On February 15, 1889 the ship of Main exploded while anchored. The number of lives lost were 260, which consisted of mostly sailors. At this time Cuba was being colonized by the Spanish in Havana. The time in Cuba was horrible due to the conditions the Spanish were treating them which mostly involved starving them. The main cause of the war and the explosion of the ship is unknown. But considering the tension between America and Spain at this time, as soon as the Main explosion America had someone to blame. The community, mostly was outraged, but focused more on the week to two week press that claimed that McKinley did not fully accuse Spain for the incident. Before the war started the Spanish and Americans were not sure what caused the explosion of the ship. Spanish soon claimed to be innocent but America would not take it, Spain claimed that the explosion of the boat happened in the internal side of the boat but the evidence gathered by the U.S claimed to be external. McKinley opposed war saying that it was not the best option that first America was going to investigate. The war was soon created by which mostly claim to be by the Yellow Press. The U.S congress soon passed the Teller amendment for any intentions in the annexation of Cuba. McKinley only hoped for the war to be over fast. The American navy was not as strong as the Spain navy which included Cubans and Philippines. This gave advantages to Spain but not to the point to win the war. America won the war by William Sampson establishing a blockade that extended from Havana, Cuba to the north coast and soon enough the south side. The wat pretty much ended like any other war with a simple treaty. The treaty was the Treaty of Paris which claimed the U.S to give 25 million dollars to Spain, to pay for the damages in the
