Life can offer a seemingly perfect relationship that takes a sudden drop towards separation without the realization that communication between partners has shown signs of deterioration early on in the connection. The film, 500 Days of Summer, directed by Marc Webb and produced by Steven J. Wolfe, recounts the story of a relationship set in the lives of Tom and Summer, two characters that met at their jobs in the same greeting card company. Although Summer made her doubts of love and relationships clear from the beginning, she and Tom soon develop a more intimate relationship. Through the communication that occurred within the relationship of Tom and Summer, it is apparent that misinterpretations of nonverbal communication and the styles of managing conflict ultimately led them to their relationship’s demise. Nonverbal communication contributed a large part in creating relational uncertainty within Tom and Summer’s relationship. There were multiple occasions within the film when Summer’s behavior may have led Tom to believe that she wanted more than the platonic relationship she established. For example, Summer kissed Tom in the copy room of the greeting card company after she discovered that he had feelings for her at a workplace karaoke night. “A kiss…can mean anything from a polite but superficial greeting to the most intense arousal” (205) states the communications textbook, Looking Out Looking In. In other words, a kiss is very dependent on contextual factors in order to gauge its significance. Although Summer consistently showed signs of her stance on love and relationships, Tom interpreted her feelings as those of romance. Communication can be ambiguous to the point that the existence of conflicts will be guaranteed. Tom and Summer’s relationship inevitably fell to its demise due this ambiguity and incompatibility, an occurrence that I have experienced myself. Since I come from a high-context culture, it is preferred by society to keep to myself and avoid directness. From this, I had often hoped that my partner would be able to pick up on my nonverbal behaviors much more effectively than they did. This assumption that others are like us is a debilitative tendency. For this reason, I believe that Tom should have established his feelings more directly towards Summer instead of letting his actions speak. Since people have different perceptions of life values, it is important to gauge the understanding of the other person and have a mutual boundary set within a relationship. At the beginning, Tom is very self-centered and preoccupied with his work. He finds what he wants to do more important than what his wife wants to do that night. Once faced with the reality of death, he realizes how important his wife is to him. This forces him to be strong and stay alive, for her sake. The only reason he made it back into his house was because of how much he cared for her. Tom then decides to go find her at the movies, which shows that he has become less self-centered and more aware of his wife’s feelings.

The film story is about two new graduates, Harry and Sally, and their journey to finding themselves through relationships, friendships and the encounters with each other 's overs the years. “When Harry Met Sally” depicts the ups and downs of a relationship between and man and a woman over the course of twelve years. These ups and downs are also referred to as the ten interpersonal relationship stages. A couple’s communication throughout their relationship, both positive and negative, determine whether the relationship will be maintained or terminated. Although some couples experience every stage from the beginning to the end of their relationship, many partners, like Harry and Sally, flow back and forth between these stages and sometimes skip a stage completely, making every relationship entirely unique.
Tom's acts in love are childish and immature. At first, Tom's love for Becky Thatcher is just a crush. He tells Becky about his "marriage" to Amy and it starts a fight. After that, they both play a game of "hard to get". After this, Tom is too proud to apologize. Also, Tom makes good decisions. First, when Becky accidentally rips Mr. Dobbins' book a, Tom takes the blame, and this ends their feud. Another mature event takes place in McDougal's cave. When Tom and Becky are in the cave, they become lost. Then Tom takes responsibility for himself and Becky's life. These events are part of becoming a young man.

Especially you, Jenny Beckman… Bitch.” With this statement, the narrator cautions in the beginning of this film, that it is not a love story accompanied by a happy ending; instead, it is a heartbreaking, nonlinear narrative that depicts the two’s failed relationship through the male antagonists memories of their 500 days together.
This provided the audience a technical term before showing movies. The first clip came from the movie (500) Days of Summer of two people’s hands touching each other. In this clip, characters Summer and Tom were talking about their feelings. Summer told Tom that she did not want a serious relationship. Summer ends up marrying some other guy. Those who have not seen this movie and only saw this clip would assume that they are holding hands like a couple. However, in this context, Summer was holding Tom’s hand for a short amount of time before she left and went away. This shows that the holding of hands between Summer and Tom was bittersweet because of the potential of Summer and Tom being a couple only have that possibility fade away. As a result, the feelings from both Summer and Tom holding hands is a neutral emotion since it is a bittersweet feeling. It is not communication with words, but we use nonverbal communication when we talk. We use nonverbal communication without even realizing it in every facet of our lives. This type of communication can be challenging depending on someone’s culture. Something that means one thing in America, can mean something totally different in another country. It is important to know this so that you don’t offend someone from another culture (Wood, 2016, p. 149).
