This leads to one of the biggest questions that scientist have been researching for about hundreds of years. Is cancer a genetic disease or metabolic disease? To know this, one must first know what cancer is? Where does cancer start from? Genetic diseases affect or causes a mutation in the hereditary information in your genes. Also, it affects the number of chromosomes inside your cells. The reason why cancer cannot only be a genetic disease is because, if it's a genetic disease, that means that you inherited it from your parents or there was an error in your DNA or genetic information. If cancer was inherited, then it eventually would have affected everyone in a family. Also if there was an error in the DNA or genetics, than both must have been caused from something else inside the body. They can also arise during a person’s lifetime as a result of errors that occur as cells divide or because of damage to DNA caused by certain environmental exposures”. By looking deep into the research, and the definition of these two types of diseases whether genetic or metabolic, they both have a deep correlation between each other. If deep thinking was put in, genetic diseases are mostly inherited from parents and if these parents got it from their parents and so on, they would eventually catch up to the first person who got cancer in the family, and that special case’s only cause for cancer would be metabolic disease. This shows that the starting of the metabolic disease which lead to cancer also lead to to the genetic disease in which the cell had an error, and that information was passed on down the line. Cancer has been an active concern in our society for the past couple decades, since we truly discovered the nature of cancer and the potency it brings along with it. However, it was not until the mid-20th century that scientists were beginning to truly understand the origin of cancer. Scientists dating back all the way to the Renaissance, when they first began performing autopsies to learn more about the human body and form, noticed abnormalities but it never clicked that it was something much worse than it seemed. Research has continued since then, and it has continued to thrive even to this day. When James Watson and Francis Crick discovered DNA and it’s chemical structure in 1962, it opened up doors that even they could not expect. With the understanding of DNA and how it affected the way we look at life, came the beginning of the understanding of mutated DNA (which is a cause of the growth of cancerous cells). In this past century, researching scientists discovered that cancer is linked with the DNA that resides in a cell’s nucleus. By ways of damage to the cells via chemicals or radiation, or even introduction of a new DNA, the cancerous cells begin to form and duplicate. We are learning more and more about cancer and how to fight it, but we still have much more to learn.

Most people believe that biological factors play a huge role in members of a family becoming ill. We often think that our genetic makeup will ultimately lead our health down the same paths as earlier members of our families that have suffered from illnesses. While this concept may appear to be rather common, genetic factors show likelihood that the possibility is there, but not a certitude.
