The side effects of using smokeless tobacco could wind up being fatal for a percentage of its users. Some of the dangers it can cause, can destroy your personal appearance and how you look in a couple of ways. It can cause tumors or cancer to form in the back of your throat or gums. It can require removing an entire piece of your face to fix these kind of life threatening problems. For one example a professional baseball player that used to play in the major league by the name of Bill Tuttle used chewing tobacco, or dip, for a good portion of his life. Using these dangerous products cost him his jawbone, his right cheekbone, most of his gum line, and taste buds. The cancer caused by his habit cost him his life in 1998.
After Bill Tuttle received the news of his cancer he spent the rest of his long-lived life trying to draw young adults, as well as full grown adults and athletes away from smokeless tobacco. Even the greatest player to ever play professional baseball, Babe Ruth, made a disgusting habit out of chew. He died at a ripe age of 52 from an or pharyngeal tumor, which is a cancerous tumor that develops in the back of the throat. But as we all know, it’s not only athletes who regret their use of chewing tobacco. According

to the CDC, around 30,000 people in the United States learn they have mouth or throat cancers and about 8,000 of those hard working Americans lose their life. Sadly, only half of the people diagnosed with cancer from this habit do not live longer than five years. The side effects that are most noticeable are usually stained teeth and poor dental health. ...t ways. Snuff or chewing tobacco. The chewing tobacco tends to usually come in shredded, twisted or even bricked tobacco leaves that users pack in their mouths. Snuff is more of a fine grain substance similar to something like fine sand or even coffee grounds that come in thin paper pouches that a person puts between their cheek and gums. This form happens to be a lot less messy but both are just as dangerous. No matter what form this product presents itself in all of the same dangerous chemicals are involved. Just because some famous ball players have used these types of things it does not make it ok. Babe and Bill are definitely not the only ones that have regretted their dumb decision to start this impeccably raunchy type of tobacco use. There is a reason why it is for people at a minimum age of 18. It can cause more serious health problems to the younger people.
Growing up with a best friend who has been smoking since middle school, I have seen many of the negative effects it has on a person. Football was a passion and way of life for Andy; however, smoking caused him to struggle with breathing while running up and down the field. He would cut down on his daily amount of cigarettes before and during the season, but cutting down was little help for him. Not only was his breathing affected by smoking, but he also had yellow teeth, smoker’s cough, and would get “the shakes” when in need of a smoke.
According to the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, it stated that the nicotine in smoking cigarettes can be very dangerous, damaging to the human body. It’s known that smoking can cause chronic lung disease, coronary heart disease and stroke. In addition, smoking also causes cancer of the lungs, larynx, esophagus, mouth, and bladder. Smoking tobacco products is also known to contribute to cancer of cervix, pancreas and kidneys. People that don’t smoke tobacco products can also be harmed by second hand smoke. Smoking cigarettes is a detrimental practice not only to the smoker, but also to everyone around the smoker. According to an article from the American Lung Association, “Health Effects” (n.d.), “Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., causing over 438,000 deaths per year”. The umbrella term for tobacco use includes the use of cigarettes, cigars, e-cigs and chewing tobacco. While tobacco causes adverse health consequences, it also has been a unifying factor for change in public health. While the tobacco industries targets specific populations, public health specifically targets smokers, possible smokers, and the public to influence cessation, policies and education.
In conclusion, tobacco products contribute to both systemic and oral harm. Smokeless tobacco does not need to be promoted as a “safer” choice rather patients need to be educated on the increased risk of oral cancer. Dental hygienists' active involvement in educating the community on the dangers smokeless tobacco, and encouraging cessation is extremely important in decreasing the potential explosion of oral cancer in future generations.
