When people hear the word cancer, they automatically think death. Worldwide cancer is the leading cause of death. Cancer is also the second leading cause of death in the United States. One out of every four deaths in the United States is due to cancer. In the year 2012 1.9 million deaths were caused by lung cancer, 745,000 deaths were caused by liver cancer, 723,000 deaths were caused by stomach cancer, 694,000 deaths were caused by colorectal cancer, 521,000 deaths were caused by breast cancer, and 400,000 deaths were caused by esophageal cancer. These cancers are also the main types of cancers.
The true question here is what is cancer? Where did the word “cancer” come from? According to “The History of Cancer”, the word cancer came from the father of medicine Hippocrates, a Greek physician. Hippocrates used Greek words such as carcinos and carcinoma, these words were actually used to describe a crab which Hippocrates thought a tumor resembled. Even though cancer is a very old and well known disease, there is still no official cure for cancer.
Cancer is a term used for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and begin to invade other tissues. The term cancer is also used when cells start to produce too quickly when there are not enough cells dying. Cancer cells are also called malignant cells. Cancerous cells are able to invade other healthy cells and can spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems.
There are two types of tumors, benign tumors and malignant tumors. Benign tumors are not cancerous. These types of tumors can usually be removed and do not come back in most cases. Benign tumors do not spread to other parts of the body and the cells do not invade other tissues. Unlike b...

...it. Such as apples, apples contain a high dosage of vitamin C and photochemical that can lower the risk of getting breast cancer. Apples also lower the risk of getting stomach, mouth, pharynx, and larynx cancer. It was studied that if the average human ate at least one apple a day the chance of getting cancer would be slimmed down by a third. Drinking coffee can also help prevent kidney, pancreatic, and endometrial cancer.
It is strongly believed that a cure for cancer will be found. Thousands of charities and organizations are raising money to help find a cure. Many charitable events take place such as Relay for Life. In the future we hope and pray that our descendants will not have to worry about this awful disease. Just like Bill Clinton stated “It is now conceivable that our children’s children will know the term cancer only as a constellation of stars.”
Some studies suggest that taking a daily multivitamin containing folic acid or folate can lower colorectal cancer risk. Other studies suggest that increasing calcium intake via supplements or low-fat dairy products may lower risk. Studies of vitamin A, C, D, and E supplements have yielded conflicting results, and additional research is needed.
Cancer of the lung was nearly nonexistent in the early 1900’s. By the middle of the 20th century an epidemic became apparent throughout the United States and the rest of the world. It is primarily correlated with the widespread abundance of cigarette smoking in the world. The tobacco industry has multiplied its production immediately prior to World War I. There was a typical 20 to 30 year lagging period between the initiation of cigarette smoking and the actual tumor formation in the lungs. Lung cancer is the cancer that originates in the tissues of the lungs. It occurs when cells in the lung start to grow rapidly in an uncontrolled manner. Lung cancer can start anywhere in the lungs and affect any part of the respiratory system. Most of all lung cancer cases start in the lining of the bronchi (health-cares.net, 2005). It is the leading cause of all cancer deaths in the world. During this time the tobacco companies would continue to say that cigarette smoking was not addictive and did not cause any type of cancer. Even with all evidence in the world today about tobacco causing cancer, Tobacco companies still remain the most profitable business in the world. Lung cancer is very common in both women and men. Women account for about 40 percent of the lung cancer cases in the world. Women who smoke are more than twice as likely to develop lung cancer as those of men who smoke (Tavor, 2005).
The leading cause of death in America is lung cancer. Lung cancer is ranked top 10 fatal cancers in the United States. There are many types of ways to get lung cancer. There is radon gas it occurs outdoors naturally. Then there is second hand smoke that comes from other people smoking. People are even getting lung cancer from cancer causing agents, this happens from carcinogens. You can also get it from air pollution indoors and outdoors. Also there are gene-mutations that form cancer causing cells. Then there is the one everyone blamed lung cancer is smoking.
Smoking is the most preventable cause of death in our society. During 1995, approximately 2.1 million people in developed countries died as a result of smoking. One tobacco use is responsible for nearly one in five deaths in the United States. Lung Cancer mortality are about 23 times higher for current male smokers and 13 times higher for current female smokers compared to a lifelong never-smoker.
