Flannery O’Connor’s Catholic faith shows heavily in her writing’s, but yet most of her characters are Protestant. Protestants fall under Western churches, and follow the principle of Reformation. Flannery wants her characters to suffer, to feel anguish and find redemption. While Flannery O’Connor has written many complex texts with different themes, her faith is always the fueling force behind her creativity. Contrary to popular belief, O’Connor’s notions have only widened her points of view in her writings. O’Connor uses faith in her work to show the readers spirituality and grace.

Woodiwiss explains the idea of faith for O’Connor as being a totaling force, meaning it’s a huge or even main part of her stories. She claims that “the transition from one state of belief to another often comes as a shock to the person experiencing it” (Woodiwiss par. 1). Here she is referring to the revelations that O’Connor’s stories are known for and how she relates all the stories and epiphanies to grace and spiritual awareness. A great example of this is when the grandmother in “A Good Man is Hard to Find” has the shocking epiphany with The Misfit. The grandmother comes to the reality that she is quite like The Misfit in terms of her religious hypocrisy, as she is far too fixated on her material possessions and not fixated on her grace which can lead her to spiritual loss and loss of grace. An example of the “shock” that Woodiwiss mentions shows when the grandmother finds out that The Misfit has his doubts in Jesus’s ways. Similar scenarios are found all throughout O’Connor’s stories, such as in her short “The Displaced Person”, where the character Mrs. Shortley finds religious redemption just before death. With this in life this is when most people come to find religion and grace in their lives. An excellent example of this involves the grandmother in “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, as she faces a traumatic accident and the murdering of her family. All these terrible things happen to the grandmother, just as she comes to a revelation that she is not in the right place with grace and spiritual awareness. O’Connor also uses the concepts of nature to represent grace, or perhaps the opposite. O’Connor describes the landscape in “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, as being rather eerie. It’s a way of foreshadowing the events that will happen to the family. As Clark M. Brittain describes it, “the feeling that sinister forces have laid a trap for the doomed family” (Brittian par. 5). In most of Flannery O’Connor’s short stories a number of characters have a hard time seeing an ultimate reality in their life. They tend to have a distorted grasp on reality but not all in the same way. In the story “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” the Misfit and the Grandmother are prime examples. The actions and the way of life of the Misfit and Grandmother are mostly due to the fact that they are living in an false reality where they are in their own little world, where in the Misfit’s world everything goes with no worry of repercussion in the Grandmother’s case she can do no wrong because she has a false perception of what is right.

The biographic influence is especially strong on the literary work of Flannery O'Connor. Her life and experiences are reflected through her work in themes, characters, descriptions and style. There are two important features of her life, which had marked the short stories and novels of Flannery O'Connor: The South of the United States and her religion, Catholicism. These two aspects are reflected in her vision of life, society and above all in the vision of the human race.
An ardent Catholic as she was, Flannery O’Connor astonishes and puzzles the readers of her most frequently compiled work, A Good Man Is Hard to Find. It is the violence, carnage, injustice and dark nooks of Christian beliefs of the characters that they consider so interesting yet shocking at the same time. The story abounds in Christian motifs, both easy and complicated to decipher. We do not find it conclusive that the world is governed by inevitable predestination or evil incorporated, though. A deeper meaning needs to be discovered in the text. The most astonishing passages in the story are those when the Grandmother is left face to face with the Misfit and they both discuss serious religious matters. But at the same time it is the most significant passage, for, despite its complexity, is a fine and concise message that O’Connor wishes to put forward. However odd it may seem, the story about the fatal trip (which possibly only the cat survives) offers interesting comments on the nature of the world, the shallowness of Christian beliefs and an endeavour to answer the question of how to deserve salvation.
