Color depends on how much of the pigment melanin you have in the color part of your eyes. The more pigment the darker the eye color. The lighter the color is because of the less amount of melanin there is in the iris. Cataracts are the clouding of the lens that prevents light from entering. Double vision, decrease in vision, fuzziness, and blurriness could all be problems when bright light occurs. Causes of cataracts could be from smoking, diabetes and also excessive exposure to light. The function or purpose of the retina is to receive the light that the lens captures, turn the color of the light seen into neuro signals and send those signals to the brain for recognition. small spots that float throughout your vision. Causes of these floaters are due to when we age, protein fibers shrink down little shreds that clump together. People are more than likely to experience these floaters if they are nearsighted. Causes also result from previous eye disease, eye injury or eye tumors. Symptoms of floaters include, black or gray dots being seen, cobwebs, or squigly lines. They don't normally go away, but you can notice these objects overtime. Treatments are almost sometime never medically required. Most doctors recommend to move your eyes by looking up and down. By doing this, it takes away the straining on your eye you are doing trying to focus on the dots. If the floaters are too serious and become an ongoing thing, some eye doctors may recommend a surgery called a vitrectomy, which is the removal of the vitreous and replacement with a salt solution. The myopic condition is common in infants but generally levels off to normal vision as the infant ages (Vander & Gault, 1998). Myopia occurs in about 25% of the adult U.S. population. Many adults use corrective lenses or contacts to correct their myopic vision to 20/20 vision (Drexler et al., 1998). Many people find contacts or glasses hindering in their personal and/or professional lifestyle. For example, military pilots cannot wear glasses while flying and some firemen may find glasses too dangerous to wear during a rescue attempt. The human eye requires both rods and cones for normal vision. Over 100 million rods are located in the periphery of the human eye, and about 6 million cones compose the fovea. Rods, the more sensitive of the two to light, are not able to differentiate wavelengths, thus cannot detect color, and perceive shades of grey, black, and white. Cones, on the other hand, are of three types, containing particular pigments. They are categorized as red, blue, and green depending on to which wavelength they are most sensitive. These cones are what render color vision to humans.
Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in people over the age of 50. Every ten years after the age of 50 the prevalence of this disease increases exponentially. Many different factors contribute to the development of AMD including genetic, environment, and metabolic functions. Aside from smoking, abnormal blood pressure, and an unhealthy diet low in fruits and vegetables, many more studies are concluding that similar inflammatory and oxidative processes seen in other age related diseases are also playing a key role in the development of AMD. This disease affects the central areas of the retina and choroid. In return central vision is impaired while peripheral vision is usually not lost. AMD is seen in two different forms, the earlier nonneovascular (dry) type and the more advanced neovascular (wet) type. Each form has its own specific pathology and unique characteristics that set them apart. Fatty, protein deposits called drusens may be the key risk factor in understanding dry AMD pathology, progression, and treatment. Once the more advanced wet AMD is diagnosed, pathology and treatment are targeted around the formation and destruction of abnormal blood vessels, characteristic of the wet AMD eye. The increasing prevalence of AMD has influenced more investigation into what factors can be modulated to prevent the onset or to stop the progression of AMD. Retinitis pigmentosa is caused by damage to the retina of the eye. The retina is the light sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the eye. The retina focuses images in the brain and then sends them via electrical signals up to the brain. The retina is a very important part of the eye to help a person see. What is affected in the retina from this disorder are the rods in the eye. The rods allow a person to see in the dark. Retinitis pigmentosa slowly causes the rods in the eye to deteriorate over time. Retinitis pigmentosa also can cause the cones in people’s eyes to deteriorate. If a person’s cones deteriorate first, then the person first develops blindness in the center of their eye and they lose some of their color vision. This form of retinitis pigmentosa is much rarer than the form that deteriorates the rods in the eyes.
The retina contains rods and cones. These rods and cones are what distinguish between light and dark. The rods provide black and white vision whilst the cones are responsible to colour vision and fine detail. In newborn children, the fovea, the middle of the retina, does not contain many cones. As the eye is not able to make anymore, the cones move fastest to the fovea in the first 2-3 months of life and enable the new born to see clearer. Robert, a 65 year-old male, has trouble reading fine detail, especially out of his central vision.
