“Whenever we find one who has come unscathed through every test in childhood, youth, and manhood, we shall set him as a Ruler to watch over the commonwealth; he will be honoured in life, and after death receive the highest tribute of funeral rites and other memorials.” Great philosophers like Plato and Machiavelli raised a lot of arguments in how a true guardian is like. Although there have been some oppositions on how guardians should execute duties, it is noticeable that both philosophers agree that a true guardian is more than just a leader. A true guardian assumes active responsibility to the society of which he or she is part. As discussed in Plato’s The Republic and Machiavelli’s The Prince, guardians are leaders that don’t own any possessions and they are active in ruling the society. True guardians are enlightened from shadows of lies. These rulers desire to offer his people a better world to live in. True Guardians must be very skillful in fighting. Siddhartha Gautama is a great example of a true guardian. 'Siddhattha Gautama' means descendant of Gotama who is efficacious in achieving aims. He later became known as Buddha, which means "one who is intuitive, awakened, or enlightened." But how does one achieve enlightenment and what do you do after gaining it? Siddhartha Gautama was born in Lumbini, near the Nepalese-Indian border. Asita, a famous wise sage, predicted that he would become a great king or a great religious teacher. Siddhartha’s father, King Suddhodana, wished for his son to be a king so he shielded him from religious teachings or any knowledge of human sufferings. King Suddhodana evidently thought that any contact with unpleasantness might prompt Siddartha to seek a life of renunciation as a religious... ... middle of paper ... ...mber 8, 2010, http://www.san.beck.org/EC9-Buddha.html. In his early life, he was born a Kshatriya. Until the age of twenty nine, Siddhartha lived a luxurious life as a prince. Siddhartha’s father, King Shuddodana consulted Asita, a well-known soothsayer, concerning the future of his son. Asita proclaimed that he would be one of two things: He could become a great king, even an emperor. Or he could become a great sage and savior of humanity. This made King Shuddodana wary of what his son may become, therefore he did anything in his power to surround his son Siddhartha with beauty and health to show Siddhartha that there is nothing to save humanity from since it is perfect. If Siddhartha was my son, I would let him see all the suffering in the world and allow him to take action instead of hiding it. It is selfish for the King to hide humanity’s flaws. One day, Siddhartha had seen two wandering, sick and old men. He also, for the first time, experienced death. Due to the sights he had seen, he escaped the palace and lived in a forest where he followed a spiritual life of meditation. After only six years, he achieved enlightenment under the famous Bodhi tree. Siddhartha claims that everyone is able to achieve enlightenment and we all possess
Analysis of Buddhism Plain and Simple by Steve Hagen The book Buddhism Plain and Simple, by Steve Hagen, caught my attention and became more interesting to me than I thought. I have always heard of the religion Buddhism, but I never knew what it was all about. I never thought that Buddhism was as huge as it is. I knew that it existed in other countries, but I never knew what exact countries. Many of the views in this book surprised me and the book taught me a lot about morals and better ways to live your life.
While the idea of attaining enlightenment can be taught, the method or path of attaining that enlightenment cannot be taught or passed along. For most of his life, Siddhartha tries to achieve enlightenment through the rejection of his desires, thus becoming a Samana. Soon enough, however, Siddhartha realizes that the path of the Samana is not the right one for him, and soon after he starts to study the doctrine of the Buddha. Yet Siddhartha soon starts to see flaws within the Buddha’s doctrine:
In the beginning, Siddhartha is having trouble finding peace and discovering the path to enlightenment. Siddhartha’s interactions with his family, the samanas, and the Buddha help Siddhartha to realize that enlightenment cannot be achieved with the guidance of a teacher. In the very beginning, Siddhartha’s father is the one who teaches Siddhartha about his culture and spirituality. Siddhartha is very young when he masters all his father’s teachings and realizes that, “his father was to be admired, quiet and noble were his manners, pure his life, wise his words, delicate and noble thoughts lived behind its brow—but even he, who knew so much, did he live in bliss?” (Hesse 6). Siddhartha knows that ...
