Buckthorn an Invasive Plant Species As we all know invasive plants species are living things that harm the environment somehow. “Invasive plant species are always posing a threat by disturbing the natural order of Ecosystems. Rhamnus Cathartica, otherwise known as Cathartic Buckthorn is native to Europe and was first brought to Minnesota in the mid-1800's as a hedging material. There are two main species: Common Buckthorn and Glossy Buckthorn. Buckthorn is commonly a problem to wildlife habitat, threatens the forests and the natural habitats” (Minnesota DNR). According to Peter Kareiva blog post, “The people who are against cutting down trees and using herbicide have entirely abdicated their role as architects of ecosystems. They would rather see irreplaceable ancient life forms go extinct than see good management and stewardship occurring. The actions of humans have allowed certain ecosystems to form. Preventing the human actions that allow these ecosystems to persist will spell their doom. This is something that does not seem to bother the anti-management people. I just feel it is a shame that after the invasion of non-native invasive trees such as Buckthorn, many wonderful native species are not able to grow to adulthood. Furthermore, although not all Minnesotans think alike, some of them will probably dispute my claim that we should try to do something about it by creating an organization to have a yearly checkup on the spread. I agree on the fact that not all non-native plant is bad, but I do agree on prevent it from killing our native tree. People might say, “invasive plants are here to stay, and you can’t really control their spread and incredible numbers. Just let nature take its course.” I believe that it is our in control to prevent Buckthorn from spreading with all the volunteers in the community to clean up the
