Bullying is a big issue and it puts many students of all ages no matter if you are in high school, middle school or elementary school in danger. The issue of bullying really energizes me and makes me want to speak out against it because I was bullied in middle school and my friends used to get bullied too and I did not like it at all. The issue of bullying is constantly growing and I believe it should be solved before it gets even worse. There are many organizations that help people that are being bullied but there is only so much one group can do, we need to enforce this so that kids do not get hurt when all they are doing is going to school to learn, a very popular bullying organization is “Stomp Out Bullying”.
Statistics say that almost 77% of bullying in schools are verbal bullying. Students who are bullied are more likely to suffer from serious problems in the future, bullying can affect a student’s performance in school, and it can make the student become more depressed. 80% of the time an argument with a bully will break out in a physical fight. The gender that is most affected by bullying is female students, this type of gender based bullying could also be referred to sexual harassment. The issue of bullying is serious and it puts children's lives in danger when all the kids are doing is going to school and trying to get a better education for themselves. If a student gets bullied it can have a big impact on their life and that impact could be bad, they might turn to violence, drugs, or even commit suicide. The child that is getting bullied might also suffer from low self-esteem, anxiety, depression or suicidal
thoughts. There are some situations where there are three types of people involved, there is the bully, the one being bullied, and the bystander. In most situations the bystander is the one who sees the bullying happen and does not say anything, or instigates the bullying. The reason these bystanders do not tell anyone about the bullying is because they do not want to be targeted by the bully or they do not want to be called a snitch by anyone else. Some organizations for bullying include, PACER Center, Stomp Out Bullying, and End to Cyber Bullying these are only 3 organizations that help kids who get bullied. I have had an opportunity to speak out against bullying in school on a presentation but I would like to make a change and stop bullying for the sake of children’s lives.
Bullying incidents need to be monitored and stopped when they are happening. Schools need to do more to prevent bullying issues and stop them for good. Most children are too afraid to say anything to

As a society, we often underestimate the damages that bullying cause on children, not just America but all over, and the ones who suffer are the victims themselves. Victims are damaged with the stigma that they are weak, yet somehow have to fend for themselves against something that they have little to no control over. Whether it is for funding, a reputation or any other reason schools sweep their bullying problem under the rug or turn a blind eye, however they have more potential to end this growing issue. Everyone has been bullied or encountered someone being bullied at some point of their life. Whether it would be physically or verbally both can be exceedingly traumatizing and can have a long-term psychological influence on children’s development. Majority people may define bullying in a more physical term; nevertheless that’s not always the case. The act of bullying can occur in several ways and in reality affect the individual in the same way. Bullying is generally defined as repeated, negative, and harmful actions focused at target throughout a course of time, exhibiting a sense of power difference between the bully and the victim (Olweus, 1993; Limber & Mihalic, 1999 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005). A survey was conducted in the United States estimating that over six million children, about 30% in grade six through ten have experienced frequent bullying in a school environment (Nansel, 2001 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005). Many people might debate that bullying is something that every child goes through and is simply a part of growing up, although there are several damaging consequences that happens to the child’s brain. Bullying causes the child to feel upset, isolated, frightened, anxious, and depressed. They feel like they reason they are being picked on is because there is something wrong with them and may even lose their confidence feel unsafe going to school (Frenette, 2013 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005) Anthropologically, sociologically, or psychologically, bullying can be analyzed through different perspectives and several questions can be asked based on the topic:
Bullying is a growing concern in a society where status and exercising power over another human being are increasingly important in developing one’s social circles. Dan Olweus (Norwegian researcher and founder of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program) defines it as an “aggressive behaviour that is intentional and that involves an imbalance of power. School victimization is an especially delicate matter that has only really been in the public eye for the past half century, as more and more researchers and psychologists pointed out its short- and long-term negative effects on targeted individuals. No matter where you go, bullying is just around the corner. There’s no certain age for anyone to become a bully. Movies make it high school the biggest place for bullies to be created; but in the real world, that’s not the case. Bullying is a serious issue and can happen anywhere at any time to anyone.
If schools have bully awareness programs teenage suicide rates can be decreased. Russell Skiba has stated in an article, “programs have been found to be effective in reducing bullying incidents by as much as 50 percent”(Skiba). If schools will provide students with a bullying awareness program then there could be a result of fewer students trying to commit suicide. Being picked on can make a person feel less confident, scared, and hate themselves. These bullies can even be known as your “friends” from school. Some children will then start to feel differently because they cannot fit in with the people surrounding them which will then lead them to feel as if they are not good enough. Bullies can lead children to go through many situations such as depression, anxiety, and social disorders. These harsh words from these bullies around the school can eventually lead a student to kill themselves. Ever wonder what causes bullying? Where it comes from and the damage it does to children? Well in this day and age bullying is a big problem to kids from elementary to high school. Many people might not know that even though bullying happens to some kids early on, they carry it on throughout their entire lives. This is why it is important to stop any act of bullying before it goes too far.
While sexual harassment is generally considered to be aimed from a male to a female, both males and females are victims and perpetrators of this destructive act. For people who are not knowledgeable on the subject of school violence, they may be confused on where the line has been crossed and dangerous behavior begins, nevertheless, there is clear data on who is a bully, what behavior is characterized by a bully, who are victims of bullies, what sexual harassment is, and who is affected by sexual harassment. Many factors in a child’s life may lead him or her to have such emotional distress that they begin bullying other students at school. Social factors are usually the easiest aspect to identify that would cause a child to bully their classmates. The child may have been bullied themselves, which leads to pent up aggression, which leads to the release of this aggression on other students.
Bullying is a devastating issue that threatens the well-being of today’s youth. Those who are most likely at risk are those who; have a learning or physical disability i.g., autism or ADHD, are underweight or overweight, are gay/lesbian/transgendered, or speak a different language. Of course, there are no specific guidelines of who will become victims of bullying. Children who are bullied experience lower self-esteem, greater loneliness, greater anxiety, and more depression in addition to the already stressful adolescent years. The longer the bullying occurs the more profound the symptoms can become. As a low-level, subtle form of violence, bullying creates an unsafe school environment and can lead to more serious types of violence among students (Whitted & Dupper, 2005).
Bullying is a repeated harmful act that continues to affect millions of students every year. There is no stereotypical person that is a target for bullying; anyone can be its victim. There may not always be any signs of physical harm during these attacks, but our children always suffer emotional harm. Educating students, teachers and parents seems to be the only valid solution to this problem. There are many organizations that can educate the schools on this subject but for it to work people must care. Maybe one day, when enough people realize that this problem will not go away with out their help, we can eliminate bullying from our schools. In a perfect world there would be no bullying, but if you could ask Rachel Scott she would tell you we do not live in a perfect world, only a hopeful one.
Bullying is a very immoral behavior which leads to emotional and self-esteem issues to the target and in extreme or persistent cases it has been found to lead to suicide. The bullies should be well punished and counseled to stop the behavior.
Bullying of students in school is an abuse that affects and produces a number of negative experiences on the victim. It is proven that those students who bully do so merely because they see themselves superior than those being bullied. They use this as a tactic to make juniors fear them and show them that they are not equal in any way. Some will even bully as a revenge of the bullying they suffered in the past. I have been bullied before and I know some of the effects it could have on a person. Bullying is a serious cause of many issues and has effects that may be long lasting.
