The book I read was I Will Always Write Back by Caitlin Alifirenka and Martin Ganda with the help of Liz Welch. It's about two pen pals sending letters back and forth. As they slowly get to know each other, their bond becomes stronger. Caitlin soon finds out that Martin isn't as fortunate as Caitlin is. Caitlin and her family do everything in their power to help Martin. They sent him money, clothes, and school supplies. After Martin completes his schooling, Caitlin's mother does everything in her power to get him into college in the United States. Just when they were starting to lose hope, they got the money, and he was able to go to college in the United States. Martin received money from Caitlin again, “I was blown away and still had no idea how she could afford it” (123). That money didn't seem like a lot to Caitlin, it was just a few dollars to her. To Martin, it could keep him in school and get his family food for the week. That small act of kindness changed Martin's life, and Caitlin didn't even know it. It shows how different lives they have and how they live in different economic states. The book I will always write back shows how both Caitlin and Martin live and how different and alike they are. Martian is reading his first letter from Caitlin,“ ‘I also really like the Spice Girls. Do you know them all? Baby spice is my favorite’“ Someone sang “If you want to be my lover!” and everyone laughed, including our teacher. The Spice Girls were very popular in Zimbabwe.” (pg 17). Martian are from different countries, so they have different ways of life. Martian reads the letter Caitlin wrote him, “She didn’t blame or judge me for being poor-instead, she wrote, I hope this twenty dollars helps.” (pg 110). She knew he was struggling economically and did not judge him, but tried to help him. Even though they aren't from the same economic standpoint, they continue to be friends.
