Originally, most Plains Indians were farmers and “had only dogs to carry their bundles” (485). The Rite of Passage theme is used in this story through the character, Long Arrow, who wants to prove himself to the tribe by getting Elk Dogs, or horses, for the tribe.
The novel, The Call of the Wild, follows a four-year-old mixed Saint Bernard and Scottish shepherd, named Buck. In the beginning of the story, Buck lives in the home of Judge Miller, located at Santa Clara Valley, California. In Santa Clara, Buck lives a luxurious life. At the time of the story, gold is discovered in the North. With this discovery, the value of large dogs like Buck escalated dramatically. The dog’s value was due most to their ability to haul heavy sleds through the abundant snow. Unfortunately, Judge Miller’s servant, Manuel steals Buck to sell him to a band of dog-nappers to pay for his accumulating gambling debts. The ring of thieves that bought Buck is gaining a secure banking by trading the dog to northern executives. Buck, who has had an easy life so far, does not adapt well to the terrain as the other canines do. Buck does not easily tolerate the confinement and mistreatment of his new authority. Buck’s gains the misconception, which then is an aide that any man with a club is a dominator and must be obeyed.
It is often said that a dog is a man’s best friend. In Cormac McCarthy’s novel, The Crossing, a deep affection and fondness are established between man and animal. In a particular excerpt from the novel, Cormac illustrates the protagonist’s sorrow that was prompted from the wolf’s tragic death. As blood stiffens his trousers, the main character seeks to overcome the cold weather and fatigue with hopes of finding the perfect burial site for the wolf. McCarthy uses detailed descriptions and terminology in his novel, The Crossing, to convey the impact of the wolf’s death on the protagonist, a sad experience incorporated with religious allusions and made unique by the main character’s point of view.
At home, which was a large house called Judge Miller’s Place, in the sun kissed Santa Clara Valley in California, Buck ruled over all of the dogs that were there. Buck was Judge Miller’s inseparable companion, until a man named Manuel, who was one the gardener’s helpers, committed a treacherous act. In order to cover his Chinese lottery gambling debts, he stole Buck from his sound sleep and brought him to a flag station called College Park. There, the exchanging of money took place. Buck was loaded onto an express car to Seattle. On his way to Seattle, he found that a man in a red sweater repeatedly beat him. From then on, I knew that Buck would never forget that experience. In that part of the book, I found out that Buck was now an enraged animal and could only be tamed by repeatedly being hit with a club or a whip.
The novel starts on Judge Miller’s property in Santa Clara Valley. Buck is the king of his domain and everyone knows it - from the lowly house dogs to the Judge’s sons. However, a gardener with a gambling problem soon ends Buck’s relaxed life. He sells Buck in order to obtain more money; Buck is sent west to be a sled dog and is cruelly mistreated along the way.
A sense of belonging and community is essential in finding value and purpose in life. Dogs are naturally social animals that seek to live in packs. In the novel “Fifteen Dogs”, written by André Alexis, the dogs are given human intelligence and are forced to face a difficult question; to embrace this new way of life or revert back to their old nature. The intelligence the dogs gain unites the pack of dogs together, but, it is also what separates them from all other dogs. The introduction of language to the pack creates disorder within the hierarchy of the group which leads to divisions between the dogs.
Have you ever thought of your sweet, loving dog becoming a savage, primordial beast? Or maybe your dog is moving from your cozy, warm home to sleeping in the harsh cold outside in the Yukon? In the adventure book, The Call of the Wild, written by Jack London, Buck is a dog from the sunny state of California, but after being abducted, is taken to the Yukon. Then, after being taught the harsh laws of club and fang, Buck begins to regress and adapt to the cold and brutal North land. Buck passes through many different masters, and has pulled many sleds, but he finds himself in love with John Thornton, and at the same time he is tempted by becoming a savage beast and finally answers the call of the wild.
As he starts to understand the law of club and fang, Buck lands in Dyea Beach, his first night at camp Curly (A fellow dog purchased with Buck by Perrault) dies. When the dogs forsaken Curly’s body after the fight, “But she lay there limp and lifeless in the bloody, trampled snow, almost literally torn to pieces, this word half-breed standing over her and cursing horribly. The scene often came to book to trouble him in his sleep. So that was the way. No fair play. Once down that was the end of you” (London 32). When Curly dies in a dogfight against a more experienced husky, he was torn to shreds by other surrounding dogs. This is called the wolf-manner of fighting. The wolf-manner of fighting is not only to strike and leap away, but to win by strength, decisiveness, and to gain from other weaknesses. Curly was the first dog that Buck would see killed, he is so traumatized by this event that he promises himself that he would never lose. By that changing himself to represent less a follower and more of leader, and as much as he tries not to develop attachment to humans or other dogs. As Buck changes and adapts to his new environment he keeps this promise and figures out a ways to harness his power. Later on, the Yeehat tribe invaded John Thornton’s camp and killed him, Buck leaps into action and kills a couple members
