All cancer has a genetic basis. It is triggered by mutations in the genes of a cell which then cause the cell to abnormally reproduce. Many of these gene changes are caused by random mutations when the cell is dividing. It only takes one cell mutating to cause cancer. There are no symptoms for the beginning of cancer and only five to ten percent of all cancers are caused by parents passing down genetic mutations to their children. The remaining are caused by environmental changes (Douglas).
Cancer directly affects the lives of approximately 13.7 million Americans. In 2014 alone it is estimated that there will be 1,665,540 patients diagnosed with cancer (Jones). Of these people, 43, 250 people will be diagnosed with oral cancer (Douglas). 585,720 Americans are expected to die of cancer in 2014 at a rate of almost 1,600 people per day. Cancer has become the second most common cause of death in the US. It accounts for 1 in every 4 deaths despite having an 80 to 90% survival rate for oral cancer (Jones).
While doctors are not always sure as to why one person is more susceptible to oral cancer then another, they do know that oral cancer is not contagious. There are no known forms of cancer that are contagious. There are certain risk factors that make some people more likely than others to develop cancer (Jones). Oral cancer is very dangerous because it is not usually noticed by the patient in its early stages.
Human Papillomavirus is a common viral infection that has emerged as an important risk factor. Anyone who is sexually active is at risk for getting this disease; although there is a vaccine to prevent it. Once someone has HPV they are more at risk for genital warts and Cervical cancer (CDC). It can years for the symptoms to ...

Cancer of the lips can be cause by exposure to the sun. Using lotion or lip balm or sunscreen can reduce the risk. As well as wearing a hat with a brim(Jones). Some studies have also suggested that not eating enough fruits and vegetables may increase the chance of getting oral cancer (Douglas).
Oral cancer can be deadly if it is not caught early on. It is important for people to look at the chances of them getting oral cancer and if they have a family history. They need to understand that there are environmental factors around them that they can avoid to ensure they live as long and as healthy a life they can. Cancer is not avoidable; however, it is important for people to do everything in there power to avoid the disease that if not caught can do harm to so many.
What is the human papillomavirus (HPV)? According to the US government’s National Cancer Institute, human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are a collection of more than one hundred viruses, many types having the ability to grow tumors or polyps that are malignant and others benign. Certain of the viruses are capable of forming genital warts. The HPVs that cause the common warts on hands and feet are different from those that cause growth in the throat or genital area (Human Papillomavirus). Professors Joe Cummins and Dr. Mae-Wan Ho inform us that some types are associated with cancer, and are called “high risk” HPVs. Of the more than one hundred types of HPVs, over thirty can be passed on through sexual contact. Most HPV infections occur without any symptoms and go away without treatment over the course of a few years. However, HPV infection sometimes persists for many years, with or without causing detectable cell abnormalities. Infection from “High risk” types of HPV is the main cause of cervical cancer. Pap smears have also led to earlier detection of these infections. Nearly all women who are sexually active will have HPV inf...
This is brings up public health concern because HPV was usually widely known to infect mostly women and enforce to cause of cervical cancer. However, a head and neck cancer is also serious disease in worldwide by placing HNC as 5th most common cancer in 2008. Particularly, cohort studied from 1982 up to 2005 from Australia and Sweden showed HPV DNA positive incidence increased from about...
Sexually transmitted infection (STI) is acknowledged as a sporadic cause of cervical cancer. The aetiological association is restricted to the family of the human papillomaviruses (HPV's) (Bosch et al, 2008).
The cancer cells from gene-mutation. Scientists now know some of the risk factors for lung cancer can cause certain changes in the DNA of lung cells. These changes can lead to not normal cell growth and, sometimes, cancer. DNA is the chemical in each of our cells that makes up our genes and how our cells function. People usually look like their parents because they are the source of our DNA. But DNA affects more than how we look; it also can affect our risk for developing certain diseases, including some kinds of cancer like lung cancer etc…Some people inherit DNA mutation from their parents that greatly increase their risk for developing certain cancers.