There are more than a million people suffer from cancer in the United States every day. Lung cancer is not the only type of cancer but it affects many people and families every day. Lung cancer makes the lives of its patients and the families. Lung cancer is one of the deadliest types of cancer and also one of the most common. Hundreds of thousands of people get diagnosed with lung cancer every year in just the United States. Also close to just as many people die from lung cancer in the US every year. I am going to talk about lung cancer and what it is, how to lower your risk of getting it, statistics of it, and the research and treatment of it.
Cancer has become the one of the most feared things for human beings. The various type of cancer have been discovered and there are still a lot of it that undiscoverable. Cancer is a complex disease that have a group of disease. The cancer itself cannot be describe by words. The causes of this cancer is still not being able to be discovered fully. There are only minor factor that can lead to this disease. The carcinogens are believed to be one of the causes that lead to cancer such as asbestos, radon gas, tobacco, PVC and much more from our chemical industries. The environment especially near to the industrial that produce chemical waste can be one of the causes lead to cancer. Cancer also have relation with our age, lifestyle, and diet and also can be genetically inherited. It is believed that older people have higher tendency to get cancer than younger people. Our lifestyle and diet also plays a role causing a cancer by our daily life routine. Smoking tobacco and eating unconsciously (still in research) can also increase the possibility to get cancer especially lung cancer that cause by smoking tobacco. There are several cases, cancer were inherited from their parents. Various type of viruses such as HIV, HPV, EBV and many more virus has a high capabilities to increase the chance a patient to get a cancer because these viruses lower their body immunity to disease.
Cancer is the name given to a collection of related diseases. In all forms of cancer: the cells in the body begin to divide uncontrollably and then spread into the surrounding tissues.
Malignant tumors are cancerous (life threatening) and are made up of cells that grow out of control. Cells from these tumors can invade nearby tissues and metastasize (spread or invade) to other parts of the body. If cancer cells break away from the malignant tumor and enter the bloodstream or lymphatic system you will have metastatic growth resulting in a secondary metastasis. Whereas, benign tumors (not life threatening) are non-cancerous and do not spread to other parts of the body. A benign tumor grows slowly and it is localized and can not spread to other parts of the body. Some benign tumors will be removed because of size and weight and if they are pressing on nearby organs, nerves, and blood vessels and are problematic.
Lung Cancer is the number one death caused by cancer worldwide. I choose lung cancer because the main reason you get lung cancer not only affects you but the people around you. For example one of the main reason people get lung cancer is though smoking and tobacco use. The people who are around smokers are also affected by the smoke. Some have gotten lung cancer from second hand smoke. This is a very dangerous disease, but there are ways we can help prevent it.
When a tumor is developed on the brain, it is called a brain tumor or brain cancer. Brain tumors can be malignant or benign, both being dangerous when it comes to the brain. When a brain cancer is malignant, it could potentially invade and destroy important tissues and cells. These malignant tumors can also spread to other parts of the body. However, benign tumors are very slow-growing cells, which hardly ever spread to other parts of the body.
By harnessing this normal cell process, scientists hope to have found an effective way to combat cancer. Cancer is a disease that affects human somatic cells. It causes the cells to divide uncontrollably and form masses known as tumors. There are two different types of cancer tumors. Some tumors are benign, and other tumors are malignant.
A consumption of an apple a day reduces ricks of cancer and other diseases such as heart dieses, according to researchers apples are one of the healthiest fruits in the world they contain a protective plant chemical called flavonoids which is powerful and protect genes.
The war on cancer is still being fought after nearly 100 years and still nothing good has come out of this fight. Non-profit organizations are receiving massive donations but not utilizing all of it. There are thousands of people employed in the field of cancer. Cancer research technology is only going to continue to be produced as long as a cure is not found. Although there is a big effort put forth to fighting cancer, a cure will not be found in the near future because non-profit organizations are not non-profit, countless people will become unemployed, and the global economy will suffer.
What is Cancer? By Dasharath Paran, Year 10, Science 4 Cancer is a condition that affects many people worldwide, as many as 39.6% of people will be diagnosed with some sort of cancer throughout their lives. Cancer can simply be described as a disease in which the cells in our body multiply at an alarming rate.
Today, statistics show that a shocking 1,665,540 cases of cancer have already been diagnosed in the United States in 2014. Of these 1,665,540 cases, approximately 585,720 overtook the patient. Malaria, AIDS, and tuberculosis are known as some of the worst, most fatal diseases. Cancer kills twice as many people as these diseases do, combined. Data collected in 2009-2011 showed that approximately 40.4 percent of the population will be diagnosed with cancer.
