This story follows the life of a man named Obadiah Elihue, however he just goes by Parker. His real name sounds like the name of a prophet which might be why he resents it so much. Parker and his ugly catholic wife, Sarah Ruth, are possibly the worst match for each other. Parker lives in sin with the majority of his body covered in tattoos, whereas Sarah Ruth is a devout catholic that even hates the idea of the “vanity of vanities (O’Connor)” that is his tattoos. Parker only married her because that is the only way he could achieve any intimacy with her. After they are married, Sarah Ruth’s favorite part of Parker is his back because he has not marked it. One day, Parker manages to form an idea in his head that he needs to put a tattoo on his back that she simply will not be able to resist. When he returns home to show Sarah Ruth, he readily claims his name as Obadiah Elihue. When she finally lets him in and sees his back, she could not be more livid. When Parker attempts to tell her that the tattoo is of God, she can only scream “Idolatry! Enflaming yourself with idols under every green tree! I can put up with lies and vanity but I don’t want no idolater in this house (O’Connor)!” She beats him and kicks him out and the story ends with O.E. crying under a tree. Parker seems to have struck upon two revelations in the story. His tattoo is his first revelation as it gives him his faith. His second revelation is when after he is beaten by Sarah Ruth, crying under the tree, still calling himself Obadiah Elihue. Parker