In O’Connor’s short stories she is writing from a catholic perspective, which was not very noticeable at first, but once it is realized that her stories are written with a religious undertone about grace it is hard to forget. In her short stories such as “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, “Revelation” and “Everything That Rises Must Converge” the characters are people who believe they are better than some other class and have a “holier than thou” attitude towards many, especially directed towards African-Americans who are seen as second class citizens. Because of their attitude and way of life, O’Connor gives them a chance to rethink their lives or show them grace, through an act that shocks them. O’Connor uses “freaks” to give the characters a chance at receiving grace such as the ugly girl in “Revelation”, which causes Mrs. Turpin to rethink the way she treats people she believes to below her and her judgmental ways. The “Freaks” bring about a distinct change in the way the characters view others by showing them the errors of their ways and that times have changed. This could also be considered an act of grace and a sign from God. The settings for the stories seem to be predominately take place in the south, where religion is a major influence in people’s lives during the time her stories take place. This change in their views of the world can be seen in all three of the short stories “Revelation”, “Everything That Rises Must Converge”, and “A Good Man is Hard to find”.
Flannery O’Connor’s Wise Blood follows Hazel Motes’ attempt to abandon his religious beliefs and establish a “Church Without Christ”. Hazel Motes and many of the characters in Wise Blood seek material prosperity, but utilize religion as a means to reach such a goal. This perversion of Christianity for materialistic objectives prevents the characters’ redemption from Christ. Specifically in the case of Motes, it is not until he has lost everything material that he finally accepts Jesus’ divine grace. Religion is a pervasive theme in most of the literary works of the late Georgia writer Flannery O'Connor. Four of her short stories in particular deal with the relationship between Christianity and society in the Southern Bible Belt: "A Good Man Is Hard to Find," "The River," "Good Country People," and "Revelation." Louis D. Rubin, Jr. believes that the mixture of "the primitive fundamentalism of her region, [and] the Roman Catholicism of her faith . . ." makes her religious fiction both well-refined and entertaining (70-71). O'Connor's stories give a grotesque and often stark vision of the clash between traditional Southern Christian values and the ever-changing social scene of the twentieth century. Three of the main religious ingredients that lend to this effect are the presence of divine meanings, revelations of God, and the struggle between the powers of Satan and God.
Flannery O’Connor believed in the power of religion to give new purpose to life. She saw the fall of the old world, felt the force and presence of God, and her allegorical fictions often portray characters who discover themselves transforming to the Catholic mind. Though her literature does not preach, she uses subtle, thematic undertones and it is apparent that as her characters struggle through violence and pain, divine grace is thrown at them. In her story “Revelation,” the protagonist, Mrs. Turpin, acts sanctimoniously, but ironically the virtue that gives her eminence is what brings about her downfall. Mrs. Turpin’s veneer of so called good behavior fails to fill the void that would bring her to heaven. Grace hits her with force and their illusions, causing a traumatic collapse exposing the emptiness of her philosophy. As Flannery O’Connor said, “In Good Fiction, certain of the details will tend to accumulate meaning from the action of the story itself, and when this happens they become symbolic in the way they work.” (487). The significance is not in the plot or the actual events, but rather the meaning is between the lines.
Although Flannery O’Connor didn’t even live to see her 40th birthday, her fiction endures to this day. In “A Good Man is Hard to Find” and “Everything that Rises Must Converge,” O’Connor effectively deals with the two huge themes (topics) of religion and racism. These two themes are crucial to understanding much of O’Connor’s great works and are relevant to all readers of O’Connor throughout all ages.
Christianity is an ever occurring theme in O’Connor’s work, because she grew up on strong Southern, Christian values. Typically, most people believe that being a Christian narrows the point of view of the author. However, it is the opposite for O’Connor’s writing. She believed that being a Christian should widen people’s perspective. For example, in A Good Man is Hard to Find, the grandmother and the Misfits are both symbols of “recipients of grace.” They stand to represent all of the sinners in the world. In the Bible, it is a known fact that God has the power to grant everyone entry to Heaven regardless of what they did in a past. O’Connor is showing that even the most unlikely or undeserving people can be granted forgiveness and peace.
All of O’Connor’s writings are done in a Southern scene with a Christian theme, but they end in tragedy. As Di Renzo stated “her procession of unsavory characters “conjures up, in her own words, “an image of Gothic monstrosities”… (2). Flannery O’Connor was highly criticized for her work as a writer, because of her style of writing, and her use of God. In order to fully understand her work one must research O’Connor and her background to be able to recognize her allegories throughout her stories. Her usage of religious symbols can best be studied by looking into her religious Catholic upbringing. Formalist criticism exists in “A Good Man is Hard to Find” through Flannery O’Connor’s use of plot, characterization, setting, and symbolism.
