Carl Carlton is one of those quite successful and popular musicians all over the world. This American songwriter and singer was born 21 May 1953 in the US nothwest city of Detroit, the largest and more populous in the state of Michigan. As surprising as it may seem, Carlton began his professional carrer when he was a teenager thanks to a kid’s baseball game. As reported by several sources, Carl liked to play baseball with others neighborhood’s teenagers, and during games he used to sing as well. Carlton voice at that time was already so powerful, clear and tuned, that one of the neighbours living in an appartment near the place the adolescents were playing thought they had a radio playing loud music down there and yelled down them to turn off …show more content…
the radio. The neighbour was pretty surprised when they yelled back they did not have any radio, and that was Carl singing. The man could not believe it and went inmediately down to check it by himself; there he found out it was really Carl Carlton’s voice. Somedays later, the neighbour took Carlton to a recording agency (Lando Records) where he began his professional career as Little Carl Carlton, trying to take advantage of some existing similiarity between Carlton’s and Stevie Wonder’s voices, and the fact that at that time Wonder was known as Little Stevie Wonder. Carlton’s professional career Carlton’s first singles were I Love True Love, Don't You Need A Boy Like Me, and So What.
In 1968 Carlton was signed by the well known American record producer and song writer Don D. Robey (1903 – 1975), who along his professional career promoted numerous R&B (rhythm and blue) artists. Considering Carlton had already performed gospel music by singing in church’s chorus, Robey decided to capitalize Carlton’s voice capabilities and style. Therefore, their first collaboration resulted in Competition Ain't Nothing, a song that occupied the 36th position in the US R&B chart and the 75th in the US pop …show more content…
chart. In what specialists consider was a big change for the young Carlton, he decided to move to the US southern city of Houston, in Texas, where the Robey’s recording label Back Beat Records, was located. He moved to the roomy and airy ranch Robey had there and devoted himself to record at the Duke Peacock (another Robey’s recording label) and performing in night clubs. This was a fruitful time for the singer, who collaborated with several important R&B stars, like the American producer, songwriter and musician David Crawford (linked to successful hits like Young Hearts Run Free; Precious, precious; and What a man); the American production and songwriting team Gamble and Huff (producer of 22 Gold Albums and 15 Gold singles), and the R&B and pop producer and songwriter Walter Sigler (bets known as Bunny). Carlton performed some hits like 46 Drums - 1 Guitar (1968 – 19th and 105th in the US R&B and US pop charts respectively); Don’t walk away (1969 – 36th in the R&B chart); How I Got Over (1969 – 42th in the R&B chart); Drop By My Place (1970 - 12th and 78th in the US R&B and US pop charts respectively); and I Can Feel It (1971 – 47th in the US R&B chart). In 1972 Robey sold his record labels Back Beat and Duke Peacock to ABC Records and Carlton began working for that company. Thus, a Carlton’s compilation album (You Can't Stop a Man in Love), was released in 1973. Nevertheless, 1974 was one of the most sucessful years in Carlton’s career due to the song Everlasting Love. As several specialized sources report, Carlton was a friend of the American musician and soul singer David Ruffin, well known as a member of the successful vocal group The Temptations. Carlton liked to listen Ruffin’s albums, and was particularly impressed by this song. Although he did not know the song had already been a Robert Knight’s hit back in 1967, he decided to perform a single with it. Hence, he asked the record producer, singer and songwriter Gerald Don Schroeder, to collaborate with him and they produced a disco arrangement of Everlasting Love that obtained the 6th and the 11th positions in the US pop and US R&B charts respectively. This was the first time a Carlton’s song was included in the chart’s Top Ten. Consequently, an Everlasting Love album was released in 1974, as a result of collaboration between Carlton and the successful producer Bob Monaco (Rags to Rufus album ranked 4th in both US pop and US albums charts in 1974).
This album included two other successful songs, Smokin’ Room (13th and 91st in the US R&B and US pop charts) and Morning Noon and Night (71st in the US pop chart). Afterwards, Carlton released a new album in 1975 (I wanna be with you) as a result of a new collaboration with Bunny Sigler, that although was well received by critics, did not charted well. As several specialized sources report, the cause might have been the dispute Carlton was involved at that time with ABC Records about royalties. Carlton had to wait for more than a year until he could finally break his contract with ABC, and during this time he was not allowed to record any song. He signed with another record agency (Mercury) in 1977, but he could release only 1 single under this
label. Finally, in 1980, after some years without a recording contract, Carlton obtained a deal with 20th Century Records for producing some singles, thanks to the American record producer, songwriter, and soul singer Leon Haywood. Both, Haywood and Carlton collaborated and produced a Haywood’s cover (Fighting in the Name of Love and This Feeling's Rated Xtra) with James Ingram that charted well. This opened the doors for a new collaboration between Carlton and Haywood, resulting in the famous song She’s a Bad Mama Jama that enabled Carlton to obtain a nomination for Grammy Awards. This song reached the 2nd, 22nd and 34th in the US R&B, US pop and UK charts respectively. Furthermore, the song remained second for 8 continuos weeks, only surpassed by Endless Love performed by two superstars like Lionel Richie and Diana Ross. After this Carlton’s career continued and he release four more albums Carl Carlton (1981); The Bad C.C. (1982); Private Property (1985) and Main Event (1994), that although did not were as succesful as the previous ones, included some singles like Baby I need your loving and Private Property charted well in the US R&B. Recently, in 2010, Carlton went back to his origins and released a gospel single Good is good. As a result in 2011 he was nominated for the Oustanding Gospel vocalist of the Music Awards of Detroit. Undoubdetely, Carl Carlton is one of those amazing musicians that have imposed his personal quality in the very complex and difficult US musical environment.

