To be honest, I have read many foreign novels in the past 20 years including some “cancer books” or illness and dying books, such as the book we read this semester called “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian”. But now I have to acknowledge that this book, Me Earl and the Dying Girl, is the sincerest and funniest among the “cancer book” that I have read. In general, this kind of book attends to leave the readers with message about life or death so as to humanize them in a warmhearted and serious way. But in this book, I do not see not many very affecting fragments about illness or death; instead, it gives me a new kind of feelings, that is, teenager’s honest inner word. The entire story develops around making movie. Greg Gaines was a senior at Benson High school in lovely inner-city Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. He is “spy” and can shuttle his way through different groups in his sock school. He belongs to every group but he does not belong to any groups either. He associates with all kind of people in school, but he has only one truth friend, Earl. Greg and Earl spend most of their time to each other. They like movies and they make movie together, especially after they watching Greg’s father’s videos. But they don’t make for others, instead the girl called Rachel who has leukemia. Greg’s mother is involved in Greg’s education more often and she forces Greg to be friend with Rachel. Greg must obey to his mother’s idea though he is not willing to. He calls her up and goes to her home to visit her. Greg talks to Rachel, tries his best to go into Rachel’s mind and cheers her up. To begin with, Rachel and Greg are awkward, but then they develop into more natural, even from a kind of relationship that both of th... ... middle of paper ... ...hing I want to report about this book is youth education. The school environment the author present is shocked to me: too many groups and “combat” among them, just as Greg said” how it is possible to exist in a place that socks so bad”! In addition, I don’t think it is a good way for youth that parents are involved too much in teenagers’ world. Just like Greg’s mother forces him to do things that Greg is not willing to do, even eavesdrops on Greg and Rachel outside the door. Also, there is a lot of dirty talking in this book, which I think it is bad for the growth of teenagers. With all of that being said, if you're looking for something refreshing and new to the 'cancer book world', I suggest you read Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. You'll be sure to enjoy the protagonist’s honest and humor, the different side of emotions. I think it is well worth reading.
Workers who work with adolescents and, especially, parents would enjoy this book since it would bring understanding and the reader could personally relate to the author. As the author evidently strives to effectively raise adults, parents likewise strive. In this endeavor, since this book provided a history of the adolescent’s culture, the current state of the adolescent’s culture, relational qualities to implement while approaching teenagers, and how to practical respond to teenagers’ issues. Overall, this is a beneficial
To Live is both controversial and impactful in a cultural sense and the character development respectively. The author thoughtfully addresses the motif death throughout the novel and demonstrates how the motif affects the protagonist, Fugui’s character development. The moment when Long Er is executed in his presence changes his character and allows him to realize how fortunate he is to be alive, changes his outlook in life, and impacts the way he sees life at the end of the novel in contrast to the beginning of the novel.
...e and the process how a disorderly student comes back to a good student by setting good time setting, mood, and background, setting appropriate narrative point of view, and having a good title to show the writer’s intention to readers. The author wants to talk about what the contemporary teenagers are doing, thinking, and growing. She also deals with the teenagers’ problems such as bullying, drugs, alcohol, and juvenile delinquent by connecting them in the book. It was pretty successful to reveal her intention, but the author could have led the first half of the story more in intense atmosphere which would make readers think they want to read the book more. However, this novel is well-written which shows a lot of hidden aspects of teenagers, and the teenagers would feel empathy while reading this book, therefore, this book is surely recommendable to the teenagers.
...ersonally, I fell in love with the book. Ray Bradbury has a more unique style in writing than most authors. I believe it is a very appropriate book for high school and I would recommend it to everyone. I think anyone and everyone can connect someway to the main themes of the novel. Everyone has or will undergo a stage in life where they don’t feel accepted. Then it is up to that person to chose how they decided to take it. In the book some characters decided to fight the evil and found themselves doing so. People get so caught up in what people think when really they should just accept themselves, “Accept everything about yourself -- I mean everything, you are you and that is the beginning and the end -- no apologies, no regrets” (Clark Moustakas). This book could show that no matter the age or who you are anything is possible and not even the sky is the limit.
