Caffeine is one of the most widely consumed stimulants in the world (Evans and Griffiths, 1999). Caffeine in itself comes in many forms, such as coffee, tea, soda, energy drinks and other supplements that are all meant to aid in energy depletion and focus. Caffeine’s practicality and ease of consumption have lent itself to becoming a well-studied stimulant in regards to how it impacts the health of users after extended periods of use. Caffeine is considered an addictive substance with around 100 mg a day leading to dependency (Evans and Griffiths, 1999). In addition to that many substances in which caffeine is consumed have been seen in conjunction with obesity and other health problems (O’Connor, Yang, & Nicklas, 2006). With 101 of the survey participants identified as female and 41 identified as male for a total of 142 surveys done to completion. There were, 171 surveys taken in total, but 29 surveys were not completed due to either not finishing the survey or not drinking caffeine. Participants who did not drink caffeine were excluded from completing the rest of the survey. These students were sourced from exclusively Creighton group chats including sorority GROUPME’s and other club GROUPME’s. The main source of data collection was through messaging certain groups and requesting them to complete the survey.
Materials
For materials it was an online survey done through Qualtrics, which allowed easy transfer of data to Xcel and SPSS. It was distributed through GROUPME’s including Creighton College Democrats, housing, RSP, SLB, MELT leadership, and sorority pledge class group chats. In addition to group chats the survey was sent out on a variety of list serves including, CUALSA, SSS, CIC, and SLG. The beginning of the survey included questions about the population of the group. Questions regarding gender, year in school, GPA and if they drank caffeine were placed in the beginning of the survey. These preliminary questions also had our DV of GPA while the rest of the survey, until the last three questions dealt with the IV of caffeine consumption. After the preliminary questions, the survey goes into how much of varying types of caffeine the survey participant drink on an average day. These questions were centralized around comparing soda pop and coffee consumption. After comparing coffee consumption, the survey began asking questions regarding preferences of caffeine consumption. These questions were set up on a Likert scale of how likely they were to consume pop, coffee, energy drinks or tea. The survey then finished off with questions in Likert fashion regarding when the participant drinks caffeine, and in conclusion the survey asked questions regarding how the participant viewed themselves academically.
