Being determined is the key to survival because the determination is what pushes a person to strive forward and persevere. A person having determination is at the base of a pyramid on the key for survival because you cannot succeed in any goal without being determined. For example, a person who is good at something is good at that thing because they were determined to learn to do it. Many articles and stories such as Caroline Alexander’s “The Voyage of the James Caird”, Grayson Schaffer’s “The Value of a Sherpa Life”, The Writer by Richard Wilbur, and Hugging the Jukebox by Naomi Shihab Nye prove these statements.
In Caroline Alexander’s, “The Voyage of the James Caird”, the voyagers on the James Caird were determined to not give up after all

The Writer is about the daughter of an author working on her story. The author passes by her room listening to her type. As he does this, he recalls the difficulties of writing a story. As the father passes by his daughter while she is writing, he states, “I wish her a lucky passage. But now it is she who pauses. As if to reject my thought and its easy figure” (Wilbur, 9-11). This scene shows how the father is determined that his daughter will write successfully. This is shown through his wish for his daughter. What this scene shows you is that even family who understands a certain feeling someone else in the family is getting will feel it for that person. These moments where someone feels for another person makes those that know someone that feels for them, …show more content…
This little boy is in love with his grandparent's jukebox and rarely release it. This boy is an amazing singer. It is unknown where he got this gift from because no one else in his family is able to sing like he does. After the grandparents are done watching the boy for the day, “They’ve tried putting him to bed, but he sings in bed” (Nye, 29). This scene shows that when you love something you don’t give it up. This boy’s determination to not give up is shown as he sings in bed. What this scene shows is that even small children will not let go of things if they are determined to not give up. These moments in the story make people want to continue doing what they love, and not letting go of
Important goals about life have changed significantly suggests Kohn. With goals comes the ability to be persistent, the author mentions. He describes that persistence is one characteristic among many that could become valuable when wanting to reach a goal,

However, determination is the will and power that an individual holds within them in order to strive for what they’ve always wished to accomplish in their life. In addition, determination is to simply not give up no matter how many times a person falls. It’s getting back up and working through your uphill battles. In the novel, Santiago showed determination when he got his money robbed in Tangier by an individual whom he trusted and thought was once his friend. Therefore, part of Santiago wanted to end his journey and go back to being a shepherd in Spain but the other part of him wanted to continue to fulfill his dream and find his treasure that lies at the pyramids of Egypt. Pursuing this further, while having the strength of determination Santiago chose to continue his journey, and work his hardest with the drive to push through difficult times, reaching for his goal. The author states, “But all this happened for one basic reason: no matter how many detours and adjustments it made, the caravan moved toward the same compass point. Once obstacles were overcome, it returned to its course, sighting on a star that indicated the location of the oasis.” Furthermore, this teaches the reader that people will always encounter obstacles and detours, but once an individual perseveres through it with determination, those individuals continue back on track with the drive to achieve their
As the audience already knows that there are many tales that are told in the story. These stories are the base for what has to come later in the sections. These stories have lessons and hidden meanings that will show through the mothers and daughters. For example, the first part of the book is “Feathers from a Thousand Li Away” is intended to teach the reader about hope, which is symbolized by the swan. One of the mothers in the story has a feather from the swan and in hopes, one day give it to her daughter and tell her the struggles that the family had to go through to have a better life. This wish is a very difficult one to come true because of a
“ I am a slow walker but I never walk back.” Sometimes it takes time but you always want to get to the end. Even if things get in your way or something is hard, you never give up and you keep pushing forward. In my opinion, perseverance is an excessively essential trait to have in the case of survival. Shackleton needed to get out of the Ice to survive, he canoed for a severely long amount of time. It was very tiring and even so Shackleton didn’t give up. In the book Hatchet Brian needed a fire to survive. He kept trying but nothing seemed to be working, he never gave up and he just kept going.
As part of an ever-developing endeavor to truly grasp Christopher Columbus, his character and his mission, it is crucial to find sources that lend an accurate portrayal and in-depth evaluation of his true disposition, his ambitious intentions, and the outcome of his success or failures in regards to those. To grasp the ensuing reverberations felt profoundly throughout the centuries due to his exploits, and the collateral damage caused thereby, one must first trace him back to his origins; and in so doing, follow him along through his quest for notoriety, power, wealth, and prestige. Columbus: the four voyages, by Laurence Bergreen, does all that and more.
The entire story was a symbol of Needy’s life. The setting in the story was symbolic to the way Needy was feeling. Needy’s life was diminishing right before his eyes, and he did not realize it. The different changes in the story represented how much Needy’s life had gradually changed over time. By reading the story the reader can tell that Needy was in a state of denial.
