Licking the toad? A phrase most have heard before but did you know that licking the toad referenced the hallucinogenic effect certain toads had once a person literately licked it. The cause of the hallucinogenic symptoms is bufotenine. This paper will define what bufotenine is, the history behind bufotenine, signs and symptoms of bufotenine use, and bufotenine addiction treatment. According to National Center for Biotechnology Information, bufotenine (bufotenin) , is a tryptamine related to the neurotransmitter serotonin. This hallucinogenic serotonin analog is found in frog or toad skins, mushrooms, higher plants, and mammals specifically in the brains, plasma, and urine in schizophrenics. It is used as a tool in central nervous studies …show more content…
According to Miller (2002), the Vikings were believed to have access to Amanita mushrooms, which contain bufotenine, and may be linked to their famed Berserker rage (p. 60). In the 1960's, young people in Austrila had taken to toad licking due to a newspaper report jokingly stating that toad slime was hallucinogenic. This resulted in making cane toad an illegal substance under the Drug Misuse Act. Since the government banned it, this encouraged more people to try it and the practice spread to the United States. After a few people became violently ill, the United States banned bufotenine in 1967 (Gahlinger, P. M., 2004). According to Schultes (1969), Native Americans made a strong hallucinogenic snuff, known as cohoba, made from the beans Anadenanthera peregrina. This was used by shamans to transcend this realm and into the other. Albert Most, who was a proponent of recreational use of Bufo alvarius venom, wrote The Psychedelic Toad of the Sonoran Desert , which detailed how to extract and smoke the secretions (Gossop, 2013, p. 16). Aphrodisiacs (Rockhard and Love Stone) and herbal supplements (Chan Su) caused men and women to die from a heart attack. These products contained dried, toxic secretions of cane toads. This resulted in the FDA to ban the sell of Chan Su, Rockhard, and Love Stone (Cartwright …show more content…
The abuse rate is a determinate factor in how the drug is scheduled. A Schedule 1 drugs, substances, or chemicals are defined as drugs with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse and the potential to create severe psychological and/or physical dependence. Some examples of Schedule I drugs are heroin, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), marijuana (cannabis), ecstasy, methaqualone, and peyote (Drug Enforcement Administration). According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Controlled Substances, Bufotenine, DEA number 7433, has been classified as a Schedule 1 drug (2016) . According to Miller (2002), toad venom can be harvested, dried, and smoking. Death can occur if a person swallows enough to cause hallucinations. Smoking toad venom can cause you to pass out upon inhale, increase in heart rate, intense emotional experiences, altered consciousness and hallucinations ( visual, auditory, olfactory, and gustatory) (p. 61). According to Addiction Library, bufotenin users may seem as if they are in an alternate universe. Many Bufotenin users experience a strong spiritual

Psilocybin’s chemical structure is C12 H17 N2 O4 P. It has a ring configuration by the name of indole attached to an ethyl amine substituent. Indole’s are aromatic compounds that have a benzene ring attached to a pyrrole ring containing nitrogen. Psilocybin’s chemical structure is derived from an amino acid and tryptamine called trypthophan. It also has a visible structural resemblance with serotonin, a neurotransmitter responsible for “happiness”. Psilocybin is very soluble in water, insoluble in organic compounds and slightly soluble in methanol and ethanol. This due to the ...
Two broad categories of psychoactive drugs are licit and illicit drugs. Licit drugs are legal to be in a person's possession, sold by a manufacturer or salesperson, and distributed by appropriate personnel such as tobacco or alcohol (Bethel, 2016). Illicit drugs are illegal to be in possession by a person, illegal to distribute and sell and are illegal to manufacture drugs of this nature such as cocaine (Levinthal, 2016).

Credibility material: Its intake results in adverse medical conditions that are further exalted by its addiction properties that ensure a continued intake of the substance. The drug can be abused through multiple means and is medically recorded to produce short-term joy, energy , and other effects such as increased heart rate and blood pressure. This ultimately results in numerous psychiatric and social problems; factors that played a major role in its illegalization after multiple and widespread cases of its effects were reported in the country during the 1900s. In addition to this, the drug results in immediate euphoric effect, a property which the National Institute of Drug Abuse (2010) attributes to be the root cause for its increased po...

Remedies that were once used to treat diseases and utilities that could be used to build a house were starting to be turned into deadly, easily accessed, weapons. Prior to the 1920’s, murderers who killed using poison could get away with the death being ruled “by natural causes”, but after, skilled toxicologists re-innovated the procedures medical examiners perform when ruling a cause of death. After technology has advanced, killers who picked their poison (literally) were not able to get away with it as easily. An average person may think it’s more difficult to track down a lethal poisoner, let alone rule the cause of death a poisoning; however, it’s just like any other homicide.

Causing changes in mind and body such as seizures, delusions, vomiting and nausea, and even death and having bizarre effects on drug users recreational drugs called bath salts has become infamous. The drug is not only highly addictive it is also potent. Meth is one of the most addictive drugs on the market but research shows that bath salts could actually be more addictive.

“Meth, not even once” is a popular phrase that is associated with this drug. This drug has many known horrible effects associated with it, plus many effects more I am sure are going to be discovered over time. I am intending to cover the history, effects, the different categories of meth abuse, and the withdrawal effects of Methamphetamine in this paper, and what to do if you suspect someone you know is using meth.
Psychedelics have always been a controversial subject in the world of drugs because they have the ability to alter one’s perception of reality. L.S.D, MDMA, and psilocybin are three of the main types of psychedelics on the drug market, all three of which are listed as schedule 1 by the DEA. A schedule 1 drug is considered to have a high addiction risk, has no medical value whatsoever, and is illegal to have in your possession. A schedule 2 drug is considered to have the potential for both medical purposes, and abuse. A schedule 3 drug is considered safe for medical use and can only be prescribed by a doctor. I however, believe that psychedelics should be reconsidered for at least schedule 2 as studies have shown an increase in the use of psychedelics in psychotherapy and can even help the terminally ill come to terms with their own deaths.
There are five different classifications (schedules) of drugs in the Controlled Substance Act of 1970. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) choose what substance falls into what classification. The placement of a drug on the Controlled Substances List is based on three categories: (1) potential abuse, (2) whether or not the drug is currently accepted for medical use, and (3) if abuse of the drug causes high or low dependency level. Marijuana is the most popular illicit drug. It is a Schedule I drug, the worst classification of drugs. Some drugs are not on the Controlled Substances List and are known not as drugs at all. The three most commonly used and sociably accepted drugs used are alcohol, tobacco products, and caffeine. Caffeine is believed to contribute to Parkinson’s Disease according to Dr. Jasvinder Chawla. Tobacco products have many contributing factors in causing cancer and other health problems. On average, alcohol kills 6.5 times more youth than all the other illicit drugs combined.
Pre-Columbian Mexicans used many substances, from tobacco to mind-expanding (hallucinogenic) plants, in their medicinal collections. The most fascinating of these substances are sacred mushrooms, used in religious ceremonies to induce altered states of mind, not just drunkenness.
