Steven Jensen speaks on the subject of ethics and happiness. One of the points that I resonated with was the idea of whether a just or unjust life can lead to happiness. Secondly, what actually consists of a happy life? The last point was the deciphering of the relation between human law and religion with morality and ethical beliefs. Can an unjust life lead a person to happiness? According to Thrasymachus, “the perfectly unjust person leads a happy life and dies a happy death. He accomplishes all his goals, and all his wants are satisfied. The perfectly just person, on the other hand, leads a miserable life and dies a painful death.” He believes that in order to prosper in life, people should do whatever it takes; not what is either right or wrong. But how does one achieve happiness? Many people believe that in order to achieve happiness, they need materialistic or tangible items. We use our judgment or rationality to lead us to things that we think will make us happy but nevertheless, most end up living with grief. For example, a person’s judgment may lead them to believe that if they buy a luxury 2017 car, they will be happy; however, they will just be left with months of debt to pay off. But Aquinas believes that reaching your human potential is what will lead a person to having an ethical and fulfilling life. Every creature is different in that a grasshopper’s measure of a fulfilling life will not be the same as a humans’. He states “Humans have the capacity to order and direct our lives according to understanding, capacity to enter into friendship, to seek more than selfish satisfaction from others.” We have the ability to think, love, and understand what is necessary to reach our potentials in