Siddhartha grew up near a river as a Brahmin, though he gives his offerings spiritually, he becomes unsatisfied with the life that he is living. His life is too simple for him. “He brought joy to all,...But Siddhartha did not bring joy to himself.”
Siddhartha throughout his journey encounters many teachers, but before he set on exploring the world for knowledge, he was the son of Brahmin in an Indian town. Siddhartha was always admired by the people of his town; he always excelled at everything, and was a fine writer and great reader.
Siddhartha and Govinda journeyed to the town where the illustrious one lived. The two men listened to his words of wisdom and Govinda considered this way of life. Govinda believed Buddha was his teacher that would lead him to nirvana. Siddharth...
Siddhartha literally starts at the top of the mountain. He was a Brahmin, the top of the Hindu Caste
Siddhartha's path lead him through constant re-evaluations, keeping him focused on himself. He began as the son of a wealthy Brahmin, sheltered from the real world and any experience with it, but having the best education he could obtain. He began his life at home, as a thinker, possessing wisdom and thoughts he had yet to earn through experience.
Activists expect grand change or the president is a failure. An activist must have a bold agenda, with clear vision statements. Guardianship is a concept where the president is caretaker of the office vice an agent of change. The guardian seeks to maintain stability and deal with situations as they arise through studied consideration and pragmatic solutions to problems (p. 8). Mervin says that academics and political scientists are mainly liberals who expect great presidents to run activist presidencies to create change; the change being in the form of domestic social reform. Activists expect grand change or the president is labeled a
Siddhartha’s father, a noble Brahmin, gave his son the gift of not only his teachings but also his love. As Siddhartha grew older, he rejected his father’s love. He wanted to explore beyond the Brahmin tradition and uncover Nirvana. His father restricted Siddhartha’s ability to realize spiritual wisdom, which gave him the reason to abandon it. However, his father was hesitant ...

Spirited Away is an animated film by director Hayao Miyazaki that is to date the largest grossing film in Japan’s history. Critically acclaimed and lauded worldwide, the movie’s story line is heavily dependent on Japan’s indigenous religion for its plot and central themes. The animation is filled with cultural markers and abstract characteristics of the religion that are relatable and charming to any audience regardless of religious background. Throughout the film; however, there are two recurring religious themes that make up the foundation that the storyline depends on. The shintoist beliefs on purification of one’s impurities and the true nature of beings can be seen in the film in the form of symbolism through landmarks and character
When observed through Buddhist lens, the Star Wars saga can be said to be intrinsically Buddhist; the many underlying themes that characterize the saga continuously point towards the dharma that is crucial to Buddhist philosophy. In Star Wars, many of the characters behave in ways which can be said to align with the noble eightfold path, which allows characters such as the Jedi knights to obtain the levels of morality, concentration, wisdom, and mindfulness that are associated with reaching nirvana. The concept of the force that weaves the saga together, can also be said to be a reflection of Buddhist thought, as it mirrors the notion that all beings are interconnected. Not only do the Jedi knights have qualities that pertain to Buddhist monastics,
From the moment we are born we have the tendency of craving the worldly desires that we are exposed to. Its part of human nature to want an ideal life where you are either wealthy, powerful, happy or all of the above without any suffering involved. Although that ideal sounds phenomenal, it is the thought of limitation that drives many people to seek for something more than just worldly pleasures. As some stay within the lines of an insatiable life, others come to the realization that living a life with nothing but worldly pleasures and goals are ultimately not everlasting. This is the point where people go on to pursue something bigger than themselves, something that gives them a purpose and infinite joy or as most would call it, a religion. One of the most fascinating major world religions that many have chosen to follow for centuries is Buddhism. A very complex, yet intriguing religion that seeks for a way of life that ultimately releases a person from suffering and leads them to inner peace and joy.
