Fast food restaurants in the country are popular among Children also. It is determined that children from age of 2 years to 11 years watch hundreds of fast food advertisements on an annual level. In case of advertisements, children from 2 years to 6 years watched more than 200 advertisements in 2012 and for children of 6 years to 11 years, total advertisements watched were around 250.
Service Segmentation Second important point regarding fast food industry in the United States of America is regarding segmentation of service. Drive thru and take off restaurants in the United States of America take share of 34.4% and 18.1% respectively. This service sector has also been involved in generation of various jobs in the country. It is expected that fast food industry will generated around 124000 jobs in the industry. Fast food industry has to spend $5 million every day on providing food products to children. Children watch at least 10 fast food related advertisements each day and 4000 advertisements each year. The problem with advertisements is that around 98% of advertisements viewed by children are related to food products which are high on calorie, sugar or sodium.
This market is a very delicate market and government is very strict in ensuring that organizations in industry do not get involved in providing unhealthy food products to customers. One out of every five public schools in the country sells fast food from a brand name, but do not know where it comes from. Fast food has gained a great popularity among different age groups in different parts of the globe, becoming a favorite delicacy of both adults and children.
Fast food corporations go to the extent to pursue children by making advertisements specifically targeting children, and even swaying children by giving some sort of toy that attracts the younger customer. Some corporations even produce a whole line of toys that the children can collect if they continue to come back and purchase their products. In “The Hunger Gene” written by Ellen Ruppel Shell, she goes into this controversy stating “ I sit down with the two executives whose companies make and sell these toys. They tell me that their toys are not cheap, that in fact the cost of these ‘premiums’ can sometimes blot out profits from the sale of the kids meal. But the fast food industry's goal in luring in kids is to lock in lifelong customers, not necessarily to turn a quick head.” (Shell 195). A child does not have much knowledge on fast food.
