The maritime transport is the backbone of the globalization and the international trade as over of 80%of world merchandise is transported by sea. This infrastructure system is a key to other sectors and business activities like ship manufacturing, fisheries, banking, insurance, transport and tourism. With this great impact a sustainability program should be addressed highlighting relevant issues for sustainable development.
A strategic importance to achieve sustainable maritime transport system is to give a great emphasis of the transportation infrastructure.
The port of Tripoli is projected to become a major hub of trade and shipping in the near future due to the congestion of the port of Beirut.

Antoine Amatoury, Chairman of Gulftainer Company, said: “Large-scale merchants need six to seven months to adapt to using POT. So, we started the shuttle activity to encourage them to use this port.” Shuttle trips are expected to reduce the time needed for a shipment to leave Lebanese ports, especially in light of major traffic at POB. All Customs procedures will be undertaken at the Tripoli port.
In addition Ahmad Tamer, the port manager, estimates Syria's reconstruction will create a demand for 30 million tons of cargo capacity annually.
And Ibrahim Hermes, the CEO of Lebanon's subsidiary of Gulftainer said:"Our aim was to invest here in anticipation of Syria's reconstruction. According to NDTV Profit, the government of India approved two projects to help improve the capacity at Kolkata Port by 23.4 million tonnes (MT) at an expenditure of Rs 1,707 crore. The projects will allow Kolkata Port Trust to enhance its capacity by 23.4 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) and meet the demand for coal and other bulk cargo in the hinterland of Kolkata Port. The two projects will help meet the future needs for import and export of dry bulk cargo by various steel industries, power utilities and coal and iron ore mines and other local industries. Also, it will help lead to socio-economic development and creating more job opportunities.
