The architecture of cathedrals, basilicas and abbey churches is more than a structure at a particular address but actually serves as one transmitter of the Roman Catholic faith. The buildings are characterized by their large scale and follow several traditions, functions and styles that were all established in the Constantinian period. Within the Roman Catholic church, the concepts of place and time have significant roles in the construction and architecture of any catholic church. The buildings, the space, decoration and everything inside and outside a building has meaning; everything is intentionally set up. How and when things get done is determined by time which is composed by a set of calendars and specific hours.
To begin with, the history of Christian church architecture is, obviously, a highly complex one, but it is important that one understands the evolution of the floor plans of Catholic churches to see how the changing shapes of churches reflects an extended analysis of Catholic belief and practice. According to Cunningham, the architecture of a church building was designed in a certain way and it had a certain

These times are Chronos, Kairos, church year, Sartorial Year and Liturgical year. Chronos and kairos are measured times except chronos is our time and kairos is known to be God’s time or the right and opportune moment. The church calendar is a year in the ecclesiastical calendar, used especially in reference to the various feast days and special seasons; the history of the church is told each year. Then, sartorial year gives the times of the masses and the liturgical year which is tied to church year, determines when feast days, including celebrations of saints, are to be observed, and which portions of Scripture are to be read either in an annual cycle or in a cycle of several years. Every season has its own meaning to the Catholic
Thesis: Both St. John the Baptist Cathedral and Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Chartres are constructed in French Gothic style which means that architecturally they have many similarities. However, the 700 year gap between their construction offers St. John the Baptist more flexibility in design and style. Still, their likeness and variations extend far beyond the realm of their design.
The churches are built almost entirely of stone. Built on a symmetrical concept, they both have three portals as an entrance to the nave. Symmetrical towers rise several stories above the left and right portals. It is important for one to recognize that the stone ribbed vaulted ceilings were added on after the
St Peter’s basilica which is built based on rational form of architecture is a Late Renaissance church located within Vatican City, designed by Donato Bramante. Its significant history is that according to the Catholic tradition this was the place that Saint Peter was buried. Not so far away...
Before this council, the way a church building would have been set out was very different. A church built prior to 1962 would have been built as if it were a large cross if you were to look at it from the sky.
I remember attending St. Mary’s open house when I was in fifth grade and instantly knew that it was something special. Unlike most people, I have the unique perspective of going to both a public school and a Catholic school. St. Mary is very different from my old school. Looking back at my time here, I realize that St.Mary is a much better fit for me. It is a better fit socially, academically, and spiritually.
During Early Christian Art evolution of the basilica happened. Old Saint Peter’s Basilica was the greatest Constantinian church. It stood directly over the grave of St. Peter, Old St. Peter served as a building who housed the remains of a holy person. Old St. Peter gave importance to the altar zone with additional function as a martyrium or building who housed the remains of a holy person. Hagia Sophia has the longitudinal axis of an early Christian basilica but the feature of the nave is a huge, square space with an enormous dome above
A calendar of ritual feasts, syncretized with the Roman Catholic calendar, provides the yearly rhythm of religious practice.
“Many people today are calling for modern religion, and specifically Christianity, to be re-imbedded in the cosmos, so that religion might become a real force in providing the ethical and spiritual energy for the critical task of reversing the degradation of the Earth”, (Vincent Rossi 05, p4). The Catholic subculture is one of the oldest subculture I have known seen my childhood. From my personal study from school, the Catholic subculture has a body of organization that devoted their live to serve God. During my interview with Tony Haas, Director of Liturgy, Most Precious Blood Catholic Church, understand that one have to go to school for about four to five years to become a priest. The catholic subculture see them
In class we watched a video about the Nun study, in which researchers study a group of sisters living in the Notre Dame convent in terms of aging. The study started as as one on Alzheimer’s disease, but instead researchers found the key to successful aging as demonstrated by the sisters. Researchers determined that the nuns of the Notre Dame convent were aging better than many elders, they concluded this after the researchers found that although each of the study sisters held the brain functions of one having Alzheimer’s they showed no psychical symptoms of it, such as memory loss. This researcher’s argued was due to a number of factors within the nun’s lives. The factors range from the activity of each of the tested sister’s, to the strong supportive community, to the strong faith that the sister’s held, that led to the pause on the the outward appearance of Alzheimer’s disease.
I would like to write about St. Mark’s Lutheran church, Atchison, Kansas. The history of the church is very unique. My first call was at this church and I also made new history by being the first woman pastor also a person of color.
During Henry VIII and Edward VI’s reign many significant changes were made to church buildings. One church with notable changes is Glastonbury Abbey which still stands today. In this essay I shall explain many changes in church buildings.
The Italian Architects of the seventeenth century faced a huge volume of orders to carry out. The most required orders were churches. (Bazin 15) When Urban VIII became pope he asked Bernini to design a baldachino, also known as a canopy, to define the altar area. Bernini built something that was half sculpture and half architecture that had four columns that were very detailed. The columns were designed with spiraling grooves and vines made of bronze. The spiraling and decorative effects were made to symbolize the union of the new and Old Testaments, the vine of the Eucharist climbing the columns of the temple of Solomon. The Eucharist was the Christian ceremony commemorating the Last Supper. The elements of the Ionic and Corinthian orders are at the top of the columns. Angels are along the entablatu...
The Catholic Church’s corruption during the late Middle Ages further enabled church reforms due to the ever-increasing view of the loss of credibility within the church by both the laity and clergy. Thus implementing the ideas of reform. Martin Luther is considered the father of the reformation where he instigated the challenging for the church, papal authority, and changed how the people were allowed to worship. Carlstadt and Zwingli, much like Luther, practiced Evangelical traditions, however, they expanded further than Luther in regards to doctrine and practice. John Calvin on the other hand challenged some of the Evangelical and Reformed Traditions by various religious changes politically and socially. Lindberg examines the Evangelical
There are several different cultures in the world today. Each culture has its own different traditions and values. One of the world’s most popular cultural differences has to deal with religion. Religion is defined as “an organized system of beliefs, ceremonies, and rules used to worship a god or a group of gods” (Meriam). One popular religion is Roman Catholicism. Being a catholic means different things to different people but it usually revolves around one central theme; doing the right thing according to God. While I am not Catholic, I can certainly understand some of the values and beliefs they have.
Many Christians today know very little if anything about Monasticism. Some probably have never heard of the term before. Monasticism also referred to as monarchism is the act of living alone. It is a religious practice where one fully devotes one’s life to those things that are wholly spiritual.
