In the short film Sherlock Jr., director Buster Keaton did an exceptional job with displaying continuity and discontinuity between shots. The use of continuity editing in this film really paves the way for the audience to have a very easy and flowing experience while watching. This film would be very hard to follow if it had no continuity. The director also uses many editing tricks to give the film a greater sense of continuity to the plot of the story. Throughout the movie, no matter how many times the scenes changed, we always knew what was going on because of how smooth the story line was and because of the continuity. One of the ways discontinuity was shown in the film was in one of the scenes, we see Sherlock in the middle of the screen
and then we see the background change from scene to scene, resulting in him having to acclimate to the extreme environment changes. One example of a scene that shows great continuity is the car chase seen. In this scene, he is seen running and exiting off of the screen. The next shot immediately following that one shows him running from the same direction, giving the scene continuity. This scene would have had continuity problems if Buster Keaton hadn’t followed the 180-degree rule because it would have been very confusing. Lastly, when Sherlock knocks at the house’s front door, he goes down the front steps and suddenly falls off of a stone in front of garden walls. Then walks down a sidewalk, which results in him walking off a cliff. Next, he finds himself stuck in a sand dune and is surrounded by lions. Then, he sees a train and shortly after that is drenched by a wave. After this he dives into the water, but lands headfirst in a snow bank. When he gets up, he leans on a tree and then suddenly he falls back into the garden because the tree disappears. Throughout these shots, Keaton’s body was the continuity because it was continuous when everything else wasn’t. During this film, the scenes changed drastically, but we always knew what was going on and it was easy to follow.
During the beginning of the film “Sherlock Jr”, there are multiple cut shots when he is trying to buy a portrait from the store lady.This scene shows continuity due to the fact that this is an eyeline match shot between Sherlock and the portrait. This scene establishes the setting Sherlock and the other characters occupy. The portrait also indicates that there is a graphic match towards the store lady and the portrait in the next upcoming shots. This also contributes to continuity because they both share the same pose, facial expression indicating the resemblance and establish that there is not a change between time and space.This scene also presents rhythmic relation that connects the shots together. This is to link the shots together in a format that relates to Sherlock’s hopes and coordinates with the music tempo. There are many common themes mocked in the movie “Monty Python the Quest for the Holy Grail”. Religion, Knightly Behavior, Noble Quests etc. I believe the movie showed how the old stories and plays kind of exaggerated these themes, and they aren’t as mighty as they are made out to be. I think Knights and Kings weren’t really as bold and courageous as stories told and this movie kind of showed it. There are exceptions though, as in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, he took the challenge and stuck his neck out so no one else would have too and he did it bravely (he had a little bit of a scared moment) but he also admitted he was wrong for messing with the Green Knight’s wife. But in Monty Python, it showed how Knights also did things cowardly, as when Lancelot went to save the “damsel” in distress and killed almost everyone in the castle.
In the movie Holmes, in the beginning, was much more prideful and rude to Watson and people in general, but later on, Holmes was a lot nicer and somewhat humble at least compared to the book. This difference made the viewer feel less liking of the character of Holmes and it almost seemed that the director tried to save Holmes’s character by making him nicer at the ending. The difference had a big impact on the feeling of the movie because it felt that he was so stuck up he was rather unapproachable. ...
