Presenting problem/Description of Client: Dr. Shaun Murphy is a 25-year-old, Caucasian male. Dr. Murphy has Autism and Savant syndrome. He believes his condition has a positive affect on him because he is able to think and understand in a way that his colleagues cannot. Having this form of disorder and syndrome allows him to have an “almost perfect recall.” By that, I mean he is able to visualize certain images without actually having to look at them on the spot and make highly accurate diagnosis. He does not like being questioned and he is very blunt when it comes to telling his coworkers and peers about their wrongdoings and mistakes.
Treatment History/Medications: When he was six years old, he started doing Sensory Integration Therapy.

Dr. Shaun Murphy is very open about having autism. He often discusses with some of the clients how autism helps him to be a good surgical resident, as well as some of the struggles that he has faced. Many people who go into the emergency room is often faced with fear due to their injuries or life traumatic events, however, he manages to help clients to feel comfortable and special by the time they leave. From my perspective, autism is affect Dr. Murphy in more of a positive way than a negative way. Although he may have more good days, he is still faced with some days where he is extremely down. When he feels he is in a difficult situation, he misses work because he does not know how to handle the situation. Dr. Murphy is wanting help to manage how he reacts to those bad days or being in difficult …show more content…
Murphy has a less severe form of autism. By that I mean, he is able to live independently and do most things on his own. Although he is able live independently and function very well, he still needs a little help at times. Many of Dr. Murphy’s colleagues believe that he can come off as a little blunt or too forward at times. For example, when he has a patient with a “surgery or death situation” and the patient chooses not to have surgery, he becomes upset with the client and tells them they will die without explaining it in a more sympathetic manner. When something is not done in the way he expects, he must play with his toy scalpel to keep from exploding or walking out on his job. He understands that he may need some form of therapy or medication to help him have a better reaction and to allow him to better cope with situations that are not pleasing to him. He experiences repetitive motor movements, hyperactivity, often becomes fixated on certain objects, and insist on the same routines every day. These are all signs to prove that Dr. Murphy has Level 1
March 30, 1981 was a peaceful day. President Ronald Reagan was walking outside enjoying the fresh air when suddenly shots were fired. Six shots were fired in total, but only one shot hit Reagan due to a bullet that ricocheted. Luckily, Reagan was hit in the abdomen; therefore, he survived. The “mastermind” behind the attempted assassination was a man named John Hinckley. Hinckley believed by going through with this assassination it would be a romantic scenario for himself to confess his undying love for the actress Jodie Foster. Before long it was time for the Hinckley trial and after hearing his side of the story, the jury came to the conclusion that he was crazy. Hinckley was later found not guilty by reason of insanity and admitted to
This module of study has focused on many aspects of human health, anatomy, and the disease process. It has included such topics as the human organ systems, the mechanism of disease and the resulting disruption of homeostasis, the integumentary system, and the musculoskeletal system. The following case studies explore how burn classification will affect treatment, how joint injuries can disrupt mobility, and last, how a sedentary lifestyle can contribute to a decline in a person’s health status. The importance of understanding disease and knowing when to seek treatment is the first step toward enjoying a balanced and healthy life.
Grady Memorial Hospital, also simply known as Grady, is the public hospital for the city of Atlanta. It was found in 1892 and is one the largest hospitals in the state of Georgia. Grady has become known for its amazing trauma service. As the hospital website notes, they are the region’s premier level I trauma center (Grady, 2016). While Grady excels at taking care of the critically injured, it still has areas that need some work.
