Brush your Teeth! Brush your Teeth! Brush your Teeth! These are some of the most annoying words heard from parents growing up. But for a second take into consideration a piece of metal, left alone and not attended to, its fate most definitely is; rust. A tooth is like that piece of metal and decay is the rust. For many people, especially at a tender age, want constantly seek to answer the question of “Why do I need to brush my teeth?” Brushing teeth has been a huge pain. Difficult to have to remember to do it twice a day, every day of life and the actual activity is just not that enjoyable. Although many argue that it would take many consecutive days of skipping brushing the teeth to have gum disease start developing in the mouth, the harsh reality is that this is very much possible so be careful. Missing one day often times lead to missing other days. Yet another reason why it is crucial to regularly brush the teeth is because it helps people’s breath not to stink. Brushing the teeth at least two times a day keeps bacteria out of the mouth and keeps them from being blown into peoples’ faces every time one opens the mouth. (Hill Sampson, 2013.) Using toothpaste is also very important in the brushing process. According to the American Dental Association ADA, brushing with toothpaste is important for several reasons. First and foremost, a toothpaste and a correct brushing action work to remove plaque, which is a sticky harmful film of bacteria that grows on our teeth that causes cavities, gum disease and eventual tooth loss if not controlled. Additionally toothpaste contains fluoride, which makes the entire tooth structure more resistant to decay and promotes remineralization, which aids in repairing early decay before the damage can even be seen. (Hill Sampson, 2013.) Therefore the ingredients in toothpaste help to clean and polish the teeth and remove stains over time most toothpaste also comes in a variety of flavors and help freshen to breath and leave our mouth
Humans only get one set of adult teeth after losing all of their primary teeth therefore, it is important to take care of them. “Dental caries: Strategies to control this preventable disease” is an article written by Rugg-Gunn, Andrew presents several reasons why dental decay is a widespread disease. Rugg-Gunn cites that the main cause of dental decay is lack of fluoride, poor diet, bacteria from plaque, and sugars. Based on this evidence, Rugg-Gunn concludes that “dental caries can be prevented” (Rugg-Gunn128), but there is no evidence of stopping the disease from happening. While Rugg-Gunn raises a revolving problem around the world with human oral decay he however, does not have a good approach on what decay really is.
Since I was a child my mom used to tell me “you needed to brush your teeth at least twice a day because if you don’t do so, you are going loose them forever, and guess what, once you lose them they won’t grow back again”.
