Carly and her boyfriend of six months, Marc, recently got into a large argument because Marc prioritized his friends over Carly, when they only see each other around once a week. Carly must make a decision about whether they should separate, or if they should try and salvage their relationship. For the benefit of her current and future relationships, Carly must see that her differences with Marc are creating an unhealthy relationship dynamic. However, Carly’s relationship can be salvaged by deciding her priorities and working towards healthier methods of communication with Marc. In order to ensure that she will have a healthy relationship, Carly must decide what her priorities are. According to source A, she is focusing more on basketball and …show more content…
Source H supports my argument that Carly needs to figure out what she should be focusing on by connecting with Source A. This displays her busy schedule, while H shows that she still cares for Marc because she is taking him on an expensive date, although the allotted time for him is brief at best. The Melting Pot is a very expensive restaurant where the two will have their date on Friday, and looking at Marc and Carly’s schedule, Marc has an undefined amount of time to spend with her, while Carly has plans right after their date. Inspecting further, Carly has a full schedule, with only one date with Marc, which shows that he is not a very large, if at all, priority in her life. After considering her priorities, Carly must establish better methods of communication to improve their relationship if it is to last. Carly and Marc must communicate more effectively in order to have a long-lasting, healthy …show more content…
Ignoring her boyfriend is a terrible method of communication, because even if no words are spoken, the message is still there, which is that she does not want to talk to him. In no way will that benefit their relationship, rather, it may break it. This method of conveying her feelings is partially what is breaking their relationship, which is proved in source B where Marc misunderstands Carly’s friendship with John as infidelity. It is evident that Marc and Carly have terrible ways of communicating their feelings, as a lack of communication and saying things through anger are bound to cause misunderstandings, creating an even worse relationship dynamic, where one of them is mad and the other must guess what they did wrong. Misunderstandings seem to be a common occurrence in this relationship, with Marc blindly believing his other friend that Carly is cheating on him. In source B, Marc is shown saying that he may break up with Carly, but at that point in time, he had not confronted Carly, nor even questioned her fidelity. Marc instantly assumed that his friend was correct, and instead of confronting Carly or searching for any evidence, he remained
Roxanne faces a relationship crisis with her fiance since he wants to receive a scholarship and play college ball in another city. Roxanne had no past experience and Roberta suggests her to “try not to get too worked up about [the issue] … [because] [she] [will] get it straightened out” (32) eventually. Roberta enlightens Roxanne about the uncertainty in life and that one should make their own decisions. Thus, Roxanne also gains from Roberta’s advice.
Although they seem to be arguing about something trivial like lemons, there are much bigger issues that begin to surface. Throughout this paper, I will show how this scene is a perfect display of how a combination of passive aggressive behavior, disconfirming messages, and a defensive and unsupportive communication climate led to a complete breakdown of this couple’s relationship. They both throw in all different types of issues and past arguments that have never been resolved. Brooke attacks Gary for never taking her to the ballet, for playing too many video games, and for the lack of novelty in their relationship.

Caitlin has been asking her new boyfriend Rogerson questions about his family and friends, something a typical date might consist of. Rogerson however, is not a typical boyfriend. He told her that she asks a lot of questions, which angered Caitlin. She felt ignored on the date, while he talked to his friends and rarely introduced her. She admits later that, " it's not like I want sparkling conversation I just wondered why you asked me out tonight, if you didn't really want me here.'" (77) For this moment she stands up for herself, not accepting his accusations as a conclusion to her pressure for conversation.
The relationship is awkward because neither John nor Elizabeth know how to talk to each other. Elizabeth is still suspicious of John. She says,
Even when examining Anna’s early relationship with Jeff, when she arranges for him to come up on weekends with Chuck. He protests saying, “Jesus, I don’t even know the guy…why didn’t you call me first” (Wallace, 315). Her insecurity about whether or not Jeff would come up on weekends without this convenience allowed for a lack of communication of feelings between Jeff and Anna. However, of more importance is Anna’s lack of communication with Peter. A large part of what makes Anna herself is her ability and love of creating stories. When her husband does not share this, Anna finds this challenging, and lets it become a barrier for communication. “His face set in the pained expression he wears for conversations like this – “What ifs” speculations. When Jennifer and I sit in a restaurant making up stories about the people around us, he closes his eyes, just as he’s doing now” (Wallace, 317). Peters almost dismissal through the closing his eyes of Anna’s love for story making allows for a distancing and ultimately a deep seeded feeling of isolation and
George says, “Annie, you didn’t know what was done to that man. You don’t know what happened” (46). Truth about Joe’s faulty part is an inevitable truth that could take Ann away from Chris. Another truth that causes Chris to nearly lose Ann is Kate accidentally saying the truth about Joe’s health. It causes George to go mad and attempt to take Ann again. Also, Sue tells Ann about the Keller’s dark truth and this makes Ann hesitate about Chris for a moment. The truth that should resolve life’s conflict is creating more conflict, like how Chris nearly lose Ann and how he lose his relationship with his family later on.

Through the communication that occurred within the relationship of Tom and Summer, it is apparent that misinterpretations of nonverbal communication and the styles of managing conflict ultimately led them to their relationship’s demise.
“As with other stories by Irwin Shaw, this one touches on the theme of lost or disappearing youth” (Archer 2). Frances is afraid that she will lose all relationships in life if she loses Michael, even with her friends that live in the country. Frances chooses to spend the whole day with Michael instead of visiting her friends, because she thinks the time alone will give them a chance to save their relationship. With Frances being so insecure, it confirms that everyone needs a relationship to feel belonging in their life.
