In 2013 it handled 135 million tonnes of cargo; 95 percent of total volume from the Port serves Canadian imports and export markets.
Kolkata Port Trust
From Port Metro Vancouver to Kolkata Port Trust which is located to be about 126 miles from the sea. It is a port constructed by the British East India Company and is one of the oldest ports in India. The port has two dock systems which are Kolkata Dock System located at Kolkata with the oil wharves at Baj Baj. Improvements to Kolkata Trust Port
According to NDTV Profit, the government of India approved two projects to help improve the capacity at Kolkata Port by 23.4 million tonnes (MT) at an expenditure of Rs 1,707 crore. The projects will allow Kolkata Port Trust to enhance its capacity by 23.4 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) and meet the demand for coal and other bulk cargo in the hinterland of Kolkata Port. The two projects will help meet the future needs for import and export of dry bulk cargo by various steel industries, power utilities and coal and iron ore mines and other local industries. Also, it will help lead to socio-economic development and creating more job opportunities.
