introduction
blah blah blah In the fictional novel, The Call of the Wild, Jack London manifests a competition between physical and mental strengths through Buck’s adaption to his deranged adventure.
As Buck starts to understand his place in the North, he strives for a leading position but discovers an obstacle: Spitz. When Buck arrives to Dyea Beach, his companion, Curly, was attacked by Spitz. Disgust fell upon Buck when “Spitz ran out his tongue and laughed again, and from that moment Buck hated him with a bitter and deathless hatred.” (London 16). The shocking actions of Spitz showed Buck that he was powerful. Buck despised his actions, implying that Spitz makes unnecessary decisions due to his lack of intelligence. A rivalry rose upon Buck and Spitz as they try to rid another. Buck and Spitz find themselves in a fight of life and death. Buck began greatly wounded, while Spitz was in perfect condition. However, “Buck possessed a quality that made for greatness―imagination. He fought by instinct, but he could fight by head as well.” (35) Although the beginning of the fight was harsh on Buck, he managed to think out a plan for defeating Spitz. Using his physical and mental strength, he killed Spitz and earned lead of the

pack. Buck uses physical and mental strength together to create superior powerfulness. With this, he is able to lead the other dogs. As Buck becomes comfortable in his new home in the North, he learns to hunt in which he uses intelligence and his physical abilities.
Buck, who lived on an estate, grew up being provided with food from his owners, but as he adapts to his new life, he has a thirst for hunting. “His cunning was wolf cunning, and wild cunning…[which] made him as formidable a creature as any that roamed the wild.” (77) Buck was able to use his intellect to hunt; he did not rely heavily on his strength. He was able to hunt very large animals with skill. Leading up to his ability to hunt on his own, Buck was able to develop patience, determination, and confidence to aid in his
survival. Throughout Buck’s journey, he was reminded of the law of club and fang in which man with weapons should be feared. After Buck is kidnapped, he was disciplined to obey man. “[Buck] stood no chance against a man with a club” (12). No matter how Buck fought against the man in the red sweater, he was beaten down. Buck was never introduced to such weapons so he did not know how to defend himself. After becoming used to the idea of the law of club and fang, Buck encountered Yeehats who were equipped with arrows, spears, and clubs. He attacked them realizing that “he had killed man, the noblest game of all, and he had killed in the face of the law of club and fang...They were no match at all, were it not for their arrows and spears and clubs.” (83). Buck noticed that the reason he had fallen under the rule of ban was due to their mental intelligence in which they used weapons Buck was able to strengthen his mind, which helped him fight the Yeehats. When he went against the man in the red sweater, he was not able to fight him because he had not developed his mental strength much. Through time, he became more intelligent, allowing him to survive. The impact of mental and physical strength together allows one to survive and succeed. Buck demonstrates a great increase in strength, and is therefore able to survive even from a quick change of civilized life to harsh, primitive life. Buck adapts very well to his surroundings, which helps him understand the strengths of others. The learned man is strongest when they use their intelligence.
The book, “The House of the Scorpion” by Nancy Farmer is a 3 time award winner and a fantastic novel in the genre of utopia and dystopia. Matt is a clone saved from the burden of having a blunted intelligence. Evidence from the book supports this was a faulty move. The novel also says why El Patron blunts their intelligence; it's fully out of greed. Overwhelmingly, it seems that these things played a big part in the outcome of the novel, and why Matt is such a interesting, dimensional character in the book.
First, the attitude of the speaker’s father creates a contrast with other hunter’s behaviours during hunting. When the speaker goes hunting with his father, his father often adopts the technique of “[sitting] silently, motionless and endlessly patient, waiting for deer to come down the paths” (2). They sit this way for hours and are usually rewarded because “there was always an abundance of less patient hunters … noisily crashing about, keeping the deer more or less constantly on the move” (2). The sound of
For many people, hunting is just a sport, but for some it is a way of life. In Rick Bass’s “Why I Hunt” he explains how he got to where he lives now and what he thinks of the sport of hunting. There are many things in the essay that I could not agree more with, and others that I strongly disagree. Overall this essay provides a clear depiction of what goes through the mind of a hunter in the battle of wits between them and the animal.
The statement peace is better than revenge is perfect for the book the roll of thunder Hear me cry. There are so many times while you are reading this novel that things could of went completely different if they would of gotten revenge but instead did the right thing to solve problems. Page 116 of Roll Of Thunder Hear Me Cry states “when the words had been spoken i turned and fled crying into the back of the wagon, no day in my life had ever been as cruel as this one”. This quote represents mamas effort to solve problems. By making Cassie apologize even when she wasn't the main problem caused more peace than getting revenge.
