“They’re all gonna laugh at you” (Palma). This quote from the film, Carrie, based on the story by Stephen King, perfectly summarizes the humiliation that the main character, Carrie White, faced. Carrie was Stephen King’s first ever novel, which drove him on his road to success. Stephen King was born on September 21, 1947. He set the book in Chamberlain, Maine, in 1979. This was set in the future at the time, because the book was released in 1974. Stephen King grew up in Portland, Maine, so he knew how the dynamic of a town in Maine worked. Stephen King’s Carrie shows postmodernism writing with its mixed-up storytelling, multiple blended genres, and uncertain truth. Stephen King’s novel reflects the powerful change in culture from the repressive and conforming 1950’s to the vibrant and …show more content…
In Carrie, the characters laugh and make fun of Carrie just because everyone else is. The only person to really stand up for her is Sue Snell. In both stories, the characters follow their alpha leaders, Abigail and Chris. One of Carrie’s strengths is her resilience. Despite her constant torment and abuse from bullies and her mother, she continues to survive. She refuses to be broken. One example of this is when she continues to walk and terrorize the town after being stabbed by her mother. One of Carrie’s weaknesses was her religious and restrictive upbringing. It caused her a lot of harm. She was made fun of and bullied pretty much her whole life because of how her mother raised her. It also caused her to be brainwashed, lack social skills, depend on her mother, lack self worth, and be emotionally immature. "Her life had been one long succession of slights and hurts, one after another after another, all delivered by the rain of chance alone” (King 54). A good theme for the novel Carrie by Stephen King is that the effects of bullying, isolation, and repressed emotions unfold in a story of tragic
Every person has different personalities that they develop during different stages in life. Many personalities start with parents and how they educate their children. That is the basis of who someone is. Once you get older you start to finally try and figure out who you are. High school can be either the best or the worst place to figure it out. High school is usually thought of a new scary place when starting freshmen year. There are kids who will be older and you will meet different types of people that you might have never met before. The way parents treat their kids can affect their school life. Meaning that if student’s lives at home are not good living conditions that can cause a gap between other students at school. The movie Carrie made in 1976, Carrie was bullied at school but also in way by the hands of her mother who also bullied her at home.
In the exposition of the story, Minus immediately delves into the characters, introducing us to both and young Carrie Johnson and Mrs. Cado P. Clark, the main characters in the story. She also gives us a physical description of Carrie, as well as a beginning presentation of Mrs. Clark’s character. Of Carrie, Minus writes, “…Carrie had come out of the South, the red clay clinging to her misshapen heels, made migrant by the disintegration of a crumbling age” also “Carrie’s wide brown nostrils...”(Girl, Colored 1940). Of Mrs. Clark’s character as person from the upper class; she writes “A pale blonde woman opened the door. Wisps of inoffensive hair strayed from the leather thongs of a dozen curlers set at variance on her head.”Minus instantly offers a feel for how each character will shape up to be, and presents a chance for us (the reader) to attach ourselves to these perhaps not-so-unique individuals. Without further ado, Minus expounds on her both her characters initial descriptions of throughout the remainder of the story. We learn that Carrie has a quick temper and she easily angered but manages to keep of her emotions under control, Mrs. Clark ha...
Many people think that reading more can help them to think and develop before writing something. Others might think that they don’t need to read and or write that it can really help them to brainstorm things a lot quicker and to develop their own ideas immediately (right away). The author’s purpose of Stephen King’s essay, Reading to Write, is to understand the concepts, strategies and understandings of how to always read first and then start something. The importance of this essay is to understand and comprehend our reading and writing skills by brainstorming our ideas and thoughts a lot quicker. In other words, we must always try to read first before we can brainstorm some ideas and to think before we write something. There are many reasons why I chose Stephen King’s essay, Reading to Write, by many ways that reading can help you to comprehend, writing, can help you to evaluate and summarize things after reading a passage, if you read, it can help you to write things better and as you read, it can help you to think and evaluate of what to write about.
In 1974 a book was published, there have been over 4 million copies of this book sold. This book is even in our school library! Guess what book this is. It’s Carrie by Stephen King! Stephen’s first book in fact was Carrie, but lets get a little more into the author before we get into that.
Most book reviews of Stephen King's 1974 novel, Carrie, were generally positive. With Steve Calvert's review, he focuses on the structure of Carrie. These reviews differed in minor ways but overall the reviewers admire Stephen King's work and enjoyed the story of Carrie White.