In October 1955 as Elvis' special advisor (Bob Neal was still managing Elvis), Colonel negotiated a recording contract with RCA Victor for Elvis. It should be noted that it was, at that time, the custom for the A&R people to choose the songs for an artist to record. However Colonel insisted that Elvis choose his own songs. Today it is common practice for the artist to choose their own material. . . .but Elvis was the first.
This paper will be an updated version of my last paper which talked about a portion of Barry Gordy's background, Diana Ross and the Supremes, the Four Tops, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, the Temptations and their start at Motown. How Motown was the first American music label owned by an African-American, the first music label to successfully market black artists to white mainstream audiences. How Motown was responsible for discovering, mentoring, and perfecting a lot of American popular music's most influential and successful artists and the best albums and artists and what new artists have entered Motown.

When you think your average baseball player, what do you think of? The player usually has all of his arms, legs, and no physical disabilities. Anyone who plays baseball would think it is hard to imagine that a person born without a right arm is able to play the game and let only be able to be a pitcher. Jim Abbott faces all the odds and has ten-year career in the major leagues. Abbott had to faces many obstacles throughout life and his playing career. Jim Abbott grew up being picked on since he didn’t have a right arm. When Abbott was younger he would use a steel hook as right hand and other children were afraid of him. Also, they called him names like Mr. Hook.

His musical career was to soon take off like a rocket. In the same year he graduated he also got a record deal with the legendary Sun Records in Memphis Tennessee. Soon after he records his first album with Sun Records his single “That’s All Right” was released. The first d. j. to play the single was Dewey Philips. Elvis was quickly becoming a superstar and was too much for Sun Records to handle all the business.
Memphis is considered to be a dangerous city by many around the country with not many attractions besides Martin Luther king, jr. What they do not know is that Memphis is full of rich music and history. Various genres have made an impact on people’s daily lives such as gospel, soul, funk, blues, jazz, R&B, pop, country, and rap. Stax records were found in in 1957 which was known as satellite radio at the time. Stax has made a major impact on helping the lives of people in Memphis. Stax has overlooked the obstacles of color and racism by giving many artists of different races the opportunity they dreamed of. The blues emerged as a distinct African-American musical form in the early twentieth century. It typically employed a twelve-bar framework and three-lined stanzas; its roots are based in early African-American songs, such as field hollers and work songs, and generally have a melancholy mood. The blues can be divided into many sub-genres, including Classical, Country, and Urban. The purpose of this paper is to focus on the careers of two of Classical blues most influential and legendary singers: Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith.
Released in 1997, Buena Vista Social Club immediately became an international success and won a Grammy Award in 1998. Around the world, especially in U.S. where the album was welcomed most heartily, Ry Cooder was considered the hero of Cuban music (Hernandez 65). Being the producer of the album, Cooder was assumed to discover a “lost treasure” in Cuban culture. However, Tanya Kateri Hernandez, in an article about Buena Vista Social Club, revealed that Juan de Marcos Gonzalez, not Cooder, was the person “who masterminded and facilitated the collaboration.” (Hernandez 62). Also in this article, it is noted that Juan de Marcos Gonzalez “implicitly acquiesced to Cooder’s propagation of the colonial myth for the purpose of ensuring the commercial success of the collaboration.” (Hernandez 64). Other musicians in the Buena Vista Social Club ensemble followed Gonzalez’s step, as there was hardly another choice for them.
Through Elvis Presley, rock ‘n’ roll changed the face of American music, and influenced a whole generation’s political philosophy. Composer Leonard Berstein once said, “He introduced the beat to everything and changed everything-music, language, clothes; it’s a whole new social revolution-the 60s come from it” (Wattenberg 6B). To his credit, Elvis embraced rhythm and blues not as a from to be imitated, but as a form to honored and interprete... ...
On January 8th, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, the “King of Rock and Roll” was born. His name was Elvis Presley. He was the son of Vernon Presley who was a truck driver, and his mother was Gladys, a sewing machine operator. He had a twin brother named Jesse, but he was still born, leaving Elvis to grow up as an only child. His father was hardly around, and he was imprisoned for three years for forgery. Surrounding him as a child though, was the gospel music of the Pentecost church, where his love for music first took roots in his heart. In the fifth grade his teacher Oletta Grimes asked Elvis to participate in the talent contest on Children’s Day at the Mississippi – Alabama Fair and Dairy Show. At age ten, he donned his cowboy hat and slipped into a cowboy suit to sing in the talent show, but he was in need of a chair in order to reach the microphone. He sang his personal rendition of Red Foley’s “Old Shep”; it won him a second prize and a free ticket for all the numerous rides in the park. His following Birthday, he received his first guitar from the Tupelo Hardware Store and took lessons from his dad’s brother. In 1948 his family picked up their life and moved to Memphis, Tennessee. It was there that he was exposed to the rhythmic sound of the blues, as well as Jazz on Beale Street, where he grew up...
Elton john has been claimed “the Liberace of rock and roll” (8) for his spectacular show of music, imagery, outward flamboyancy and artistic passion. Originally born Reginald (Reggie) Kenneth Dwight, Elton Hercules John started his first band at 14 (2) and has continued to set a foundation for American pop music for 53 years. Elton’s music is distinctive in its ability to draw attention of listeners with his original combination of sound (2). The songs written both by Elton and lyricist, Bernie Taupin (3) were premeditated to give both a rhythm and undertones of sentimental value. The decline of rock and roll in America allowed for Elton john to succeed.
After 1949 the evolution of R&B began. In the 1950’s rhythm and blues somewhat developed into Rock and Roll. Little Richard, along with others, was one of the pioneers of R&B, he became one of the recording artist for RCA records. Working with talented but unknown R&B musician...
