Although there were many forms of Christianity it was eventually standardized and given validity in 380 AD, by the Roman Emperor Constantine. At this this time in history, Roman Catholicism became the official religion of the Roman Empire.
The first difference, and what may be considered the biggest difference between the Catholic and Protestant Church, is their views on the authority of the Pope. The Catholics have a Pope, the current Pope being Pope Francis, who lives in Vatican City in Rome and is a member of high importance to the Catholic Church. He is viewed as the head of the church and is believed to be the “Vicar of Christ” which is basically a...

Christians on the other hand have different interpretations of the bible, they are willing to accept and reject individual teachings from the bible. The key to salvation is baptism, Christians can be baptized any time after the belief and faith in Christ is acquired. Catholics are usually baptized after birth. Christians aside from biblical readings also include the readings of the gnostic gospel, which were excluded from the bible during the fourth century. Catholics don’t follow the gnostic gospel, as an alternative they rely on sacred traditions which are believed to be handed down throughout the centuries. When it comes down to confessing your sins, Catholics confess their sins to a priest where they must sit down and have a face to face conversation with the priest and confess all of the sins that they have committed in order for them to be forgiven by God, Christianity does not require having to confess to a priest instead all they must do is confess to god and all of their sins will be

Catholicism. There are three major differences in the teaching of the two. Christianity teaches by scripture and what the bible says, where Catholicism teaches by tradition. They believe that the church is the judge of the truth. They also believe that salvation comes from doing works and that people can’t be sure of eternal life. Christians believe that salvation comes from admitting your sins, asking for forgiveness, and accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and savior. Catholics believe that Mary is the mediator between God and man, whereas Christians believe that Jesus Christ
The first Christian Church (the Orthodox Church) came to be in the Late Roman Empire because of Jesus of Nazareth, and the first Christian Emperor Constantine. The messages Jesus wanted to reach his disciples were this: brotherhood, equality, elevation of the poor, and anti-materialism. He preached a lifestyle that changed mankind, and gave people hope. Jesus gave the people of the Late Roman Empire some hope, and guided them through times of need. On the other hand you have the Catholic Church in Medieval Europe, with a lot of power in the medieval society. The Catholic Church was the western counterpart the Eastern Orthodox Church and it slowly became a very strict religion. Their mission was simple: faith+good works=salvation. Religion over 2000 years ago was almost more important then, than it is today. It was new, and it was important, the rise of Christianity played a central role in the early historical

Progress and the Immovable Will of Catholicism and Islam The religious authority in Catholicism and Islam is found in their similar structures of an authority figure who is the final word on the interpretation of their religious text. At their very beginning, Catholicism and Islam were extremely similar: Two religions that preached peace and forgiveness, led by a man whose followers thought him a divine prophet, come to revitalize the Word of God and bring salvation to the unbelievers.

My definition of religion has mostly stayed the same, but my perception of it has changed. At the beginning of the class, I assumed religion was something you believed based on your moral principles. I now believe that those moral principles are based on the religion that you believe in. Your religion changes your perception of the world and how to go about in it. Your religion tells you what is right and wrong in the world and answers all of the big questions one asks. Religion according to our book is, “A pattern of beliefs and practices that expresses and enacts what a community regards as sacred and/or ultimate about life” (Van Voorst 6). That definition was one thing that really got me thinking about my own personal idea of what religion