The two most dangerous types of HPV do not cause warts. The Center for Disease control reported that the more deadly strands, “cause normal cells in the body to turn abnormal, and might lead to cancer over time. These HPV types can cause Cervical Cancer,” and the other types previously stated. Cervical Cancer does not have any symptoms until it reaches its more advanced stages. The CDC recommends, “It is important for women to get regular screening for cervical cancer. Screening tests can find early signs of disease so that problems can be treated early, before they ever turn into
to the CDC, around 30,000 people in the United States learn they have mouth or throat cancers and about 8,000 of those hard working Americans lose their life. Sadly, only half of the people diagnosed with cancer from this habit do not live longer than five years. The side effects that are most noticeable are usually stained teeth and poor dental health. Small ...
Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (HNSCC) is the 8th and 13th most common malignancy in the world for males and females, respectively, with the majority of malignancies of the upper aero-digestive tract being oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC) (Warnakulasuriya, 2009; Scully and Bagan, 2009; Nicole et al., 2010). The highest incidence of OSCC is found in India due to the increased preponderance of habits like chewing tobacco, betel quid and areca-nut which are the most important risk factors (Facompre et al., 2012). According to The Gujarat Cancer & Research Registry, the scenario is worst in Gujarat because 53.65% in males and 15.64% in females of all cancers are found to be Tobacco Related Cancers (TRCs) (National Cancer Registry Report, 2008). Despite the recent advances in first line treatments, the 5 year survival rate after treatment remains disappointingly low at about 15-50% for the past 3 decades (Carvalho et al., 2005; Prince and Ailles, 2008; Warnakulasuriya, 2009; McCullough et al., 2010). The resultant poor prognosis is owed to a low response rate to current therapeutic strategies, late stage diagnosis, high risk of primary site recurrence and aggressive metastases to loco-regional lymph nodes, strongly suggestive of an urge to improve the diagnostic capabilities and treatment efficacy.
-Characterized by the elongation and hyperkeratosis of the filiform papillae, resulting in this hairlike appearance. The elongated papillae usually exhibit brown, yellow, or black pigmentation. Most patients are asymptomatic, but occasionally patients complain of irritation, gagging, or an altered taste. Patients are usually heavy smokers with poor oral hygiene and some have vitamin deficiencies, GI problems, or radiation therapy. Cures range from just brushing the tongue to corticosteroid therapy.
Over the past few decades, cancer has become a very prominent disease. There are many different types of cancer and many different causes of the the disease. Most cancers are caused by a genetic mutation. The most common type occurs when a cell is divided. Proto-oncogenes, which are alleles in normal cells, mutate to form oncogenes.

What is oral cancer exactly? By definition, oral cancer “is a growth of malignant cells in any part of the oral cavity, which includes the lips, tongue, hard and soft palates, salivary glands, lining of the cheeks, floor of the mouth or under the tongue, gums, and teeth.”
Around all over the world head and neck [H&N] malignant tumors are considered a major public health disorder. Head and neck cancers represent roughly about 6% of all cancers types. Two main risk factors cause this type of cancer are tobacco and alcohol, other risk factors can participate such as prolonged sun exposure, Some strains of virus, Gender, Age, Race ,Poor Oral and dental hygiene, environmental or occupational inhalants (certain chemicals, wood dust, paint fumes and inhaling asbestos ) and weakened immune system. About 90% of these tumors are Squamous cell carcinomas, So named Squamous Cell Carcinomas (HNSCC). Head and neck cancers expression is usually used to describe tumors originate from the
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2013), human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection with over 40 types that can cause infection. Many people who contract the disease never develop signs or symptoms; yet can still pass it on (CDC, 2013). In the case that symptoms do develop, HPV has been linked to genital warts and several types of cancer including cervical. To prevent one’s chance of developing these health effects, two vaccines have been created: Gardasil and Cervarix. Both of these vaccines are given in a series of three shots over a six-month period (CDC, 2013).
HPV can cause cervical cancer/or genital warts. There are studies that show the 50% of sexually active individuals has experienced this infection at some point in their life and males generally cay the virus. HPV is usually diagnosed as part of a gynecological exam. HPV is usually diagnosed as part of a gynecological exam. (Greenberg, Bruess, & Oswalt, 2014)
In fact, there was an estimated 600,920 deaths from cancer in 2017 and 1,688,780 new cases. Every three minutes two people die from cancer in the United States. Also, anyone can get cancer. Each year 12.7 million people discover that they have cancer worldwide. Each year seven point six million people die from cancer worldwide.
