Career Fair Reflection

I felt both prepared and unprepared for the career fair. On one hand, I did my homework before the fair, so I felt prepared in that way. I knew exactly which companies I wanted to visit and which positions at each company I was interested in. I had my resume critiqued and updated it with the recommendations provided. On the other hand, regardless of how much research I did or how much I pored over the details of my resume, I still felt unprepared because of my lack of real-life engineering experience. I felt as though I didn’t have anything to prove or even suggest that I would be a competent scientific researcher. I had expected the winter career fair to be quieter than the fall fair, but it was packed. The atmosphere was one of bustling energy tinged with the collective nervousness of hundreds of students trying to get hired. I was nervous myself, but the recruiters that I talked to came across as friendly and very willing to consider freshmen for open positions. This was a pleasant contradiction to my expectations, which were that employers would be polite but would make it clear that the jobs and internships that they had available were overwhelmingly likely to go to upperclassmen. I had practiced and polished my elevator pitch for my favorite company before the career fair, and the representative of that company that I talked to seemed to appreciate my pitch. She noted that it was good that I had come prepared with a specific position that I was interested in, as opposed to asking her what positions were available. She also asked to look over my resume and made some positive comments about the extent of my work experience, and the fact that I was recently promoted at my dining hall job. At the end of our interaction, she asked to keep my resume, and encouraged me to apply online both for the position that I was specifically interested in and for any other positions that caught my eye.
