize that anyone can report abuse (Donaghey 2011). There are “…900 to 2,000 new cases [found] every year… with a quarter million animals falling victim” in the United States alone (Animal). If every hoarder has a neighbor on either side there are at least 4,000 witnesses to these crimes yearly. One reason for witnesses not reporting cases is the unknown fact that hoarded animals “range in species from cats and dogs to reptiles, rodents, birds, exotics and even farm animals” (Animal). Hoarded animals show signs of abuse which witnesses can detect such as heartworms, embedded collars, beaten, social issues, emaciated, or if they generally look unhealthy (Donaghey 2011).
It is estimated by the American Humane Society that animal shelters in the United States care for “6-8 million animals,” and out of this number, “an estimated 3-4 million are euthanized” (Animal Shelter Euthanasia. 2008). To put this in perspective, that's roughly 10,000 animals being put down every day. There are simply not enough people willing to adopt these animals. Sick, injured, diseased, violent, and old suffering animals will be put down. And unfortunately perfectly able and healthy animals, with shiny healthy coats and no behavioral problems waiting for their adoption, will also be put down. This is because shelters are continuously running out of room. Keep in mind, though, that this is said in respect to the fact that these animals could instead be suffering a painf...
This is making the animal shelters fill up with puppies, kittens, and other animals. Millions of animals are taken to a shelter a year. If the animals don’t get adopted after a certain amount of time they could euthanized. Not all animals will be euthanized though because there are some no kill shelters. Only thousands of strays get back home to their original owners.
Have you ever wondered, how it feels to be in a place where is overcrowded, and you are next in line to be euthanize? This is the life of the shelter animal when no one adopts them for a certain period of time. According to American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or known as ASPCA, each year, approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized, which are 1.2 million dogs and 1.4 million cats. I am sure; most of you have some point in your life, owned a dog or a cat. Whether you are an animal lover or not, you don’t want to see innocent animals losing their lives. I personally have adopted a dog from a local shelter. There is no doubt that pet adoption from a shelter is a satisfying decision that will save innocent
Every 60 seconds an animal is abused. Dogs, cats, horses, and many other types of animals are being neglected and tortured everyday, yet resulting in few and minor consequences for the perpetrators. Animal abuse is prevalent in the United States and has been an ongoing issue since the 1970's, and prior to. Society as a whole has chosen to avoid the facts and arguments about animal cruelty, because to some it is seen as acceptable and typical. It becomes much more frowned upon when people actually see the results of the cruelty, especially in the media.
Taken from the only place you've ever known. Away from the only family you have. Kept in crates and cages to be sold. Removed from their home, exotic animals are put in yours for personal amusement. This act is ruinous an inhumane, it violates the basic rights of human and animals. Exotic animals have a rightful place in their natural habitats, not as pets, because they endanger the community, become sick, and their owners abandon them.
Animals should not be kept in captivity for any reason unless they have been harmed and need to receive treatment but they should be released as soon as they are healthy and capable of taking care of themselves again. The use of a captive animal for research, education, or entertainment is just wrong no creature deserves to have their life taken away for our benefit. Would you want to be captured and put in a tiny box or a fake little ecosystem, or abused and tortured because apparently that’s the only possible way to train an animal? How about just knowing that your real life is over and now all you get to do is put on a show for people? That is what we put these animals through for our entertainment we tear children away from their parents. In what way is that right? It’s just like kidnapping we put humans in jail for that but only when it’s another human. People act like just because they aren’t human that its ok and they lie to themselves telling themselves that its okay and that the animal will be taken care of, fed, and have a nice little “fake” forest or desert to live in. Just think of it as having a zoo full of humans, or stealing other humans to make profit or teach someone something new by doing something totally wrong and unethical.
One Green Planet says that there are still more than 70 million needy animals, only around 6-8 million enter shelters, and only about 20% adopt their pets from a shelter. Such a small percentage but there are still many animals getting put down. One of the main reasons I am against animal breeding is because most of the animals who get bought end up getting abandoned, which is why the number of strays increase. Like I said, why should anyone bring more animals (cats and dogs) into this world when there are more than enough in a local shelter waiting for their forever homes?
Animal rights imply that animals have a right to their own life just as we do; that they are not ours to mess around with. To an extremist this argument also means we must maintain a vegetarian diet, not wearing leather or fur, and not keeping animals as pets. A moderate animal protection says that our responsibility toward animals is that we have a moral obligation not to cause them unnecessary pain.
Abandoned dogs, those animals left without supervision, reproduce, breed puppies that are also not wanted and are mistreated and neglected. In conclusion, I hope to have shed some new light on just what animal cruelty is and what it consists of. I hope that with this information, people will be more open to what they see. Hopefully this information will cut down on animal abuse and will make people watch out for mistreatment of animals. I hope that people will think twice before abusing animals.