King describes Carrie as being "a frog among swans" (4) in relation to the other girls at school. Carrie is not attractive. She is a girl of sixteen with pale skin. She has short and colorless flat blonde hair. She is chubby at the waist and has a lot of pimples on her face and back. Physically, Carrie has a lot of flaws. At school, Carrie is made fun of on a daily basis. She is an outcast and teased by cruel bullies and by the other popular classmates. She is at the bottom of the social pyramid. She is considered the target of humiliation. "Carrie white eats shit" (King 4) is written on a desk in the school to give an example of Carrie's
Carrie, by Stephen King, and the Columbine High School Incident; looked at separately, they are to things that have nothing to do with each other. Carrie was Stephen King’s first major novel and a New York Times bestseller. Columbine was and incident in Colorado that happened in 1999, where two high school seniors orchestrated a bloody massacre at their high school. The two events occurred over twenty-five years apart, but when juxtaposed we can see many similarities between the book ant the incident, the fact that they are gothic in nature in particular.
A zombie is a monster that has been a horror movie legacy for many years now. Zombie is defined as “a dead person who is able to move because of magic according to some religions and in stories, movies, etc.” Zombies haven’t always been the creature that we see today though. George A. Romero merged the old-forgotten zombie into the standardized version we see today. James Conroy writes, “With his 1968 film Night of the Living Dead, George Romero brought the concept of the slow-moving, flesh-eating zombie into mainstream American culture.” (1) Night of the Living Dead not only set an iconic image for zombies, but it also brought issues you would not normally see in a Zombie film, dealing with race and gender stereotypes.
Ever felt misunderstood or often felt misconceived? In the book Carrie, Stephen King writes about a young teenage girl named Carrie White who was constantly ridiculed and made fun for being different throughout her life by her peers. The rejection she experienced by them along with the abuse of her aggressively religious mother often led to paranormal circumstances, triggered by her TK (telekinesis). This eventually led to the death of hundreds, including her mother, peers and herself. Some people may think that Carrie was the spawn of satan, as her mother put it. Then again, others might say that she was just a normal, unpopular, misconceived
Characterization: this incident shows Carries true self. After her sister lends her an umbrella that isn’t too appealing, Carrie goes out and spends over a $1.50 on a new one ($1.50 was big money back then), and it’s now clear to see she cares too much about appearance.
There are a lot of people who either wonder or believe that violent media is bad for people and mostly children. Not all violent media is bad. Sometimes when people have a stressful day they will play video games to let off steam. A few people like watching horror movies because of the thrill of being scared. But if you’re a kid with no friends or you are alone most of the time, you might enjoy comic books. They are filled with action and heroes. Doing any of these can give off a sense of adventure, thrill, and excitement. It doesn’t mean that you’re going to go off and start hurting people because of it. There is a lot of evidence that states the media affects viewers by encouraging violent behavior and weakening their creative ability. The question is whether the media is truly the problem, or is it the parental role that is the problem.
When most people think of a “slasher film” (Clover 1992) they tend to think of movies such as Friday the 13th, Halloween, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. These movies align with the basic necessities for a slasher film ,but at the same time, are repetitive. In 1984 A Nightmare on Elm Street was created and completely changed what was looked at as a “slasher villain”. In A Nightmare on Elm Street the viewer is introduced the evil omnipresent being known as Freddy Krueger. Freddy Krueger is a nightmareous malicious monster whose only purpose is to kill. He is the embodiment of fear and evil with immense power and abilities that some would dub as “Godlike.” In James Kendrick’s Razors in the Dreamscape: Revisiting A Nightmare on Elm Street and the Slasher Film Kendrick discusses A Nightmare on Elm Street’s originality as compared to other slasher films such as Friday the 13th, Halloween, etc. Kendrick presents an understanding of how A Nightmare on Elm Street fights common archetypes and tropes associated with the slasher genre by discussing the amalgamation of Krueger and his victims and how it ultimately emasculates Krueger and leads to his demise.
You know I like the word geek because you can fit it to any other word and make it sound cool. It doesn’t mean that “I love reading” sounds lame. But when you present yourself as a reading geek it certainly takes you to another level. So, as you’ve already got it, I am a true reading geek.
When she tries to find a job, she is scared. Carrie has no skills to offer an employer, no job experience, and her clothing was of poor quality. Chicago was a large city, but society at that time did not have many job opportunities for working women. The only jobs that Carrie could possibly get were in the factories that, paid low wages, had poor working conditions, and long hours. She knew that after she paid rent to her brother-in-law, she would have very little left to buy all the beautiful things that she longed for. When Carrie took the job at the shoe factory, she did not like the hard work and considered the other women who worked there to be common. When winter arrived, Carrie got sick and stayed home from work which caused her to lose her job.
