Introduction:
Carbon fibers were invented in the late 1800’s by Thomas Edison for use as filaments in the first lightbulbs. They were originally composed of cellulose based materials like cotton, which underwent pyrolysis: the process of being carbonised by baking at high temperatures. These early carbon fibres were used predominantly for their resistance to changes in temperature and also their ability to conduct, however lacked the high tensile strength of modern fibres. Nowadays these are created from petroleum based substances. Scientific developments allowed the discovery of high strength carbon fibres in the 1950’s and these first entered the market as a low density alternative to steel4.
Major aerospace engineering bodies such as NASA soon realised the importance of this technology and scientists began to develop carbon fibre composites for use in aircraft and spacecraft. Currently, carbon fibre composites are some of the most widely used materials in the aerospace and aviation industry as one of strongest materials available, being five times the strength of steel. It is also a third of the weight of steel and therefore incredibly lightweight. A composite is defined as a material consisting of two or more individual constituents. These composites are made from carbon fibre fabric (the fibres woven together) which is permeated with epoxy resin at temperatures of around 125 degrees. The product is a carbon fiber sheet. This can then be shaped into a pattern and finally bonded with a structural adhesive7. Kevlar is made up of carbon fibers and shares the same characteristics as other aromatic polyamide. Kevlar has distinctive trait and chemical shape that makes it special from other human made fibers. Kevlar is made up of mixture of pure strength, high resistance, hardness, and heat stability. Nylon and polyester became available for human production of fibers in the late 20th century. They used to trim the fiber at its edge back in their time, but they need to reach a maximum of strength and an initial value. In order for that to achieve, the Kevlar molecules should have an extended set of figures and almost supreme clear order. With these bendable molecules such as nylon, this can only be made by mechanically pulled after the rotation process.

Thus, the innovators of the world retain that reason: they change things for the better because of the positive benefit that would befit doing so - the positive benefit for not only themselves, but the world. Thomas Alva Edison was born on February 11, 1847, in Milan, Ohio. Thomas's father, Samuel, was an exiled political activist from Canada. His mother, Nancy, was a school teacher. As a child he got scarlet fever which left him to have loss of hearing in both ears. As he got older he was almost deaf. He was misbehaving in school, so he was home school by his mother. At 12, he started his own business selling newspapers to train passengers and started his own newspaper called the "Grand Trunk Herald". He saved a 3 year old from being run over by a train, so the father taught him how to use a telegraph. At 21, he went to Boston and got a job at the Western Union Company. In 1879 two scientist, Joseph Wilson Swan and Thomas A Edison, had independent breakthroughs for a longer lasting incandecent bulb with their use of a carbon fiber filament derived from cotton. It lasted a maximum of 13.5 hours. In 1880 Edison also developed a filament derived from bamboo which lasted up to 1200 hours. This was good, but to create a truly efficient bulb something different was need to creae a filament with very high temperatures but without degeneration and loss of heat.

Carbon-fiber-reinforced-polymer (CFRP) is a composite polymer made up of carbon fibers and a binding polymer. The binding polymer can be a thermoset resin or thermoplastic polymer(s). Examples of thermoplastic polymers that can bind with carbon fiber to make CFRP are polyester, nylon, or vinyl ester. A thermoset resin that can combine with the carbon fiber to make CFRP is epoxy. The combination of the carbon fibers and a thermoset resin or thermoplastic polymer producing CFRP results in a light weight fiber-reinforced plastic that is tremendously strong. Depending on the binding polymer, CFPRs have a wide range of applications and are used when a light weight material with high rigidity and strength are required.
