A prime example is the difference in mannerism in which doctors and nurses are trained to approach communication. Nurses are generally taught to be broad and narrative with their descriptions of patient conditions and clinical situations (Leonard et al., 2004). On the other hand, physicians tend to learn to be concise and efficient (Leonard et al., 2004). This can result in communication inconsistencies and cause delays during the process. By embedding standardized protocols and communication methods, it can help to lessen these differences. An example of miscommunication within the hospital setting could be based on if a nurse didn’t fully communicate a patient’s allergy to a particular type of medication to another nurse or physician. On the other hand, if the nurse properly informed another individual about the allergy, but the individual misheard or forgot, that could also result in detrimental effects. In addition, hierarchy within the healthcare organization can limit individuals from voicing their opinions and sharing their thoughts (Stordeur, D’Hoore, & Vandenberghe, 2001). It requests all the stress hormones to be released from the hippocampus or the hypothalamus, the pituitary and the adrenal glands. This gets the body ready for either flight, freeze or fight mode (Rosenthal, 2015). These glands releases noradrenaline, epinephrine, cortisone and glucose which gets pumped into your limbs making you ready to fight or run away from the situation (Seahorn, 2016). The increase in stress hormones interferes with the body to regulate itself and the nervous systems remains highly activated leading to the body being fatigue (Rosenthal, 2015).

Communication is a process of conferring information between individuals through use of speech, writing or various other means, and is critical to the success of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) (Higgs, McAllister & Sefton, 2012, p. 5; Rowlands & Callen, 2013; Sargeant, Loney & Murphy, 2008). An MDT must use multiple strategies to enhance communication and ensure their success (Doyle, 2008). An effective MDT generates opportunities that benefit healthcare, which is the reason for the recent dominance of inter-professional care in health practice (Simpson & Patton, 2012, p. 300; Rowlands & Callen, 2013). Many barriers prevent effective communication within inter-professional teams. Lack of communication within MDTs presents challenges to their success, leading to numerous consequences, including the failure of the MDT (London Deanery, 2012; Sargeant et al, 2008). Communication between professionals is the key factor underpinning the potential success or failure of inter-professional teams, the outcome of the functioning of MDTs will either benefit or impair care of patients.
The demands on health care providers to provide the best quality care for patients is increasing. With added responsibilities and demands on our health care workers, it is hard not become overwhelmed and forget the reason and purpose of our profession. However, there is a way where all professionals can meet and come together for a common cause, which is the patient. A new approach in patient care is coming of age. Communication within the workplace is often overlooked or not given as much importance as most people should allow, given the amount of time that is spent there. Beyond the more basic verbal speech, one must be aware of the nonverbal symbols and noise that can have an effect on communication. There are also cultural, environmental and internal factors that can effect communication and how successful it can be. The various perceptions that an individual has developed over their life can also effect communication. I have explained three of the seven principles that I use while interacting with my patients daily. The three methods of communication were defined and explained how each is used in the healthcare setting. The communication method that works best on my unit was explained per my unit’s preference. The four-ethical principle regarding communication were explained along with how these principles and team communication affect patient safety.