A noun also known as realism—verisimilitude. The technique is used overall in writing. Authors write historical fiction books with hints toward real life events or seem as if these could happen today; therefore, these books possess a high verisimilitude. The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini, is a historical fiction book. The book is about a boy, Amir, that grows up in Afghanistan with a close friend, Hassan, who he later finds out is his half-brother. While in America during the Taliban takeover, Amir returns to Afghanistan to retrieve Hassan’s son Sohrab after Hassan is killed. These events are actual happenings in Afghanistan during the war time. The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini, contains a high verisimilitude.
It takes courage to stand up for your convictions, especially if you know there will be consequences. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is a novel by Mildred D. Taylor tells the story of a young girl named Cassie Logan. Cassie is a girl in 1933 who stands up for the rights of her family and friends. She proves her courage by standing up for her brother, Little Man, getting revenge on the bus full of white children, and standing up against Lillian Jean Simms. Cassie follows through with her convictions, knowing there may be consequences.
Another fear erected from this novel is the power of seduction over feebleminded women. Evident in a passage from Zofloya, Victoria was swooned even by the sound of his voice, ‘Oh, Flattery, like heavenly dew upon the earth, gratefully dost thou descend upon the ear of woman! Indescribable pleasure dilated the bosom of Victoria, as she listened to the honied accents of the delicate Moor’ (Dacre 156). This villain had a hold over her making it easier to push her towards evil deeds. He promised her security after committing the crimes she wished, ‘…you shall see your desire fulfilled, and I will preserve you from every danger and suspicion’ (Dacre 181). Victoria had wished Berenza dead and Lilla out of the way but required the extra push from Zofloya.
“All The President’s Men” Quote Analysis In the movie “All The President’s Men”, Managing Editor Ben Bradlee tells Woodstein, “Nothing’s riding on this except the First Amendment of the Constitution, freedom of the press and maybe the future of the country.” This quote can be analyzed in a few ways. First of all, Bradlee is being sarcastic. The First Amendment, the freedom of the press, and the future of the country are all going to be affected if Woodward and Bernstein get the story wrong.
The sweetest hunts are stolen. To steal a hunt, either go far into the wilderness where no one has been, or else find some undiscovered place under everybody's nose.” (Leopold 104)
Do you believe when people are born, they are born with a blank slate? An English philosopher named John Locke believed that people are born with a blank slate and we acquire ideas from our environment and the people that influence us. In the book “Lord of The Flies” by William Golding it shows us that everyone has evil inside of us and even children can do things that we will not expect they would do. Jack Merridew was a good example because he represented evil in the novel he turned savaged and let the evil inside of him take over his actions and these actions impacted other characters. Jack Merridew let his anger toward Ralph change him and also him wanting power and being the leader of them.
The first aspect of Willy's character that affected his failure was his pride. Willy's pride caused him to in many situations make very poor and unethical decisions, that affected both himself and his family. An example of this is through the conversation between Willy and Charley “CHARLEY: ‘You want a job?’ WILLY: ‘I got a job, I told you that. [After a slight pause] What the hell are you offering me a job for?’ CHARLEY: ‘Don’t get insulted.’ WILLY: Don’t insult me.”(DOAS: pg x) Willy does not take the offer which is an obvious example of a poor decision. He makes this decision because he sees this generous whole hearted gesture as a kind of pitiful handout that his pride restricts him from taking. By not taking this handout willy puts his self pride infront of

*Hassan was crying because of the shame he felt after the encounter with the soldier who said he had slep with his mother at some point.
Robert's encounter with the coyote is a significant step in his understanding of animals and, in turn, this leads to a greater understanding of himself. For Robert to be a soldier, it is important for him to see the point of view of a hunter. He learns from the coyote that a hunter must be generous and kill only in order to survive ("Animals and Their Significance" 1). Robert follows the coyote and watches as it passes two gophers and does not even "pause" to scuffle the burrows or even sniff at them. It just [goes] right on trotting--forward towards its goal" (26).
I was nearly finished with my cigarette when behind me I heard the sound of something moving through the grass. I quickly but quietly extinguished my cigarette in the palm of my gloved hand and turned around. My eyes scanned to see exactly where the sounds had come from, and I only hoped that the smell of my cigarette hadn't spooked whatever was walking behind me. After about ten seconds I saw the ears of a deer sticking up above the tall grass about thirty yards from me. I slowly reached to my right to remove my bow from a hook in the tree. The deer was now moving towards me through the long grass, and behind it was another deer. I knew that the rut (the peak mating season) was well under way and this second deer may be a buck. After what seemed like an eternity the second deer came into view. It was a buck, as I had thought, but it was bigger than any deer I had ever seen.