ASD individuals may find it hard to communicate and socialize with others around them. However, because each child is unique, they have their own unique abilities and ways of responding to new experiences. Other issues children with ASD have include; anxiety, sleeping problems, and learning disabilities. Those who are diagnosed with ASD or any other disability are usually judged and bullied. In the documentary Violet’s mother says she is afraid of her child being labeled and underestimated because she is diagnosed with autism. A child’s disability can also affect their family members. Family members may have a difficult time understanding and getting to know the autistic child in order to provide for them. They struggle to find interventions such as treatment and therapy for them, the right medical care, and trying learn to cope with all this. At times parents and caregivers can also feel stressed or irritated knowing they have to fulfill all of the child’s needs. Siblings on the other hand, may find it unfair that the autistic child gets the most attention and
Refrain from asking many questions during recall. The client can only devote attention to so many ideas at once, so repeated suggestions from the clinician can confuse retrieval and even interfere with former memories due to retroactive interference
It is most often characterized by difficulty in the child's ability to respond to people, events, and objects. Responses to sensations of light, sound, and feeling may be exaggerated. Delayed speech and language may be associated. Other characteristics include: impairment in ability to make peer friendships, absence of imaginative activity, stereotyped body movements, persistent preoccupation with parts of objects, marked distress over changes in trivial aspects of the environment, unreasonable insistence on following routines in precise detail, a restricted range of interests and a preoccupation with one narrow interest, along with many others.
Every year doctors diagnose thousands of adults and children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Due to the growing awareness of autism and recent developments in technology, scientists and doctors can now discover and observe the effects of autism on society, and people. Starting with its discovery, researchers have been able to diagnose people more effectively. Doctors are beginning to discover what causes this disorder, and are currently trying to find ways to prevent and treat it. Many places have opened their doors to people with this disorder, creating autistic friendly environments where people are patient and understanding. Schools have also become accommodating to autistic children and adults. Autism also puts great strain on family and home lives.
“If you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism,” Dr. Stephen Shore. I believe this is a powerful quote that truly defines autism and those who have to experience it every day. People who have autism are often stigmatized that they are not like everyone else. This negative image can be blamed on how TV and media represent those with this disorder, according to Douwe. This idea first begs the question, what is normal? In today’s society, people are trying to be like everyone else if this means wearing the same clothes or acting the same as everyone else just to avoid attention. Well, autistic people are not able to hide behind this false curtain. What disadvantages they have is not something they can change, but rather
Autism is something to embrace, not conquer” (211). But sometimes the message of hope. love, and struggle can best be understood from the lips of a child. In an article written by nine-year-old Joey Cariello, he simply stated: “I try to be the best brother I can. (I like him just the way he is even though he has autism)”
Autism has been misjudged for many years and some people have gone without treatment and were locked up in mental hospitals for the rest of their lives due to the ignorance of the public... The main problem is that there has not been any productive treatment available to help them in the past. The typical case of autism can be frightening to those who are not educated in the characteristics on how one can be affected by autism and its symptoms. It would be easy to be intimidated and overwhelmed by the reactions of people that have autism. There are several ways to diagnose autism, however it is in many cases not being recognized, and especially in children who have debilitating handicaps such as schizophrenia. There are also the children that may seem very normal and may only have a few symptoms, such as rocking or not being able to
Autism is a problem that people have with communicating. It can affect many contrasting types of people in divergent ways and there is not yet a complete cure for it. People need to know about this disability and what people can do with people who have it.
Two to six children out of every thousand will end up with Autism. Autism is one of the fastest growing disorders with a great amount of studies being put behind it. Mayo Clinic is a hospital that is as well-known by many to be a haven of caring and concerned doctors whos’ sole focus is to give their patients the type of care they would want their families to receive if they were patients. According to Colquitt, LePine, and Wesson (Mayo Case Study, 2014), Mayo Clinic has established a customer service, patient first culture that puts the needs of those whom they serve ahead of other focuses, such as profit or patient quotas. This corporate culture has lead the hospital to become one of the most successful and iconic medical centers in the United States. Colquitt, LePine, and Wesson (Mayo Case Study, 2014) propose several very interesting questions at the end of the reading that they ask readers to ponder.
Dave Armstrong is about to graduate from Harvard Business School and is facing three career options. The decision problem that Armstrong should be considering is not which of these three jobs should he take, but rather what job will satiate his career goals. By asking this, Armstrong can gain a complete perspective of his options instead of being confined to three career options that may not be in his best interests. His objectives are not clearly outlined in the case; however, we can infer from the manner in which he is describing the jobs that he would like to have ownership in a company, enjoys thrilling non-office jobs, and wants to grow his network. Also, he has to take into consideration his wife’s objectives for him of having a job
