Almost every student today carries around a cell phone in their pocket. Cell phones vary in size, color, and brands. The cell phone a person chooses reflects their personality and preference. But this begs the question, what is a cell phone? A cell phone is an electronic device that connects people with other parts of the world. The first cell phone was created by Dr. Martin Cooper. Compared to todays cellular devices it was described as a brick phone. Today’s cell phones have more features than the old brick phones, such as touch screen capabilities. Today smart phones allow a person to make calls, send and receive text messages, access the internet to search information, update statuses, and much more. Don’t forget that games, music, movies, and other fun perks can be downloaded (Computer Hope). With the cell phones that students carry in their pockets, can that really affect their daily lives? There are positives and negatives to every side of an argument. According to the article “The Cell Phone Turns 40: Pros and Cons to a Cordless Life” cell phones can provide a positive environment. They allow a person to stay connected with the world via access to the internet. Smart phones enable a person to use a GPS app without having to go and buy an actual new GPS for their vehicle. A smart phone can download many apps that will keep their owner organized, such as calendars, to do lists, calculators and many more apps people take for granted (The Cell Phone Turns 40). Now there is also the cons to having a cell phone. Students have become addicted to their cell phones. It is hard to find a group of teenagers who are not constantly on their phones, snapping “selfies”, updating a status, texting someone, or playing games (The Cell Phon... ... middle of paper ... ... trace. Other main cons are the fact that students could easily be distracted by technology in school. Students could access the internet and play games or play games that are pre downloaded to their phones. This distraction prevents learning and disrespects the teacher while there are teaching (Cell Phones at School). Students could abuse the power given to them. While checking how to spell a word on their dictionary app, students could easily reply to text messages. Students can also cheat. Such ways to get away with the cheating is to take a picture of a test the student is working on and forward it to other students in the building. This type of cheating can be hard to detect because after the picture has been saved or forwarded it can be easily erased. Answers can also be accessed by the internet that is on most smartphones of teenagers.
What is a cell phone? When did the cell phone come out? Cell phones are electronic devices used for communicating. Engineer Martin Cooper was the first individual who made the first public cell phone in 1973 (Browning). Later on, the cell phone became the most important tool for our daily life in the modern world. Today society is a cell phone-controlled world, to some degree. Even though it is true that cell phones bring countless conveniences to people, the use of cell phones should be restricted. Despite their advantages as mapping and communication tools, they can cause accidents when used while driving, restrict driver’s attention which can cause safety concerns, and even lead to health problems.
Cellphone has a huge impact in our society that allows us to do virtually anything ranging from texting, blogging, browsing through the internet, purchasing an item, etc. It makes it easy to get addicted to something that we use on a daily basis and that 's one touch away.
Did you know that the average person spends 20.5 hours online per week (Doc 11). That’s almost one full day wasted away on technology. Some reasons why you should be attentive towards the use of cell phones are that 1 person spends 4 years of their life looking at their phone (talk about neck problems)(Doc 7), sleeping becomes an issue when they charge by your bed which can lead to staying up late and even sleep texting (Doc 8), and that people are even willing to text and call while driving which can risk lives, because they simply can’t be alone (Doc 3). Students and parents should limit the use of cell phones because they ruin relationships, makes your self esteem very low, and we go crazy because we can’t be alone. Cell phones ruin relationships and breaks people apart because we’re so attached to our phones we never make time to see people.
Furthermore, there are many upsides that technology brings upon students by presenting new ways of learning where technology is being used in the classroom. Within the article “Cell phones in schools pros and cons” presented by Rujuta Borkar, the advantages of having a cellular phone device in school are through emergency contact, and having a cell phone for security purposes.
Many people in today’s society rely on technology to help us with our daily lives and help us stay connected to family, friends, and other people. In the United States alone, there is an estimated population of around 297 million people, and 197 million people are subscribed to cell phone companies (Starr). Have you ever heard of the gruesome Columbine High School massacre? This incident occurred on April 20th 1999 and involved two students embarking on a shooting rampage, killing twelve students, a teacher and wounding twenty three others. Unfortunately during this incident, the school's most easily accessible phone was on the other side of the school in the library. Perhaps some of these lives could have been saved if the students in this class had cell phones that they could've used to contact the authorities more quickly. The issue we are addressing today is the use of cellular devices in educational facilities. I believe that cell phone use is of extreme convenience, and has academically beneficial aspects, among it's so called "faults".

Most students will start to zone out, or fall asleep, when a teacher starts a lesson. It is always easier to focus on something when you are interested in it.