Determination is “The act or an instance of making an important decision and not giving up” (“Determination”). In The Great Gatsby, the main character Jay Gatsby is a succesful business man who will go to extremes to win the heart of the woman of his dreams, Daisy, hoping she would leave her husband for him. Gatsby threw extravagant parties with an abundance of alcohol and a variety of people. People would drive hundreds of miles to attend one of Jay Gatsby’s parties. He would never participate in any of his parties, however, so no one knew him. One may ask: Why would he spend so much money on parties he did not even participate in? The answer is that he would stand on the balcony looking over his unknown party guests hoping Daisy would show up one evening. Gatsby was very determined to get the attention of Daisy, and he believed by throwing these parties he would do so. He was so anxious to see her; he had his neighbor Nick invite her over one afternoon. He had been very nervous and wanted eve...
In “The Author to her Book,” the book was about an unpleasing child whom she had worked so hard to improve. She tells her child not to fall into the wrong hands but to explain that her mother has had to turn her out of poverty; “rambling brat.” This metaphor is used in explaining the mockery tone that she uses when referring to her work. She reminds her fellow readers that only few women or parents would care to be held responsible for their offspring. Her children are mostly her true subjects in all of her writings. Her family poems avoid sentiments though but she loves her husband and children more than any other thing in the world. She addresses death in “Before the Birth of One of her Children” which was directed to her husband and shows the fear of being a housewife where every pregnancy was like a preamble to death. Her other poems are in memory of her grandchildren who died while they were still very young. Her feelings in these poems is repressed and her attitude is like surrendering to God’s will but she was always pained at every death situation which is not surprising as she has to mourn her lost loved ones. She designated two poems to her husband when he was away for business. She argues that her love is above a female deer whose mate is absent. In the first letter to her husband, she uses the sun to express her true feelings for him; “I wish my sun may never set, but burn.”
demonstrates how the characters of the book are reckless and view love as something that can
The author, Katherine Mansfield, begins the story by introducing a simple- minded woman who is suffering from her loneliness, which is a reason why she eavesdrops into stranger’s life experiences. Miss. Brill’s life story is told to reveal how she attempts reflect her life with another stranger’s life, however it does mirrors Mrs. Brill’s life. On Sunday’s, Miss. Brill goes to the park and examines the details of her surroundings. Though the weather is call for it, she dresses in fur clothing, representing her personality. There was an old couple seating by her at a bench, and she is dissatisfied that they are not talking since she enjoys eavesdropping on their conversation. Her attention changes at the park when she notices a young girl trying to desperately get a man’s attention, but the young girl fails. Even though the girl seemed happy and hastily to progress, Mrs. Brill gives her attention to the sad music that is playing in the background. She believes to be more into the young girl’s emotions rather than the couple and their life conversations. Miss. Brill believes that she is an inspiration to everyone, and she and everyone else is a production of her life, but she is the main character. She believes to be the queen of this imaginary production, and she rules everything and everyone. As the music resumes, she moves away from the girl by a changing tune, which she is not able to comprehend. She is then joined by a young couple, who she believes is the star of her imaginary production. She over hears the young couple talking about her, so she leaves the park and immediately goes home and when she gets there she hears crying. The author, Kathrine Mansfield, demonstrates the central idea by using Miss Brill as a message of is...
There is freedom from idealization and rationality as the boy sings along with the sounds of the universe. Emotion is held above reason and the senses over intellect. “Listen to the pretty sounds of music... beneath the sun.” The boy hears the noises of the earth and feels the warmth of the sun and isn’t concerned with much more than the peace he has found.
Determination is a quality that makes a person continue to try, to do, or to achieve something that is difficult. It is a person’s overall drive to never give up and continue striving towards a desired goal. If I was asked to describe myself in one word, I would choose determined. Throughout my life I have had many experiences where my determination has helped me fight through tough times. By having this quality it has helped me to win a girls bowling IHSA state title, be an all-state athlete, and also continue my goals for my education. Determination is important to me because I need it to achieve my goals and reach my highest potential. Determination starts with the decision to go for the goal and to make the commitment to attain the goal. Determination is also the continuous driving force to overcome the obstacles on the way to the destination. It focuses the mind on the end result. It strengthens the will to carry on, to arrive at the destination.
His poetry is written in a natural language that speaks to and demonstrates common human emotions; called forth by readers' experiences in nature. He explains how nature has never betrayed his heart, and that is why he has lived a life full of joy. Therefore, he wishes her sister to indulge in the nature and be a part of it. That way, she will be able to enjoy and understand life and conquer the displeasure of living in a cruel human society.
A determination is a driving force that helps people through rough times in their lives. Without determination, people would no longer strive for their goals. Throughout the short story, ‘Then Later, His Ghost,’ Sarah Hall shows how strength and determination can get you through these tough times. This theme is made clear through the severe setting the characters are faced with and her use of symbolism.
