Journal #1: Chapters 1-14 The Significance of New York City in “The Catcher in the Rye”. Fifty people, places, and things that are associated with New York are: Times Square, Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, the Twin Towers, Wall Street, Broadway, yellow cabs,the subway, skyscrapers, pizza, Ellis Island, a cup of coffee, Rockefeller Center, Madison Square Garden, Grand Central Station, Yankee Stadium, Coney Island, the Bronx Zoo, Harlem, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, deli’s, Bryant Park, Radio City Music Hall, New York Public Library Alexander Hamilton, rats, Carnegie Hall, George Washington, NYU, the Met, a metrocard, Hip pop, Nicki Minaj, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Jay Z, ice skating, the Apollo Theater, street vendors, and “ Empire State of Mind”.Salinger chose New York City because it is a contradiction just like Holden, it has both the worst and the greatest things in the world. James died because he would rather jump out of the window, then apologize for what he said. Holden views James death as something that truly showed just how brutal the world is, a world where innocence cannot live and where standing up for yourself can lead to your death.
