Ever been on a camping trip? If the answer is yes, many other Americans have too. In 2011, nearly 43 million went camping in our country; this is a 3 million increase from the year before (The Coleman Company 6). Camping has been a popular pastime for the American people for many decades, this is mainly due to the fact that camping is fairly inexpensive and allows memories to be made that will last a lifetime. Preparing for a camping trip can be a daunting task, but if an individual has the right knowledge and has put enough time into making plans, the trip will be a good time for everyone involved. Tent camping is a very prevalent type, getting much attention for being the least expensive and most versatile. While tent camping is the way to go with a tight budget, camping in an RV can be a better option for those with extra money to spend on bringing the luxuries with them into the outdoors (Ruskin). However, it is important to note that when camping with the use of an RV, you must inquire about amenities such as electricity and water hook-up. Since the 1930’s, camping areas have had to expand their offerings to accommodate the advanced needs of campers and RV’s. Although camping with an RV or camper may sound like the ultimate get away in the woods, many loyal tent campers with a traditional mindset have begun to criticize campers who use such vehicles. A tent, sleeping bag, proper clothing, food, water, and lighting are all essential supplies that every camper, experienced or beginner will utilize. Tents are made mostly from nylon, cotton, or canvas in the modern day. Today’s technology allows for most tents to be fire and water proof, which is a must when in the wilderness. Some helpful advice would be “Before buying a tent, ask for a demonstration to make sure it is easy to erect. Also make sure the tent is well constructed, and that all the parts are included” (Ruskin). The next essential piece to the camping puzzle is a good sleeping bag. There are many important factors to consider when choosing the right sleeping bag. Usually, the heavier the product is, the warmer it will be. Also, the size is very important. Tall people will be prone to requiring a larger sleeping bag than that of averaged heighted individuals (campinginfo.org). After the purchase of the tent and sleeping bag, clothes are the next important factor. If the camping trip is planned for the summer months, fewer clothes will be needed, but rain protection will be more essential.