I enjoyed how the book was written. I liked how the narrator makes me wonder how girls can be attracted to men that they do not even know. In my opinion, some point of this novel is very interesting but some points are too disturbing by the sexual teenage. The narrator provide the consideration point to the teenagers that the relationship between the boys and the girls do not important as much as the relationship between friends. In the Jailbait, Andi’s friends always ask her about her life and even consider her life more than her boyfriend. This makes me think about some people do not care about their friends, but when they get in trouble, friends are always there. Friends always talk to you, hug you, and make you do not feel lonely, whereas, the relationship of boys and girls can break up whenever two people are not understand or just feel bored with each
After hearing a brief description of the story you might think that there aren’t many good things about they story. However, this is false, there are many good things in this book that makes it a good read. First being that it is a very intriguing book. This is good for teenage readers because often times they don’t willingly want to read, and this story will force the teenage or any reader to continue the book and continue reading the series. Secondly, this is a “good” book because it has a good balance of violence. This is a good thing because it provides readers with an exciting read. We hear and even see violence in our everyday life and I believe that it is something teenagers should be exposed to. This book gives children an insig...
Altogether, this is a book to be read thoughtfully and more than once. It is about an unusually sensitive and intelligent boy; but, then, are not all boys unusual and worthy of understanding? If they are bewildered at the complexity of modern life, unsure of themselves, shocked by the spectacle of perversity and evil around them - are not adults equally shocked by the knowledge that even children cannot escape this contact and awareness? & nbsp;
Searing the mind with stunning images while seducing with radiant prose, this brilliant first novel is a story of damaged lives and the indestructibility of the human spirit. It speaks about loss, about the urgency, pain and ultimate healing power of memory, andabout the redemptive power of love. Its characters come to understand the
Five teenagers who don't' know each other spend a Saturday in detention at the suburban school library. At first they squirm, fret and pick on each other. Then after sampling some marijuana, a real encounter session gets underway. The stresses and strains of adolescence have turned their inner lives into a minefield of disappointment, anger and despair.
As well, how this novel wrongly portrays the younger populations including their behaviours and interests by following stereotypes.
The book Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews tells a story about Greg Gaines‘s life. He try to make his crush envy by pretending to date this girl name Rachel. Rachel alway thought Greg was funny until one day. After some year later Rachel didn’t go to the same high school. During his high school life, he didn’t want to be making friend out talk to anyone but only be alone.One day his mom came to his room and told him his friend Rachel has cancer and is about to die. Greg’s mom wanted him to cheer Rachel and want him to make her feel better but he didn’t think it was a good idea because when Rachel and him were in middle school Greg didn’t like hang out with her after school.Rachel ask him many time but he keep saying he glue himself
“ I have always had a sense that we are all pretty much alone in life, particularly in adolescent. People always ask me the role models that I am providing for kids, and I say I can’t be concerned with that. I’m not worried about corrupting youth. I’m worrying about writing realistically and truthfully to affect the reader.”- Robert Cormier. Cormier is an author known for his negative novels such as “The Chocolate War” and “I am the Cheese”. He knew from the start that he wanted to become a writer. In all his work he likes to display the cold truth instead of making a joyful ending in everything resembling most books. The aspiration of all his books are all the conditions going on his kids lives. Robert Cormier’s childrens teenage lives influenced
The novel starts off with a young 16-year-old girl named Hazel with thyroid cancer that has spread to her lungs. She serves as the witty narrator and makes death seem like nothing to be afraid of. Augustus Waters, a 17-year-old formally diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, is in remission but has lost a leg due to his cancer. From the beginning, John Green makes readers feel suspenseful as to when or if Hazel is going to die and break Augustus’s heart. But when Augustus goes back into remission, a twist is added to the story and Hazel becomes the healthier partner in their relationship. Hazel and Augustus’s love is put to the test as Augustus’s health deteriorates more and more each day. Readers are sitting on the edge of their seats, as they must wait to see what the fate of this courageous couple will be.
I spent a lot of time considering what movie I would watch to write this essay. I listed off the movies that I would like to watch again, and then I decided on The Notebook. I didn’t really think I could write about adolescence or children, so I thought that, maybe, I could write about the elderly. The love story that The Notebook tells is truly amazing. I love watching this movie, although I cry every time I watch it. The Notebook is about an elderly man that tells the story of his life with the one he loves the most, his wife. He is telling the story to his wife, who has Alzheimer’s Disease, which is a degenerative disease that affects a person’s memory. She has no recollection of him or their life together, or even her own children. She wrote the story of their love herself, so that when he read the story to her, she would come back to him. There are three things that I would like to discuss about this movie. First, I would like to discuss their stage of life and the theory that I believe describes their stage of life the best. Second, I would like to discuss Alzheimer’s DIsease and its affect on the main character who has it and her family. Third, I would like to discuss how at the end of the movie, they died together. I know it is a movie, but I do know that it is known that elderly people who have been together for a long time, usually die not to far apart from one another.
