The Organization: I have chosen CAMH as the place to run my program out of, specifically the one on Queens Street, in Toronto, Ontario. “The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is Canada’s largest mental health and addictions teaching hospital, as well as one of the world’s leading research centers in the area of addiction and mental health. CAHM combine clinical care, research education, policy development and health promotion to help transform the lives of people affected by mental health and addictions. As a public hospital, CAMH receives its operating funds from the Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network (TC LHIN.) Research grants and funds for special programs are received from the University of Toronto, Foundations …show more content…
Their philosophy of care is “that everyone is different and that each client has individual social, physical, emotional, spiritual and psychological needs.” “CAMH supports diversity and strives to be sensitive to race, culture, ethnicity, gender, age, abilities, religion and sexual orientation,” and wanting my program to reach as many people as possible as well as sharing the same values I felt like this location would be an appropriate fit for all involved. Their vision/purpose is simple, to transform lives. The duration of this program is approximately 1 year with the option of extension, or to leave early if it’s not a good fit. There will be a mandatory group session once a week and an optional group session every other day or as needed. There will be monthly workshops to attain skills, such as cooking, social skills, emotional regulation skills etc. Each participant will be given 3 meals a day as well as 2 snacks. Once they have earned a certain amount of points they will have the option for things such as a bbq, pizza night or other allowances. We will also provide the participants with deodorant, shampoo’s, conditioners, soaps, razors, tooth brushes, tooth paste and …show more content…
Another aspect that would lead to more socialization is the group meetings where staff, clientele and the dogs can all build rapport with one another. By giving out certificates and ‘specials’ cards for accomplishing tasks I believe the participants will start to come out of their shells in hopes of receiving these positive reinforcements. By having the people fill out a questionnaire or survey it will help us better fulfill their adequacy
The center combines a safe housing environment with structured educational programs that incorporate the philosophies of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. Alcoholics Anonymous is the original self help group founded on principles that provide support and encouragement for recovering alcoholics. New members are encouraged to work with a spon...
However, rather than treating an addiction like a disease, society treats addiction by stigmatizing the person like a failure, and criminal. Those who suffer with this disease, both the addict, and their friends and family, are usually isolated by judgment and embarrassment from others, who are unaware and ignorant to the issue. As a result, the disease sadly often goes unrecognized and untreated, especially among the poor, and those who are unable to get proper treatment. Once again, I am very happy after attending my second meeting, and it has an overall great experience. I wish more people were open to meetings to see how great and beneficial they are to all kinds of people, and this summer that is my goal to open others up to attending meetings that could help benefit

Several studies have examined the effects of dog ownership on people's physical and mental health. Dog ownership produces considerable health benefit and provides social support that encourages dog owners to walk (Cutt et al.2007 ). Pet owners appear to have lower systolic blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels(Anderson et al 1992). Pet owners with serious mental illness living in the community demonstrate higher social community integration(Zimalog and Krupa 2009). Socially excluded participants who performed in the presence of a dog report higher mental well-being compared with socially excluded participants who did not work in the presence of a dog (Nilüfer et al 2012). Although there is evidence suggesting that dog ownership can improve people's physical and mental health, there is little research documenting the psychological and behavioral effects of dog-assisted therapy, especially on elderly patients with dementia, who have dif...
Drug and substance abuse is a problem that since time immemorial continues to affect billions of people, families, and communities across the world. Apart from the health risks posed to individuals, drug abuse has dire socio-economic effects as it has huge financial and social burdens on the society. Many families are destroyed, economies ruined while communities are persecuted. Drug abuse also jeopardises the safety of the entire society and poses unwarranted demands on the education system, the law and the social service system and Canada is no exception to this problem. According to the Canadian Centre on Drug Abuse, the Canadian government spends up to 14 million dollar every year on rehabilitation and treatment programmes (2). The cost of the problem is estimated to amount to about 1,267 dollars per individual in Canada in terms of heath provision, law enforcement and loss of productivity, without including personal costs. This paper will address the harm reduction approach to addressing the problem of drug addiction in Canada.

“Narcotics Anonymous is a nonprofit fellowship or society of men and women for whom drugs have become a major problem.” Addiction is one of the leading cause of death all over the world but for some reason no one has a solution to help these suffering addicts, they’re seen as a lost cause. Most people suffering in active addiction are sent to jails or institutions to be locked up until the drugs wear off then are released into society again. What people don't realize is that once an addict is released from these facilities, they’ll go right back to using because they don’t know how to live and deal with life on life's terms, this is where Narcotics Anonymous or other various other 12 step programs come in. They help the suffering addict by
In patient programs can also be very effective, especially for those with more severe problems. They are highly structured programs in which patients remain at a residence, typically for 6 to 12 months. Treatment Centers differ from other treatment approaches principally in their use of the community—treatment staff and those in recovery—as a key agent of change to influence patient attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors associated with drug use. Patients in TCs may include those with relatively long histories of drug addiction, involvement in serious criminal activities, and seriously impaired social functioning. The focus of the TC is on the resocialization of the patient to a drug-free, free living lifestyle and delivers healthy coping mechanisms for individuals that have not been able to function in society without the use of a mood altering substance.
Gary Mendell, founder and CEO of Shatterproof, supports the installation of supervised injection sites into the cities of America. He mentions “These are our sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers” (Katel). Many people believe that addiction is a disease and it can happen to anyone. It is not a negative attribute in a person’s character, but rather a serious and life threatening way to live. Though some who support injection sites believe they can be used in place of a treatment center, some do not. Nevertheless, it can keep the devoted addicts alive long enough to seek treatment from a specialist. According to the CQ Researcher, “More than 30,000 people are dying every year from opioid addiction” (Katel). In order to stop this onslaught of untimely deaths, many have expressed their thoughts on the advancements of the centers around

The community organization that I choose to focus on is a recovery center for substance abuse that goes by the name of Darrel Strawberry recovery center. Recovery center is located in my hometown Deland, Florida that’s 30 minutes away from Daytona Beach. Just little background about the facilities it’s a 28 day reseindetal program that design to treat addictions, when you mention it addiction it cover all drug addictions that a person is facing with. Inside the program they provided medical detoxication and treatment to the patient, however this program helped a lot of people but some people have go back because of the relapse they are face with
Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT), which can be provided in a group or individual settings, is designed to promote improvement in a human’s physical, social, emotional, or cognitive function. An article by Chitic, Rusu, and Szamoskozi (2012) provides an analysis in order to determine the value of AAT. Both dogs and horses that were trained for AAT were examined and studied to determine their effectiveness in treating patients with psychological disorders. The results showed that both therapy dogs and horses were valuable aids to the therapeutic process. The analysis suggests that proper training and repeated sessions were necessary for proper treatment of patients. In addition, certain disorders may benefit more than others in regards to AAT. For example, a child with ADHD may not benefit from a therapy dog’s presence, for it may worsen the hyperactive symptoms. On the other hand, a patient with depression may benefit greatly from the same animal (Chitic, Rusu, Szamoskozi, 2012). These findings are a perfect starting point to answering the research question: Do patients who engage in AAT display a betterment in their overall emotional well-being, as well as show improvement in their interpersonal interactions...
